13 Subject-Based Banding (SBB) WHAT IS SUBJECT-BASED BANDING? Subject-based Banding provides greater flexibility for the student by offering him the option of combination of standard and foundation subjects, depending on his strengths. This allows the student to focus on and stretch his potential in the subjects that he is strong in while building up the fundamentals in the subjects that he needs more support in.

14 Subject-Based Banding (SBB) WHY INTRODUCE SUBJECT-BASED BANDING? To recognise the different abilities of students and give them greater flexibility to concentrate on the subjects they are good at. To encourage more interaction among students with different strengths.

15 At P4 School recommends a subject combination based on the students results. Parents fill up an option form indicating preferred combination. At P5 Your child takes subject combination chosen by parents. English, Math, Science and Mother Tongue are available at standard and foundation levels. Mother Tongue is also available at the higher level.

16 End of P5 Take 1 or more foundation subject(s) and does very well in the subject(s) School may allow him to upgrade 1 or 2 subjects to standard level if school believes he can cope; or continue the same subject combination in P6 At P6 Takes standard subjects and has difficulty coping School may allow him to take 1 or more subjects at foundation level in P6 All other children School will allow them the same subject combination in P6 Your child takes subject combination decided by school.

17 Structure of Assessment The assessment plan for Pri. 4 is as follow: No CA1 and CA2

18 Important Notes on Assessment Be punctual for all school assessments. The school will decide, on a case-bycase basis, whether a latecomer is granted extra time or even allowed to sit for the paper he/she is late for.

20 Important Notes on Assessment There will be NO make-up assessment for alternative assessments, bite-sized assessments and SA1 for all the subjects.

28 Information on Result Slip Percentile Rank Percentage of scores in its frequency distribution that are lower than it. If a child is in BD1 (91 to 100 percentile), it means that he has performed better than 91% of his peers in that subject.

29 Information on Result Slip Percentile Rank Instead of giving discreet percentile values, the school put the percentile ranking in bands, for e.g. Band 1 (BD1) for 91% to 100% Band 2 (BD2) for 81% to 90% Band 3 (BD3) for 71% to 80%

30 Standard Deviation (SD) - Shows how much variation exists from the average or mean value. A low SD indicates that the students test scores tend to be very close to the mean whereas high SD indicates otherwise.

31 Parent Support Time Management Help your child draw up a time-table for their week s work. Sunday night is perfect for them to sit down and plan for the following week. Allow time for each subject, giving more time to their weaker subjects. Be realistic; know how much they can do. It is important to give time for relaxation and exercise.

32 Parent Support Parents can support your child by helping them to develop good study habits. To study effectively means to put in less time and get better results. Parents can support your child by listening to them and pay more attention to their emotional needs.
