1 IN 395A LEADING ACROSS CULTURES: INTERNSHIP SEMINAR IES Abrad Lndn DESCRIPTION: This curse prvides an intrductin t the cultural cntext fr the internship placement by examining cultural issues in the wrkplace with a particular fcus n preparatin fr entering the wrk envirnment. Writing and discussin tpics als intrduce the cncept f skill-building in crss-cultural cmpetencies including crss-cultural cmmunicatin, teamwrk, and cnflict mediatin. The curse cnsists f tw parts: nline pre-departure mdules that prepare students fr culturally apprpriate résumé develpment and interviewing skills t facilitate prper placements, and n-site classrm discussins t enable students t prcess what they experience at the internship hst rganizatins. CREDITS: 3 credits CONTACT HOURS: 25 hurs LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English (may als be ffered in Spanish in Barcelna) INSTRUCTOR: TBD METHOD OF PRESENTATION: In bth the nline and classrm segments, the seminar prvides a rbust learning envirnment with active discussin f readings, integratin f internship experiences, and field studies. The seminar meets fr 25 cntact hurs. Students spend clck hurs at the internship placement site, depending n the needs f the hst cmpany. REQUIRED WORK AND FORM OF ASSESSMENT: Active participatin in nline cntent (10%); Active participatin in seminar based n assigned reading, (10%); Weekly Internship jurnal (15%); Shrt analytical paper based n a seminar tpic and related t the internship experience (25%); On-site evaluatin by wrk supervisr via a midpint prgress meeting and final evaluatin utilizing IES Abrad metric (40%). Internship Jurnal. Weekly Jurnal entries track yur learning and develpment at the placement. Entries shuld include wrk activities, critical incidents that gave yu insight int the wrk envirnment, bservatins f hw leadership is exercised, and reading respnses. At least tw f the writing assignments are directed. Each jurnal entry shuld be 2-3 type-written pages, duble-spaced ( wrds). Analytical Paper. Yur analytical paper is an pprtunity fr yu t evaluate yur verall internship experience as well as yur persnal and prfessinal develpment ver the curse f the semester. This is als an pprtunity t reflect upn the ways in which yur wn values, experiences, interests, beliefs, and cultural preferences have influenced yur learning experience while living and wrking abrad. The paper shuld include a descriptin f yur bservatins, differences nted between yur hme and hst cultures that may have played a rle in wrk situatins and hw yu think yur glbal cmpetence has been strengthened by what yu have learned frm yur experiences. The paper shuld be 5-6 typewritten pages, duble spaced. LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end f the curse students will be able t: Apply written and ral cmmunicatin skills that are apprpriate t the wrk envirnment. Demnstrate career search skills including preparing a résumé and cver letter, cnducting Skype interviews, netwrking and using scial media tls such as LinkedIn t create a prfessinal netwrk. Describe and analyze cultural differences in the wrkplace based n critical incidents. Demnstrate ability t analyze persnal prfessinal strengths and weaknesses.
2 Demnstrate knwledge and skills required t wrk n crss-cultural teams. Synthesize the experiences f the internship placement in a revised résumé. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Regular attendance in the internship seminar is mandatry. Fr every absence, 3 percentage pints will be deducted frm the final grade. Mre than 4 absences will result in an administrative review that may lead t a failing grade, inability t cntinue with the internship placement, and/r dismissal frm the prgram. Attendance at the last seminar meeting is critical t helping yu translate yur internship experience int yur jb search preparatin. Students wh miss the final seminar meeting will receive a failing grade fr the curse. Yu must submit résumés electrnically t the Internship Crdinatr. The Internship Crdinatr will prvide feedback n yur résumé and will als arrange fr a practice Skype interview with IES staff. Once the résumé and interview caching have been cmpleted, the Internship Crdinatr will match yu with a pssible hst rganizatin and arrange a Skype r telephne interview. When yu and the hst rganizatin agree t the match, bth parties sign an agreement detailing the prject(s) t be cmpleted. During the internship, yu will have a supervisr n site at the hst rganizatin. Yu will submit weekly status reprts t yur supervisr and t the Internship Crdinatr. The Internship Crdinatr will check in with yu regularly and shuld be cntacted immediately if any issues arise at the placement site. Yu are expected t reprt t wrk n time and t be prfessinally dressed every day yu are scheduled t wrk. Yu may nt ask emplyers t change yur schedule r t leave wrk early unless prir permissin is received frm the IES Internship Crdinatr. If yu cannt reprt t wrk due t illness, yu shuld ntify yur supervisr and the IES Internship Crdinatr immediately. Unexcused absences, extended breaks r lunch hurs and leaving the wrk site early are all causes fr Administrative Review, as stipulated in IES Abrad Student Plicies. Each grup will be given a jint task t culturally analyze their wrkplaces and their internship city and ther lcatins they visit during the summer grups will reprt back in the subsequent shared 3-Credit and 6-Credit Sessin n Lessns Learned. Yu shuld keep in mind that yur experiences in a given internship may nt necessarily be indicative f the natinal culture. In sme Centers, grups will be paired with grups in ther internship lcatins t participate in a crsscenter cultural analysis assignment.
