1 YEAR 6 TRINITY TERM EXAMINATIONS 2014 SUBJECT LENGTH EXAM FORMAT Maths 1 hour Written paper (non-calculator) The main focus of the exam will be. KEY TOPICS Term 3 Probability / Line Graphs Can use the terms impossible/unlikely/even chance/likely, certain to describe the probability of a given outcome Can place the likelihood of outcomes on a probability scale from 0 to 1 Can express the probability of an outcome as a fraction (and as a percentage and decimal) Can find the probability of a combination of two independent events happening (e.g. picking two blue socks with replacement) Can find the probability of a combination of two dependent events happening (e.g. picking two blue socks without replacement) Know that the probabilities of all possible mutually exclusive events happening added together is always1 Can work out all the outcomes possible from two combined experiments (e.g. rolling two dice) Can determine if a game is fair or unfair Can draw and interpret line graphs representing a variable changing over time (e.g. temperature throughout the day) There will also be a smaller number of questions on Term 1 and Term 2 topics. Term 1 Ratios / Four operations with fractions Understand meaning of ratios as relationship between quantities Can use ratio to find number of a certain item given the number of the other item

2 Can share quantity in a given ratio Can increase a ratio to achieve a certain difference between quantities of items Understand the link between ratio and proportion Can use the unitary method to solve proportion problems Can manipulate quantities which are inversely proportional Can add proper fractions (and mixed numbers) Can subtract fractions Can multiply fractions Can divide fractions Can use skills to solve fraction word problems Term 2 Transformations / Triangle Construction Can translate a 2D shape on a grid and describe a given translation Can reflect a 2D shape on a grid (with straight or diagonal line of reflection) and describe a given reflection Can rotate a 2D shape on a grid and describe a given rotation Can enlarge a 2D shape on a grid and describe a given enlargement (includes negative or fractional scale factors) For enlargements, can use the linear scale factor to determine the area and volume scale factors Can construct triangles given either: o SIDE/ANGLE/SIDE, ANGLE/SIDE/ANGLE (using ruler and protractor) o SIDE/SIDE/SIDE (using ruler and compass) There will be a number of review questions at the start of the paper, covering the basic numeracy skills of four operations (+, -,, ) and using fractions-decimals-percentages. There will also be a number of problem solving questions to conclude the paper. 3 English 1 hour 15 minutes Reading comprehension (prose and poetry comprehensions) Two sections lasting 35 minutes each (+5 minutes reading time) (25 marks for each section) PAPER 1 SECTION A: PROSE COMPREHENSION In this section, the boys will be presented with a piece of unseen prose. Close reading will be required, followed by the answering of a series of questions on the passage. These questions will require the boys to: - work out inferred and hidden meaning of certain words and phrases - discuss the use of imagery and figurative language used by the writer - comment on mood and feel of a passage - scan the whole passage and embed short quotes from it into a longer answer which analyses one or two of the characters and their characteristics SECTION B: POETRY COMPREHENSION In this section, the boys will be presented with a piece of unseen poetry. Close reading will be required, followed by the answering of a series of questions on the passage. These questions will require the boys to: - comment on the rhythm and rhyme used in the poem - discuss figurative language used by the poet - comment on any other poetic devices the poet has used and what effect they have on the poem - scan the poem, drawing evidence from the whole of it and embedding quotes in a longer answer Vocabulary, spelling, grammar, punctuation and presentation are all important and will be taken into account.

4 1 hour 15 minutes Grammar/punctuation and creative writing Two sections lasting 35 minutes each (+5 minutes checking time) (25 marks for each section) PAPER 2 SECTION A: GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION This paper will require the boys to firstly punctuate a passage, adding in all of the necessary punctuation. There will then be a series of questions testing the parts of speech that have been covered this year (nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, pronouns as well as agreement) SECTION B: CREATIVE WRITING There will be a choice of 4 titles for the boys to interpret in any way they wish. They are advised to focus on: - developing character - creating the correct setting - basing ideas on personal experience Vocabulary, spelling, grammar, punctuation and presentation are all important and will be taken into account. 5 Science 1 hour CE 11+ paper (80 marks). Mixture of short answer questions, missing words & longer answer questions. Boys need to revise the whole year s coverage (boys have been given a copy of the syllabus which sets this out).
