1 French Fall 013 MWF :00 am- :50 am 8 Social Work Complex A Websites: elearn.uta.edu, Centro Course Code: FDMX3 Instructor: Alicia Soueid Office: 8 Hammond Hall Soueid@uta.edu Office Hours: T :00am- 1:00pm, Th 10:00am- :00am COURSE GOALS: French 31 is the fourth course in the lower- level sequence for the study of French at UT- Arlington. Students who successfully complete this course should be able to (1) read a short text and answer questions about it in French, () write a paragraph in French about a familiar topic, (3) comprehend spoken statements about familiar topics, () discuss familiar topics in complete sentences, and (5) discuss aspects of French and francophone cultures. REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS: You are expected to bring your text to class every day unless otherwise instructed. COURSE COMPONENTS En Avant: Beginning French. (Anderson, Golato & Blatty, 0) Online Workbook (Centro) to accompany En Avant: Beginning French The En Avant textbook and Centro access code to the online workbook are available as a bundle in the UT- Arlington Bookstore. You can also purchase the access code to the online workbook at the Centro Bookstore website: CHAPTER EXAMS. Each exam covers grammar and vocabulary presented in that chapter, as well as supplemental material covered in class. If you miss an exam for illness or other reason, you must submit a note from a doctor or other suitable written documentation to your instructor in order to make up the exam. If you know you will be missing an exam in advance, please inform your instructor of this prior to the exam in order to make appropriate arrangements. FINAL EXAM. The final exam focuses on the last chapter of study but is also comprehensive in nature. If the exam is missed, documentation of an emergency must be submitted to the instructor in order to make it up. QUIZZES. Quizzes over vocabulary, grammatical structures, listening comprehension, pronunciation, or communicative skills will be given regularly. Quizzes will begin promptly at the beginning of the class. As such, it is important that you arrive in class on time. Quizzes cannot be made up, but one (1) extra credit quiz opportunity will be offered towards the end of the semester to replace your lowest quiz grade. A signed Honor Code will count as a quiz grade, as well. HOMEWORK: Online Centro workbook exercises will be assigned regularly. This work must be submitted by :5 pm on the evening before the following class period. For all Centro exercises, your best attempt from the first five tries is recorded as your score. No homework grades will be dropped due to illness or absence, but one (1) extra credit opportunity will be provided towards the end of the semester, which can be averaged in with your homework grades. PARTICIPATION. Exposure to and interaction with a foreign language is essential in order to develop language skills. For this reason, active participation in class activities is a required part of this course. Frequent absences will result in a lower participation grade, zeros on quizzes, and thus in a lower grade in the course. Likewise, tardiness will result in missed announcements, a lower participation grade, and low quiz grades. Tardiness is also disruptive and disrespectful to the instructor and other students. Therefore, you should attend class regularly and plan to arrive a little early. ESSAYS: You will write a first draft of each essay in class and will correct and upload the final draft to SafeAssign on Blackboard. If you miss class the day of the essay, you must submit written documentation of an excused absence in order to make up the essay. Final drafts that are not uploaded on time will be subject to a 0- point grade reduction.

2 ADDITIONAL POLICIES PLACEMENT EXAM. Native speakers and students who studied French previously and found 1 unchallenging may wish to take the CLEP test through the Testing Services Center before enrolling in 313. For additional information, go to services/credit- by- examination/clep.php. POLICY. correspondence to your instructor must originate from your UTA account and should include your full name, the class and section number you are enrolled in, and a polite greeting and farewell. If you need information pertaining to class assignments, grades, policies, or instructor office hours, please consult the class syllabus and Blackboard before ing the instructor. Information regarding diagnostic criteria and policies can be found at or by calling (817) DROP POLICY: Students may drop or swap classes through self- service in MyMav from the beginning of the registration period through the late registration period. After the late registration period, students must see their major advisor to drop a class or withdraw. It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw if they do not plan to attend after registering. Students will not be automatically dropped for non- attendance. FINAL REVIEW WEEK. A period of five class days prior to the first day of final examinations in the long sessions shall be designated as Final Review Week. During this week, there shall be no scheduled activities such as required field trips or performances; and no instructor shall assign any themes, research problems or exercises of similar scope that have a completion date during or following this week unless specified in the class syllabi. During Final Review Week, an instructor shall not give any examinations constituting 10% or more of the final grade, except makeup tests and laboratory examinations. In addition, no instructor shall give any portion of the final examination during Final Review Week. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES. The University of Texas at Arlington provides a variety of resources and programs designed to help students develop academic skills, deal with personal situations and better understand concepts to related to their courses. These resources include tutoring, learning centers, developmental education, advising and mentoring, personal counseling and federally funded programs. For individualized referrals to resources for any reason, students may contact the Maverick Resource Hotline at or visit for more information. STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY. At the end of the term, students will be asked to complete a Student Feedback Survey (SFS). Instructions on how to access the SFS will be sent directly to each student through MavMail approximately 10 days before the end of the term. Each student s feedback enters the SFS database anonymously and is aggregated with that of other students in the course. The Language Acquisition Center (LAC), located on the 3rd floor of Trimble Hall, offers audio, video and computer services for UTA foreign language students. LAC hours and holidays are posted at the LAC entrance. A student ID will be required to check out materials for use in the LAC. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES. BY the end of each chapter you should be able to do the following: Chapter : Narrate stories and events that occurred in the past; describe rooms & furniture in a home Chapter 10: Be familiar with several French or francophone holidays; use the impératif to give commands Chapter : Discuss future plans, including career and personal goals

3 ACADEMIC INTEGRITY. All students enrolled in this course are expected to adhere to the UT Arlington Honor Code. However, with the exception of help from the student's instructor, outside assistance on graded assignments is not allowed and is considered cheating. Likewise, you can consult dictionaries and textbooks for grammatical rules, usage, and translation of words or short phrases, but the use of a translation engine to translate phrases or sentences on graded assignments is forbidden and is considered a form of plagiarism.
