3 Module : Setting Our House in Order About This Module Overview In this module, members are provided with multiple opportunities to explore their community, establish norms, policies and procedures, while getting to know each other. Members will use their imaginations and intersts to build relationships and individually showcase who they are. Driving Questions Why do people make agreements with each other? How do you feel when you learn that the person you trusted to keep an agreement does not keep it? Collaboration The act of working with another on a joint project. Respect To show regard or consideration for; to hold in esteem or honor. Mutual respect Having or involving deep regard toward each other. Boundaries Something that indicates limits or bounds. 8 Module : Setting Our House in Order Getting it All Together Activity Storming, Norming and Performing Location Multipurpose Room Estimated Time 40 minutes Description Club staff will lead members in discussions on how to establish agreements that will guide their expectations for learning and working together Objective Members will collaboratively develop group agreements that will serve as norms for learning and working together Chart paper What You Need Markers (per member) Tape Normal/Not Normal worksheet (per group) How to Prepare Ensure you have several sheet of chart paper divided into a T-Chart. The chart should be titled Keep/Toss for each group. Place a few pages of chart paper strategically around the room to allow all groups to access a page. Copy the Normal/Not Normal worksheet for each member. Warm Welcome Ask, How would you describe your world today? Allow members to share their answers. Ask, What would your world, as you know it, look like if there were no rules or boundaries? Give members an opportunity to provide responses. Tell members, These are the two questions we will be addressing as we work through today s activity. 4 Say, We will discuss boundaries and rules, and establish group norms. Community Builder Have each member step forward saying his/her name while performing a brief movement of choice for example, clapping or jumping in place. 8 8 of 7

9 Module : Setting Our House in Order 4 5 Then, have the group repeat the member s name and their movement together. Have the members individually say all the other members names with their matching movements before moving on to the next person. Divide members into groups of no more than four or five per group. Provide each group with a copy of the Normal/Not Normal worksheet. Tell members they must select one person to take notes on the chart paper. Say, Each group will determine whether the norms listed on their sheet should be kept or tossed. Tell members they will write all the norms they want to keep on the side of the chart that is labeled, Keep. Tell members to write all the norms they felt should be tossed on the side labeled Toss. Activity Looks Like, Sounds Like, Feels Like Location Computer Lab, Multipurpose Room or Outdoor Learning Space Estimated Time 0 minutes Description Members will use their Keep It/Toss It chart to determine how each norm should look, sound and feel when implemented Objective Members will demonstrate and practice collaboration and reflection within their groups What You Need One computer or tablet per group (one sheet of chart paper per group if computers aren t available) Markers (per member) Keep It or Toss It chart from previous activity (per group) Looks Like, Sounds Like, Feels Like template How to Prepare Ensure there are enough computers, markers and chart paper for each group. 9 9 of 7

10 Module : Setting Our House in Order Ensure you either project or prominently post the Looks Like, Sounds Like, Feels Like template for each group to use as a guide. Warm Welcome Greet members by name as they enter the program area. Engage in meaningful conversations with members. Ask members if they have ever been in an environment without rules. Ask members to describe the experience. Community Builder Tell members that rules help maintain order. Ask members to tell you about one rule they really liked and why Tell members they will keep their same groups from the previous activity to build on their group norms. Say, Now you are going to collaborate on what each norm you have established should look like to anyone observing. Say, You will also use this time to describe what the norm would sound and feel like when implemented or put into practice. Tell members this activity will help avoid misunderstandings or conflict as they continue working together. Have members work in their groups to chart out what each norm would look like if a stranger walked into the room; sound like if a stranger were listening; and feel like if a stranger decided to participate. Say, This is also the time where you all will vote and agree on a group name. Say, The name should reflect the personality of the norms you have collaboratively developed. Reflection and Recognition Estimated Time 0 minutes Ask members to reflect on the norms they have established. Share with a partner which ones will be difficult for individuals or for the group. 13 Module : Setting Our House in Order Just What You Need Activity A Little R&R for the Soul Location Multipurpose Room or Outdoor Learning Space Estimated Time 45 minutes Description Objective Members will use word sentences, like number sentences, to establish meaningful and purposeful rules while exploring industries around the globe By the end of this activity, members will have: Demonstrated how to engage in discourse with other team members in a manner that is positive and productive Conducted research about various industries around the globe Chart paper (per group of four or five) Markers (per member) What You Need Dictionary, thesaurus or internet access to research and explore words (per group) Pack of index cards or card stock paper to create industry cards Copy paper (per group of two or three) Assemble all materials so members can access them easily. How to Prepare On a sheet of paper or large index card, write or print the name of an industry in your city, state or neighborhood. The objective is for members to explore industries and careers that they may be unfamiliar with. Examples include: Information technology, medical, nutrition or mining. Post or project key industry questions prominently for each group to reference:. What is the name of your team s industry?. Provide a brief description of the industry.. What qualifications and educational background must one have to be able to work in this industry? of 7

14 Module : Setting Our House in Order 4. Would your team describe this industry as a global or local industry? Why? 5. What is the typical profile of someone who is successful in this industry? a. Age b. Gender c. Experience 6. What are key rules for working in this industry? Warm Welcome Greet members by name as they enter the program area. Engage in meaningful conversations with members. Ask, If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Community Builder Allow members to share their travel thoughts. Tell members that many countries have different forms of labor based on their citizens needs. Ask members to imagine jobs that would be a part of the country they would like to visit. Which sound interesting to you? Gather members to the center of the activity space. Say, Today we are going to have a bit of fun with words. Tell members they will use word equations to establish rules for how people in different industries should work together. Tell members this activity will depend on the industry they are assigned to. 4 Use the What You Need section to determine team sizes Show the following word equations R-R=R and R+R=R. Ask members what they think each word equation means. Tell members the equations have something to do with industry rules. Examples include: Respect, routines, rituals, etc. Show teams an example of what a word equation might look like: Respect + Routines = Rules; Routines - Respect = Revolt. Have teams research and answer their industry questions. Say, Once you have answered your industry questions, use your word equations to identify words that establish or note industry rules. 4 4 of 7

Location Multipurpose Room or Outdoor Learning Space Estimated Time 0 minutes Description Members will learn that similarities can exist among a group of diverse people Objective Members will engage and express themselves by highlighting similarities between themselves and other Club members What You Need Paper (per member) Writing utensils (per member) How to Prepare Provide each member with a sheet of paper and a writing utensil. Warm Welcome Greet members by name as they enter the program area. Engage in meaningful conversations with members. Provide each member with a sheet of paper and a marker. Have members gather in a circle on the floor. Community Builder Tell members they should write a number ranging from -0 in the center of the paper that reflects how they feel right now. Tell them that 0 is the highest rating and represents a day without any issues. One represents a day that is riddled with hurt or pain. Assure members they will NOT have to explain their ratings; this exercise is just a pulse check. However, let them know they can talk more if they need to. Tell members to write down five things they like or love that others may not know about them. Put members in groups of no more than 5 and have each member count off starting with one. Tell members that the odd numbers will speak first. 4 Explain to members that they should share one thing they like or love from their list. If a member has a similarity with the person 5 5 of 7

16 Module : Setting Our House in Order speaking, they should stand up and say, Me Too! Tell them the goal is to try not to repeat something someone else has already said. Example: Club member number one stands up and says, I love chocolate ice cream, but my mother only likes vanilla. Any member who feels the same way will stand and say, Me too! This process should move rather quickly. Each member should be provided with an opportunity to say something they like or love. Reflection and Recognition Estimated Time 0 minutes Ask members to share feedback on activities from today. Ask members to name some important thoughts about their experience. Ask members how they can infuse what they learned into their daily lives. 6 6 of 7

Location Multipurpose Room or Outdoor Learning Space Estimated Time 45 minutes Description Objective Members will engage and express themselves by sharing stories of support from people in their lives with another team member Members will become aware of people or entities that can provide assistance when they are faced with issues What You Need Who Do I Call When I Need Help? worksheet (per member) Writing utensils (per member) How to Prepare Ensure you have enough worksheets for each Club member. Lay out writing utensils. Warm Welcome Greet members by name as they enter the program area. Engage in meaningful conversations with members. Assemble members in the learning space. Community Builder Ask members if they have ever been disappointed by someone who they thought they could depend on. Ask members to share how that experience made them feel. Allow at least three to five members to share. Group members in teams of two and ask them to share a time they received help from someone at home or at school. Tell members to describe the type of help they received. Give members ten minutes to share their stories. Say, Now share a time you helped someone. Give members five to ten minutes for this activity. 7 7 of 7

18 Module : Setting Our House in Order 4 5 Ask members to share their stories about helping someone or receiving help from someone. Let three to five members share. This should take approximately 0 minutes. Give each member a worksheet and tell them to write the name of all the people they would choose to ask for help. Advise them to think about why they chose those people while they are completing the worksheet. Give members approximately 5 minutes to complete the activity. 6 Ask for volunteers to share. Activity Palm Reader Location Multipurpose Room Estimated Time 0 minutes Description Objective Members will learn more about their team members through palm reading and create a fun group display Members learn the power of asking meaningful questions to engage peers and build networks Copy or construction paper (per member) What You Need Markers or colored pencils (per member) Scissors How to Prepare Spread all materials out to provide members easy access. Warm Welcome Greet members by name as they enter the program area. Engage in meaningful conversations with members. Community Builder Tell members this activity is exciting in many ways. Ask members if they have ever felt like they could predict something that would happen. Allow members to respond. 8 8 of 7

19 Module : Setting Our House in Order Say, Today, you will read palms! Let s see what happens next! Gather members in a circle and have them count off by s and s. Tell all s they are paired with the right next to them. Have each pair collect paper and colored pencils. 4 5 Say, This is an opportunity for you to learn more about your partner. Ask members to trace their partner s hands on paper and cut them out. Members should write one question on one side of each finger. Note: It may be helpful for you to provide some questions, however members may have fun creating their own questions. Examples: What is your favorite food? What are you most afraid of? Tell members to decoratively write their names in the center of the palm and the answers to their questions on the opposite side of each finger. Ask members to share their answers with the rest of the group. 6 Display the hands on the wall for an informational art showcase! Reflection and Recognition Estimated Time 0 minutes Ask, What was the most interesting thing you learned today? Allow members to share their responses. Remind members of their community norms. Advise them to be respectful of others at all times. Ask members if they would consider their palm reading partner someone they could go to for help now that they have learned more about them. 9 9 of 7

Warm Welcome Greet members by name as they enter the program area. Engage in meaningful conversations with members. Community Builder Gather members in a circle. Say, Today, we are going to create our own language. Tell members to use their imagination and pretend they are from a different planet. Tell them to think of a sound or movement that would be used to say hello on their fictional planet. Give members a few minutes to create something. Ask each member to use their new language to greet the Club member on their left with their unique alien greeting. Allow each member to share their greeting and their rationale for how they developed their language. Gather members and tell them they have three minutes to move and chat with another member in the room who they have not worked with. Tell them they should ask the members two questions:. Would you rather be wealthy, famous or happy?. What s one thing you would like to accomplish before you turn 8? Tell members you will play a sound at the end of three minutes. At that time, they will rotate to another member. Have members repeat this exercise three times. Allow members to share what they learned about everyone they came into contact with. of 7

Examples could include: Driving should be legal at the age of 5 in every state Youth between the ages of -8 should not have curfews Self-driving cars should be allowed on the highway Write each prompt on chart paper or project them for members to reference. Warm Welcome Greet members by name as they enter the program area. Engage in meaningful conversations with members. Community Builder Ask members to tell you about the number one news story they have heard recently. Ask members why that story stuck out for them. Allow them to share how they initially felt when they heard the story. Ask them to share whether that story changed their way of thinking. Tell members to form a circle within a circle aim for an equal number of members for each circle. Have members inside the circle turn and face those in the outside circle. of 7

Ensure all materials are placed out for members. Warm Welcome Greet members by name as they enter the program area. Engage in meaningful conversations with members. Community Builder Tell members that this is their chance to express their feelings about rules in our society. Say, During this activity, you will only have one rule to respect one another. Divide members into groups of four or five. Tell members they are to write a skit or play and they must choose whether to represent a society with rules or a society without rules. 4 4 of 7

25 Module : Setting Our House in Order Remind members to make sure they respect each other while developing their plays. Explain that their plays must clearly declare a position: Rules or no rules. Provide members with paper to write on or a computer for play development. Tell members they will have 45 minutes to develop their short skit/play. 26 Module : Setting Our House in Order Allow each group to present their play/skit. After each performance, have youth lead a discussion with audience. What did this show you about rules? Do you want more or less of them in your life? Is it okay to ignore group rules? Reflection and Recognition.. Once the audience has gone, allow each group to discuss what they felt went well and what they would want to change for the future. Have each youth stand along an imaginary line with one side being no rules and one side being very structured and regimented. Discuss as a group what they have learned and how they have changed their minds over the week. 6 6 of 7
