PARCC Practice Tools A guidance document to provide your students with the situational learning needed to successfully navigate and utilize the accessibility features available on the PARCC assessments. Prepared by the MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit Office of Shared Accountability Montgomery County Public Schools February 2018 edition

As our high-stakes testing continues to move in the direction of on-line testing platforms, it is important for our students to have had the opportunity to practice and become familiar with the PearsonAccess next (PAN) testing platform and all of its functions. The following document will provide guidance to instructional leadership teams and teachers to make informed decisions about how to incorporate these situational opportunities into their daily lessons and grade level activities leading up to the test administration. There are three options for conducting practice PARCC tests. There are advantages and disadvantages to all three based on the needs of each school, each grade level team. A synopsis of each is below to review. This document is also formatted so that each option can be printed and copies for school staff to utilize. But first, we present a guidance document for how to navigate within the TestNav testing platform and also an orientation to the accessibility features that are available to all students. Quick Guide - TestNav Navigation and Accessibility Features for All Students Pgs. 4-9 This quick guide can be used to show the students the navigation tools and accessibility features that are available to all students in the TestNav platform. This is a great base-line familiarity tool prior to be utilized prior to testing and may be copied to share with teachers as they work with their students during class instruction. Option #1 parcc.pearson.com (non-secure) Pgs Sample Items Tutorials Full-length Practice Tests (paper and online regular and accommodated forms available) Three different types of test preparation are presented at the parcc.pearson.com website. Although Sample Items are presented first in the drop-down menu, we would suggest having your students go through the Tutorials first to acclimate themselves to the accessibility features of the TestNav testing platform. The Tutorial will introduce the students to TestNav 8, the computer program used for PARCC online testing. The Tutorial will help students learn how to find their way through tests using different buttons and screens, and also show students how to use the tools in the toolbar. In the Tutorial, students will get the change to practice with the actions and tool they will use during PARCC testing. Accommodated Tutorials (text-to-speech, screen reader, non-screen reader, American Sign Language and Spanish computer based mathematics (limited to high school students in algebra only), Equation Tutorials and Graphing Calculator Tutorials are also available. Sample Items is a good in-class experience that allows students to try out practice items that include a variety of question types, such as videos, multiple choice, multiple selection, and drag and drop. Teachers can use all or part of the Sample Items presented and review with the class or small group during teacher directed instruction. The Full-length Practice Tests are just that, full tests that contain multiple units just as the real PARCC assessments. These Full-length Practice Tests can be done on-line or printed on Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

paper. Accommodated versions of these tests are available in the following versions: text-tospeech (no graphics or with graphics), screen reader, non-screen reader, American Sign Language and Spanish computer based mathematics (limited to high school students in algebra only). The practice test platforms have a default login of Guest, however, users can choose to enter a name or numeric value as a students login when they begin. This is for the teacher s reference when printing reports at the end of the scorable practice tests. This information is not captured or maintained in the system, therefore there is no downloadable report or spreadsheet of student data (see page 27). Option #2 TestNav App (non-secure) Pgs This practice option is simple to use as the TestNav App is already installed on system chromebooks, desktop and laptop computers. By the click of the mouse or touch pad, students can easily get into the TestNav tools to practice with the student accessibility features without having to enter a website address. This flexibility allows teachers to work with small groups or individual students on an as needed basis throughout their instructional period or day. Option #3 PearsonAccess next Training Center (secure) Pgs The Pearson Access next Training Center provides a full length mock practice test complete with Student Testing Tickets and test monitoring that STCs would see during the live PARCC assessments. This practice option is beneficial for schools to conduct as their technology infrastructure trial and to walk through test security measures. The training site does contain accommodated assessments where STCs can practice editing Personal Needs Profiles (PNPs) of students to ensure their particular accommodations are engaged in the testing platform. SCHOOL TIP: All three practice options contain the same test questions, in different order. School leadership teams will need to be aware of this as they make decisions regarding scheduling practice assessments across the grade level and within individual classrooms. SCHOOL TIP: Segments of this Practice Tools document can also be printed for teachers and staff based on the decisions of the Instructional Leadership Team and the school s Testing Team. It can also be pushed out to teachers to pull up on their classroom computer. In addition to these guiding directions, refer to the PAN Guide for detailed instructions on the function and use of PAN. The ruler will appear on the screen once clicked on in the toolbar. The student will be able to move it around on the screen to take their measurement. Grade 3 Math uses a 1/4 inch ruler Grade 4-8 Math use 1/8 inch Ruler Protractor Protractors are a required tool for grades 4-7 and are an allowable tool for grade 8 and high school. The ruler will appear on the screen once clicked on in the toolbar. The student will be able to move it around on the screen to take their measurement. Zoom and Magnifier Tool During the test, students can make the text or images bigger on the screen by holding down the CTRL and plus (+) key on the keyboard. To make text and images smaller hold down the CTRL and minus (-) key to reset to the orginal size use the CTRL and zero (0) key. There is also a magnifier tool to enlarge one part of the screen, by selecting Enable Magnifier from the drop-down menu in the upper right part of the screen by where the students name appears Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

Line Reader The Line Reader tool allows the students to see only one line of text at a time. To enable Line Reader from the drop-down menu in the upper right part of the screen by where the students name appears. Highlight Text The Highlight Text tool allows the student to choose a color to highlight a word or group of words with a specific color. To activate the highlighter, the student can click and drag, doubleclick, or right-click on a word or section of a word, and then drag to select further words. The student then selects their preferred highlighting color. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

Word Processing Features Bold, Italics, Underlining, Bullets, Numbered Lists, Undo, Redo, Spell Check and Character Count Students can turn on the spell check when answering an item that requires a textual, extended response. When spell check is on, a squiggly red line appears underneath misspelled words, and students see word suggestions for misspelled words. Spell check does not check words that are all in caps (HELLO) or words that are inverse camel cased (CaMeL). It does check regular camel case (camel). Spell check uses the Hunspell dictionary and requires an Internet connection to compare the typed words with the dictionary on Pearson servers. If there is no Internet connection, spell check does not check the words. Spell check may not be available on all Brief Constructed Response items. The icon will appear when available. There is also a limit to the number of characters and spaces available per question. In this screen shot, there are 902 characters and spaces left (shown in the far right box) for the student to use in their answer. Exhibits Students will find this feature along the right side of the testing screen. As an example, here is where they will click on Exhibits to find the online version of the Mathematics Reference Sheets or other reference materials such as a periodic table in MISA. Using the Pull-Down Menu or the Testing icon drop-down menu, select Sessions OR In the Search drop-down menu, check Show all results. Before a Test Administrator can start a session and have students begin logging in, a session must be prepared by School Test Coordinators. Preparing the session will assign a form to the students in the session. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

Select the sessions you want to Prepare by checking the box next to the session name. With PearsonAccess next you are able to manage multiple sessions at a time. Next to the word Sessions at the top of the screen click on the hyperlink Go to Students in Sessions. On the left side of the page you will see a Session List. This view allows a school to monitor one single session or multiple sessions at a time. 1. Click on the session(s) you want to prepare on the Session List. 2. Click the blue Prepare Session on the right side of the screen. This screen will not automatically refresh so the STC will need to pause for up to 30 seconds. 3. Click the blue Refresh button to see an updated screen. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

To Start an individual session, click on the session name in the list and click the Start button. This will only start students that are in the selected session. After you start a session you will see the screen change again. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

How to Unlock/Lock Student Tests 1. To unlock a unit from the unit level, slide the button from the left (locked) to the right (unlocked). 2. When you do this, the students listed below will show their Unit 1 test in a Ready unlocked status. 3. To unlock or lock a unit for one student, select the drop down next to the students unit status. For make-up testing, you will need to first lock any unit to be skipped and then unlock the unit to be administered by clicking on the student s Ready status and selecting Unlock. STC Note: Only one unit can be unlocked for each student at a time. When multiple units are open at the student level, you will see the Mixed at the session view to indicate multiple student test statuses (i.e. Active, Exited, Completed, Ready). To Lock or Unlock all units at a time from the session, click the drop-down next to Mixed and select either Unlock All or Lock All. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

Monitor the Test Administration STCs should closely monitor the administration of the PARCC Practice Test as it is being conducted. Be actively involved in the test administration by carefully supervising the procedures described in the TACM. Be available to answer questions and deal with problems as they arise. STCs may view the status of each Test Session and student through the online system. The boxes in the Student Test Status column for each student indicate the student s real-time test status. As students work through the test session, their status will not automatically change on the screen in the wide session bar. Click the Refresh button to update the test session screen as testing is monitored. In this example, there is one (1) student who has not started the test and there is one (1) student who has exited the test. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

Under the Testing icon in the middle of the page, select Sessions from the drop-down menu. How to Resume a Student s Test In the Search drop-down menu, check Show all results. Single Student Click the drop-down arrow next to the students name and select Resume. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

The student resumed will now show Resumed status. Resuming Multiple Students Check the box next to the name(s) of the students that need to be resumed. Under the Select Tasks dropdown menu, check Resume Student Tests and click the Start button. Check the box next to any student s name that needs to be resumed and click the Resume button. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

You will see the green Success bar when students have been resumed. STC Tip: Click Exit Tasks to return to Students in Session screen. The students resumed will now show Resumed status. Clearing Students from the Task List PAN remembers the last task that you have done under each function. When working with resuming students, the STC needs to remember to clear the list by clicking the Clear link after resuming any students. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

How to Stop a Test Session When testing is finished, the STCs will need to ensure all Test Sessions have been Stopped. In order to stop a Test Session, all students must be in the Completed status for each test unit. For practice tests, this is not an absolutely necessary step, however it is good practice for the actual administration. Under the Testing dropdown menu in the middle of the page select Sessions. In the Search drop-down, check Show all results and check the box next to the Test Session you want to stop. Select the session you wish to stop. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February

Next to the word Sessions click on the hyperlink Go to Students in Sessions. When you have chosen the session you wish to stop, click the Stop button on the left side of the page. The Stop button will be red. After a session is stopped you will notice the button turns red in the Session List. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February
