3 Tés branché? Program Overview EMC s T es branché? program responds to the needs of today s learners, for whom technology is at the center of their learning. With an essential question at the heart of each unit, T es branché? provides engaging experiences for students with the French language and francophone culture, treating them as social actors, not passive recipients of culture. The T es branché? Program was written to incorporate the National Standards: Communication: Students work in the Interpersonal, Presentational, and Interpretive modes. Cultures: Students investigate the Practices, Products, and Perspectives of the 21 Spanishspeaking countries. Connections: Students connect to other disciplines such as geography, math, and ecology. Comparisons: Students compare their culture(s) to the Spanish-speaking cultures they encounter in the program. Communities: Students build communities at school and outside the classroom by reaching out to Spanish speakers in their region and around the world. An essential question is provided for each unit to help teachers and students examine the unit theme on a deeper level. Analysis questions are placed throughout the text to encourage higher order thinking skills and to connect to Common Core State Standards. Whatever element you are teaching, T es branché? provides the necessary tools to address students needs. Program Outcomes 1. T es branché? was created for 21 st century language learners. Its primary goal is to make learning the French language and cultures relevant to today s students, and help them develop proficiency in French. 2. With T es branché?, students are encouraged to take active participation in the language learning process, as they complete communicative activities that prompt them to think, research, compare, solve problems, and collaborate. 3. T es branché? provides differentiated approaches that make language acquisition a successful experience for all language learners. 4. T es branché? works to create global citizens who are cognizant of diverse topics of interests about French and Francophone cultures; who make connections to various disciplines; and who become open-minded about cultural practices, products, and perspectives that differ from their own. 3
4 Student Text Description Available in print or ebook Unit opener Each unit begins with a Question central that frames the units contents. Vocabulaire actif Each lesson begins with colorful photos or illustrations that introduce coherent vocabulary groupings in a meaningful context. Rencontres culturelles A short dialogue that dramatizes a situation typical of everyday life in Francophone regions. Written in France, these dialogues use authentic French speech and current expressions. Extension More advanced dialogue that requires students to read in context and perhaps look up some words in their French-English dictionary. A critical thinking question follows each of these dialogues. Points de depart Information about the francophone world is presented, in English through Unit 5, then in French beginning with Unit 6. These notes reflect the themes introduced in the first dialogue in the Rencontres culturelles section. Du côté des medias In this section, students read or skim or scan francophone realia and answer questions or complete an activity based on it. The realia ties into one of the notes in the Points de départ. À vous la parole Students have an opportunity to practice interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive communication here as well as in the vocabulary and grammar sections. Lecture thématique Authentic texts in French are studied with scaffolding that allows students to learn about literature, Francophone authors, and francophone art. Vocabulaire All words and expressions introduced as active vocabulary in T es branché? appear in the end-of unit vocabulary list. Bilan cumulative Based on the AP exam, this section appears after every even-numbered unit and provides an assessment of listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Prononciation Written by a pronunciation expert in France who works with English speakers, it centers on pronunciation problems English speakers have with French sounds and pronunciation patterns. Stratégie communicative Students learn various strategies for successful function-based oral and written communication activities. Student Program Resources Textbook has the core material to engage and motivate students to become life-long French learners. 4

Workbook reviews textbook material through written exercises that reinforce students language skills and cultural awareness. Students investigate culture in-depth through Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational activities as well as synthesize their experience through a Critical Reflection task. i-culture Students explore language and culture beyond the classroom. i-culture immerses students in the products, perspectives, and practices of the Spanish-speaking world., i-culture engages students through varied media including news articles, video documentaries, and songs. i- Culture digital assets (i-passport, i-videos, i-news, and i-songs) are purposefully leveled and program non-specific so all students can enjoy the materials and demonstrate learning through built-in comprehension activities and online enrichment. Flipgrid Flipgrid encourages students to start speaking immediately in Spanish. Teachers create questions or prompts, and students respond through short video responses which are shared out with classmates. Avenue - Avenue is an innovative video-assessment platform that allows students to develop and demonstrate oral proficiency while making it easy for teachers to assess students. Teachers can create their own custom speaking tasks, or choose from a preloaded library of already created tasks. About the Author Toni Theisen, the 2009 ACTFL Teacher of the Year and ACTFL President in 2013, is a National Board Certified Teacher of French at Loveland High School in Loveland, Colorado and the Thompson School District World Language Curriculum Representative. She holds an M.A. in Foreign Language Teaching and an M. A. in Education of Diverse Learners. She is also a Google Certified teacher. A passionate and active world language advocate, Theisen has presented numerous workshops, 6
7 keynotes, and webinars for national, regional, and state conferences and institutes. Also an author, she has written several middle and high school French language series and many articles on Multiple Intelligences, Differentiated Instruction, and Technology for the 21st-century learner. Theisen presented Activating Communication as part of the first ACTFL Webinar series and also presented at the 2011 LARC (National Language Acquisition Resource Center) STARTALK Institute at San Diego State University. Theisen led the effort in 2009 to revise the Colorado World Languages Academic Standards and co-chaired the revision committee of the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards for WLOE (World Languages Other than English) in Most recently she chaired the ACTFL 21st Century Skills Map committee in collaboration with the Partnership for 21st Century Learning. Thiesen s many additional honors include the ACTFL Nelson Brooks Award for the Teaching of Culture, the Colorado Governor s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the SWCOLT Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Genevieve Overman Memorial Service Award from the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers. Jacques Pécheur is the Chief Editor of the French review Le français dans le monde. He has worked as Director of the Cultural Center of Palermo and Sicily, and as Cultural Ambassador to the French Embassy in Switzerland. As head of the Mission to the General Delegation for the Languages of France (DGLF), Pécheur has conducted numerous missions to promote multilingualism, the French language, and la Francophonie in the world. He also worked for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Council, the European Union, and the Intergovernmental Agency of la Francophonie (AIF). As such he was entrusted with conducting and managing conferences and training workshops in more than 50 countries. Pécheur s numerous involvements in political, cultural, and language-related occupations have led him to gain expertise in language policies and the language marketplace. As someone who has developed many strategies to promote the learning of French, Pécheur has been a spokesman in numerous conferences related to language learning, and has published many articles. His 20 years of experience in Le francais dans le monde, as well as his many publications on French civilization, cinema, and contemporary literature, have shaped his proactive approach to the editorial world. Honorary member of the AATF, Pécheur is recognized in the United States by the Cultural Services of the French Consulate in the United States (SCAC), the Alliance Française, and many American universities. 7
