Syllabus for MAC 1105, COLLEGE ALGEBRA Tallahassee Community College Instructor: Professor John J. Salak Term: Summer 2016 Class Reference Number: WEB/ONLINE CLASS You can take MAC 1105 if you have received the correct score in the prerequisite course, MAT 1033, a C or better. You can also qualify to take this course by making an appropriate placement score on an acceptable test as well as the ACT or SAT. If you are in doubt if you qualify for this course, or if this is the correct course for your program, please check with a full time TCC adviser. You need to take MAC 1105 if you are taking an AS program which requires it, or if you are planning to take STA2122, MAC2233, MAC1114, or MAC2140. You will need a score of C or better in this course to proceed to any of those courses. This class requires a graphing calculator, I recommend a TI- 84. A graphing calculator is needed during the unit tests, final exam, and online homework, as well as during class time. You cannot use cell phones, ipads, or other such devices as graphing calculators, you must purchase a graphing calculator. No sharing of calculators during tests or the final exam, please do not forget to bring it on class day and test and exam day, this is a crucial tool in MAC My grading scale is standard tens scale, A B C D and others F. You will be given three unit tests and a cumulative final exam, each is worth 20 percent of the grade. You will be using an online homework system referred to as MOM ( My Open Math) and that online homework grade will count as 20 percent of your final grade. Make sure to adhere to the deadlines on MOM for due dates, I do not alter those or extend them. I do not give make up tests. If you miss a test for any reason, you receive a zero. At the end of the semester, your final exam will count twice, once to replace your zero and once as the final exam grade. In other words, your final exam will count 40 percent of your grade to compensate for you missing one test. If you miss a second test or third test, those are permanent zeros and cannot be removed! I would suggest you drop my course if you miss two tests, that s too many to succeed. Also, if you miss the final exam, you receive an automatic F in the course regardless of previous average, so do not miss it please! Please do not write to me to ask for make up tests, that shows you have not read my syllabus, I will simply refer you to the syllabus if you write to me with such a request. I do not withdraw students from my course, if you decide to drop my class, it is an online process which you are responsible to complete. The deadline to withdraw from my course is June 22, DO NOT MISS THIS IF YOU PLAN TO DROP.
My class uses an online LMS ( Learning Management System) called MOM, My Open Math. It is FREE and there is no cost for you to register and nothing for you to buy from the book store. My MAC 1105 classes do NOT use MML ( My Math Lab), if you purchased it from the book store do not open it and take it back! MOM which we do use is totally free to the user. My class does not have a textbook to purchase either. I have given you access to FREE online textbooks and videos to use to help you learn the material in addition to my lectures and online videos I have created. DO NOT PURCHASE a textbook from the book store. I suggest using the Learning Commons (attached to the library) for extra help and access to computers if you do not have access at home. You can view the TCC website to view their hours of operation and other services. I have created many You Tube Videos which I personally filmed to help you through this course. I have two sites, please visit them and use them to help in addition to coming to class. The links are listed below and will also be given in MOM. Lecture videos: Test and exam review videos: On Canvas at the beginning of the term you found a list of available test dates for test one, two, three, and the final exam. All tests are taken in FPAC208 on the days I have given as options, NO OTHER DATES WILL BE ALLOWED. I also do not give make up tests, don t miss a test date. You can always call the TCC Testing Center at to check their policies and hours of operation. Make sure to arrive at the testing center at least ONE hour prior to their listed closing time, that would be the last time they will hand out a test for the day. If you miss a test because you did not pay attention to this fact, NO MAKE UP TESTS ARE GIVEN, so pay attention to your arrival time and their hours of operation, that is your responsibility, not mine. My office is located in room SM212 and my phone number is My address is salakj@tcc.fl.edu. After the semester begins, I will send you an at your TCC address with my office hours and other ways to reach me. Welcome to my class, and register for MOM on the first day of class please and get started with homework. The online homework is 20 percent of the grade and you need to stay current by being on top of it. The due dates are clearly written on MOM and I do not give extensions on homework. If you need a computer and internet and do not have that at home, go to the Learning Commons or library. Here are the directions on how to register for My Open Math.
FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS IF YOU HAVE USED MOM BEFORE FOR A DIFFERENT CLASS. If you have used My Open Math before for a different class, you simply sign on to MOM like you did the previous semester. As soon as you sign on, you will see a button that says ENROLL IN A NEW COURSE. Click on that button and type in the information for my class. Course ID: Enrollment Key: salaktcc IF YOU ARE A BRAND NEW USED TO MY OPEN MATH, THEN FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS. 1. Go to the site 2. Look on the home page, and you will see a blue box on the right side of the screen. 3. Click on the hot link which states REGISTER AS A NEW STUDENT. 4. Fill in all of the information requested and write down your username and password to not forget it please. 5. Click on the box that says you agree to the terms of the software. 6. Enter the course ID. For our course, it is The ENROLLMENT KEY for our course is salaktcc 8. Click SIGN UP and you have registered for MOM and are ready to start the entire course, homework and all the useful things MOM provides. 9. This is pretty easy and free, go for it and get busy. If you would like a list of Learning Outcomes from this course, please me and I will provide you with those items. If you want a clear description of the course, refer to the college catalog. Welcome to my course, do not procrastinate and do not fall behind on homework. Create a schedule for yourself and stick to it, this is not a class for the faint of heart, it has tough material and moves quickly. If you need MAC 1105 for your major, you will have to work harder than you did in your prerequisite course, this is tougher material and takes more time to learn! If you are not good at math, perhaps you should consider a major which does not require MAC 1105 and in that case, take the two liberal arts mathematics courses to satisfy the mathematics requirement of the AA degree. This is a web class and therefore never meets, I never see you face to face. However, there are many resources on MOM, and also, please check your TCC on a daily basis, I do not through Canvas, I use TCC . You should check that daily for any changes or announcements. Thank you.
Your tests are taken in room FPAC208 on the TCC campus, always bring a photo ID, your graphing calculator, and pencils. This is true for all people living close to TCC. What happens if you do not live in Tallahassee and need to take tests from a proctor in a different city or country? If you need to take your tests in a different city or country, on the very first day of the semester you should contact Brian M. in the testing center. You can reach him by calling him at You can also him at michalob@tcc.fl.edu. In the subject line let him know you are in my 1105 WEB class and need to establish an off site proctor. I do NOT get involved in this, I am not a testing specialist and this is also not my job. Please do not write to me about any of this, direct your questions to Brian at all stages of the semester. I do NOT handle off site testing! Please remember that Brian will need a reasonable amount of time to set up a proctor for you, and also remember there will more than likely be a cost for each test you get proctored. This course has three unit tests and one cumulative final exam. My tests are paper and pencil tests, NOT on the computer, therefore a service like PROCTOR U is not even possible to use with my course. I suggest contacting Brian on the first day of the semester so he can get the ball rolling. You don t want to miss the first test because you have delayed reaching him! Testing Policies and Procedures for my WEB MAC 1105 class 1. I do not give make up tests for any reason. If you miss a test, your final exam grade will count in the place of the zero from the missed test. This can only happen once per semester, if you miss a second test, that grade will be a permanent zero. I also do not move test dates, they are FIRM. Your tests are taken in room FPAC208 on our campus. This is our testing center. I will give you a choice of dates on which you can choose to take each test and the final exam, they are published on Canvas. You will go to the testing center to take the tests and the final exam. Make sure to bring your photo ID, graphing calculator, and pencils. Also, to take a test, you must arrive at least ONE hour prior to their closing time, they will not give you the test otherwise and if you miss it because you did not check the hours, you could end up receiving a zero on a test that would be your fault. 2. I want to emphasize that I do not give make up tests, PERIOD, I do not change test dates either. Please do not try to send me a doctor note or anything like that, it does not change my syllabus or policy. If you miss a test, read item #1 above. If you miss the final exam, you receive an automatic F in the class regardless of your previous average. 3. The phone number for the testing center is You should call this number and write down the information they provide in their message, for example, the hours of operation on a certain day. You are not allowed to use notes, scratch paper, books, or any device which connects to the internet during the test or exam. You need to use a graphing calculator.
4. As a bonus of taking a WEB class, I allow you as much time as you want on a test, I tell the testing center to give you unlimited time for a test. This does not mean that if you arrive just before they close you will get more time, no. This does mean if you time it right and get there early in the day, and the test takes you a few hours, I allow you to sit there and not rush. You cannot start and stop a test, once you arrive at the testing center, be prepared to stay there and finish the test, once you turn it in you cannot get it back at a later time to continue. 5. Once you take a test, it eventually comes back to me and I grade it and post the grades on MOM. This process could take a while, sometimes more than 7 days, so do not panic if you do not see your grade posted immediately, it is a process to get the tests back to me, it is not immediate, ok? If you take your tests off campus, it could be even up to TWO WEEKS before you see your grade posted. Welcome to my WEB 1105 course, and please make sure you understand this syllabus is a contract and I do not change rules for one individual person. The biggest challenge for any WEB class is a student who falls behind. In MAC 1105 it is virtually impossible to catch up if you allow yourself to fall behind, so there is a simple solution. DO NOT FALL BEHIND, start this course on May 5, 2016, and never let one day go by without watching videos and working homework online and preparing for tests one, two, three, and the final exam. You are in a 10 week summer course and it flies, you do not have time to take off days, each day requires work toward this class. I do not change the MOM deadline dates for online homework, and there is a great deal of homework and it is not simple. You must stay on top of things in order to succeed in a web based MAC 1105 course. You can do this, CREATE A DAY BY DAY SCHEDULE for yourself in order to succeed please. I want you to do well, be your own advocate and your own best friend by choosing the correct habits to use to succeed in my class. Welcome, and have a great summer semester. Professor Salak
