1 PRE-CALCULUS 11 COURSE OUTLINE Teacher: Mr. A Tsui Room: Portable # 1 Website: Course Description: Pre-Calculus11isdesignedforstudentswhointendtostudy calculus and related mathematics or sciences as part of their post-secondary education. It builds on the topics studied in Foundation of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10, and also provides the background knowledge and skills for Calculus 12. The course consists, primarily of higher level studies in theoretical mathematics. Emphasis is put on problem solving and critical-thinking skills required for Calculus, or related disciplines, when in post-secondary programs. The topics of study include algebra, quadratic functions, reciprocal functions, system of linear and quadratic functions, andtrigonometry. This is a challenging and demanding course where the student must be driven and self-motivated in order to succeed. RATIONALE: Students are expected to: Use communication in order to learn and express their understanding Make connections among mathematical ideas, other concepts in mathematics, everyday experiences and other disciplines Demonstrate fluency with mental mathematics and estimation Develop and apply new mathematical knowledge through problem solving Develop mathematical reasoning Select and use technology as a tool for learning and solving problems Develop visualization skills to assist in processing information, making connections and solving problems All of these mathematical processes are based on the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol (WNCP) Common Curriculum Framework for Grades Mathematics. CLASS PROCEDURES: EQUIPMENT - Supplies required for EVERY class 1. You will need a BINDER WITH PAPER for notes and assignments. You are required to keep a neat and well organized notebook throughout the term. You are responsible to keep your notebook up-to-date (I.E. if you are absent you should borrow a friends notebook to copy any notes that you may have missed or speak to the teacher.)

SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR Students will NOT be allowed to return to their lockers for supplies after the bell has rung for class to begin. TEXTBOOK: We will be using Pre-calculus 11 by McGraw Hill Ryerson. An e-text is posted on Mr. Tsui s webpage and students will not be issued a hard copy. This arrangement will help the students not to worry about carrying excess weight (textbook is heavy) from home to school and back. The textbook will be supplemented with worksheets. ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance is essential for success. This course is taught in a sequential manner, with new material covered in each and every class. It is the student s responsibility to check Mr. Tsui s website for missed notes and assignments in addition to seeing the teacher when they return. Mr. Tsui s website will have the following: Daily lesson notes with assignments (updated daily) Extra review worksheets for the unit test An electronic copy of the textbook Teacher for contact If you are absent for any reason, you should check the website for missed notes and assignments! EXPECTATIONS: 1. Be on time. When the bell goes you should be quietly seated in your desk following the directions on the overhead or white board. 2. Be prepared. Show up to class with all the necessary equipment. 3. Be Considerate of Others. Your behavior at all times should show your respect for the needs of other people in the class. If someone else is speaking, you should be listening. Treat others as you want to be treated. 4. Reach your potential. Assignments will usually consist of completing exercises assigned during class. As work is assigned for your benefit, it is essential thatitbe completed. Completing all assignments, keeping an organized binder, daily review and studying are some of the necessary steps for success.

3 TESTS: If you are absent on the day of a test you must bring a note from your parent /guardian explaining your absence. A missed test can be written before school, after school, or at lunch, but not during class time. If tests are consistently missed due to poor attendance a mark of zero may result. Sleeping in is not considered a legitimate excuse. ASSIGNMENTS: Assignments will be collected, and checked for completion at the end of each chapter. Any work assigned but not completed for class is assumed tobe completed at home. The last day for submitting the assignments is the day of writing that unit test. (Solutions of each assignment is posted on Mr. Tsui s website) QUIZZES: Generally, students will be given notice about an upcoming quiz, however some small quizzes may be administered at any time. If you are absent from class when a quiz is given, you must see the teacher when you return and make up the quiz ON THAT DAY. TUTORIALS: Do not suffer silently. Help is available before school, at lunch, or by appointment in Portable #1. Students should seek help at the first sign of difficulty. EVALUATION: Your marks will be broken down as follows: SCHOOL MARK Chapter s.65% Assignments, Practice. 15% Quizzes....20% TERM 1 40% TERM 2 40% FINAL MARK SCHOOL MARK 80% FINAL EXAM... 20%
