IOC = 8 minutes with 2 minutes fllw-up questins AND a 10 minute discussin f anther wrk 45% Written Exam External Assessment Tw Papers: Paper 1: Cmmentary n unseen passage f petry r prse (20%) Paper 2: Essay n at least 2 f the Part III: Literary Genres wrks (25%) 2 REQUIREMENTS OF THE IB EXAM ASSESSMENTS FOR YEAR 1 Further specific detail f the assessment cmpnents during the secnd year f the curse will be given next year by the instructr f that sectin f the IB English curse. EXAMINATION 1, SEMESTER 1: THE INDIVIDUAL ORAL PRESENTATION (IOP) Weight: 15% f the verall IB English Examinatin Scre Duratin: minutes The individual ral presentatin is based n a wrk r wrks studied in part 4 f the syllabus. Each student chses a tpic fr this exercise in cnsultatin with the teacher. Chice f tpic Students shuld chse tpics that reflect their persnal interests. Tpics may be based n any aspect(s) f the wrk(s) studied, including: the cultural setting f the wrk(s) and related issues thematic fcus characterizatin techniques and style the authr s attitude t particular elements f the wrks (fr example, character(s), subject matter) the interpretatin f particular elements frm different perspectives. Fcus f the individual ral presentatin The fcus f each ral presentatin will depend n the nature and scpe f the tpic chsen. Whatever the tpic and type f presentatin chsen, students will be expected t shw: knwledge and understanding f the wrks thrugh appreciatin f the aspect discussed gd use f strategies t engage an audience

2 delivery f the presentatin in a manner that is apprpriate t the task. Structure f the individual ral presentatin The structure f each ral presentatin depends largely n the type f activity selected fr the tpic. It is the respnsibility f the student t select the type f presentatin that mst effectively enables the bjectives f the tpic t be realized. Whatever the activity chsen, all presentatins must have a cherent structure. Preparatin fr the individual ral presentatin It is expected that students will prepare fr their presentatin utside class hurs. When students have chsen the tpic fr their presentatin it will be their respnsibility t: select apprpriate material fr the presentatin rganize the material int a cherent structure chse a means f presentatin and delivery that is suited t the activity and tpic. Suggested activities The fllwing list applies t all the ptins studied in part 4 f the curse and cntains examples f the wide range f activities that are acceptable fr the individual ral presentatin. This list is neither exhaustive nr prescriptive. The examples are nly suggestins and may be added t by teachers, r by students with the apprval f teachers. Students shuld select the activity mst apprpriate t the tpic chsen. The individual presentatin may be dne in a pair r as part f a small grup f students. In that case, each student must give an individual presentatin minutes in length that can be individually assessed by the teacher. A critique f the student s wn writing that has been prduced in the style f ne f the literary genres studied An explanatin f a particular aspect f an authr s wrk The examinatin f a particular interpretatin f a wrk The setting f a particular writer s wrk against anther bdy f material, fr example, details n scial backgrund r plitical views A cmmentary n the use f a particular image, idea r symbl in ne text r in a writer s wrk A perfrmance r a pastiche f a pem being studied this activity shuld be fllwed by sme explanatin and discussin f what the student attempted t d A cmparisn f tw passages, tw characters r tw wrks A cmmentary n a passage frm a wrk studied in class, which has been prepared at hme An accunt f the student s develping respnse t a wrk The presentatin f tw ppsing readings f a wrk A mnlgue r dialgue by a character at an imprtant pint in the wrk Reminiscences by a character frm a pint in later life An authr s reactin t a particular interpretatin f elements f his r her wrk in a given cntext (fr example, a critical defense f the wrk against a charge f subversin, r immrality, befre a censrship bard) Please nte that students wh chse creative presentatins shuld prvide a ratinale fr what they have dne. Cnduct f the presentatin and subsequent discussin Teachers must allw students t d their presentatin withut any interruptin r assistance. When the presentatin is cmpleted teachers may engage in a discussin with students in rder t prbe further int their knwledge and understanding f the wrk(s) r tpic. Teachers shuld be satisfied that students have justified their selectin f: the material used in the presentatin the activity chsen t cnvey the tpic the suitability f the style f presentatin. The whle class may participate in the subsequent discussin. The student is, hwever, nly assessed n the presentatin (which includes the ratinale where apprpriate).

Each student shuld be respnsible fr initiating sme part f the discussin in at least ne f the interactive rals fr ne wrk. Students may participate as a grup r individually, and teachers may rganize the discussin in a variety f different ways. The discussins shuld address the fllwing cultural and cntextual cnsideratins. In what ways d time and place matter t this wrk? What was easy t understand and what was difficult in relatin t scial and cultural cntext and issues? What cnnectins did yu find between issues in the wrk and yur wn culture(s) and experience? What aspects f technique are interesting in the wrk? Frmal requirements At least ne ral must be cmpleted in relatin t each wrk studied in part 1. The suggested minimum time fr discussin f each wrk is 30 minutes. Stage 2: The reflective statement The reflective statement is a shrt writing exercise and shuld be cmpleted as sn as pssible fllwing the interactive ral. Each student is asked t prvide a reflectin n each f the interactive rals. The reflective statement n the same wrk as the student s final assignment is submitted fr assessment. The reflective statement must be based n the fllwing questin. Hw was yur understanding f cultural and cntextual cnsideratins f the wrk develped thrugh the interactive ral? Frmal requirements Length wrds. If the limit is exceeded, assessment will be based n the first 400 wrds. The reflective statement abut the wrk used in the student s final assignment (essay) is Submissin submitted tgether with the assignment. Assessment The reflective statement is awarded a mark ut f 3 using assessment criterin A. Administratin All reflective statements must be kept n file at the schl. Stage 3: Develping the tpic supervised writing Supervised writing is intended as a springbard t elicit ideas frm the student. Frm these ideas the student develps a tpic and the final essay. The ultimate gal f this stage f the prcess is t help students t prduce gd essays with apprpriate tpics. T this end students are required t respnd t each f the wrks studied in a written exercise undertaken during class time. Fr each wrk studied (tw at SL, three at HL) ne piece f writing prduced during class time is required. The recmmended time fr each piece f writing is minutes and the writing must be in cntinuus prse. At the end f the lessn the writing must be handed t the teacher and an unedited cpy kept n file until the end f the examinatin sessin. Teachers need t prvide three r fur prmpts fr each wrk studied. There must be n pprtunity fr students t prepare befrehand, s it is essential that students are nt given the prmpts prir t the lessn. The aim f the prmpts is t encurage independent critical writing and t stimulate thinking abut an assignment tpic. The prmpts may be selected frm the list belw, frm thse given in the teacher supprt material, r teachers may devise their wn. The students will chse ne f their pieces f supervised writing and develp that int the essay required fr submissin. There must be an apparent cnnectin between the supervised writing and the final essay, but students are encuraged t prvide their wn title and t develp the chsen prmpt in an independent

4 directin. Belw is an example f a prmpt fr the supervised writing, shwing hw that prmpt culd be applied t a specific wrk and develped int a suitable essay title. Albert Camus's The Plague brilliantly frames the philsphy f the Absurd, f which Camus was a majr cntributr. Develp an essay that analyzes hw absurdity is manifest Prmpt in the nvel. Cnsider hw the develpment f literary effects such as irny devices helps t cnvey absurdist themes. Integrate significant qutes frm the nvel t supprt yur analysis. Avid mere plt summary. Wrk The Plague by Albert Camus Essay title The Plague: An Absurd Little Illness Frmal requirements Length Submissin Assessment Administratin There is n specified length. The riginal piece f supervised writing is nt submitted. Supervised writing is nt awarded a mark but may be used t authenticate the individuality f a student s wrk. The task is pen bk and students shuld have access t the literary wrks being used fr the writing. Anntatins are acceptable, but students shuld nt have access t secndary material. All pieces f supervised writing must be kept n file at the schl. Stage 4: Prductin f the essay Each student is required t prduce an essay f 1,200 1,500 wrds in length n a literary aspect f ne wrk. The essay is develped frm ne f the pieces f supervised writing cmpleted in class, with the guidance f the teacher. The rle f the teacher Prvide guidance n the develpment f the essay tpic. Discuss the cnnectins between the supervised writing and the essay. Ensure that the tpic is suitable t the length and the fcus f the task. Read the first draft f the essay and prvide feedback t the student. This may take the frm f a cnversatin and/r a written respnse n a piece f paper separate frm the draft essay. Cmpletin f the essay fr submissin by the student After receiving feedback n the first draft, the student must cmplete the written assignment withut further assistance. Nte: The assignment must be the independent wrk f the student. Statements n the cversheet declaring that the assignment is the independent wrk f the student must be signed by the student and by the supervising teacher. Frmal requirements Length 1,200 1,500 wrds. If the limit is exceeded, assessment will be based n the first 1,500 wrds. Submissin The final essay is submitted fr assessment alng with the relevant reflective statement. The essay shuld be a well-presented, frmal piece f wrk. Assessment The final essay is awarded a mark ut f 22 using assessment criteria B, C, D and E. Administratin The relevant reflective statement must be submitted with the final essay.

5 3 FORMAL COMPOSITIONS DURING HL IB YEAR 1: These pieces are essays that will underg the writing prcess all the way t the cmpletin f a publishable quality essay meeting the standards f a cllege-level cmpsitin curse. These cmpsitins are lng term assignments with a peerrevisin and draft cmpnent t be submitted fr credit. There are fur (4) frmal cmpsitins fr this curse, ne f which the IB IOP assessment is nn-print based They are as fllws with a basic summary f the prmpt r its gals/bjectives: 1. Analysis Essay This essay will be a literary analysis essay f ne f the Haruki Murakami shrt stries frm his shrt stry cllectin, Blind Willw, Sleeping Wman, that students chse t read and anntate fr the summer assignment. Students will cmpse a direct analysis f that stry cmplete with an analytical-style thesis statement, as examined in class. This essay will be 3 pages minimum 4 pages maximum in length, typed, with MLA frmatting and citatins. 2. Narrative Writing This assignment fcuses n practicing the art f writing the perfect narrative respnse in regards t a cllege applicatin persnal writing prmpt. Students will cmpse a persnal narrative respnse t a prmpt f chice supplied by varius U.S. universities and clleges. Subject t wrd cunt as required by each specific essay prmpt per cllege/university. 3. Argumentative Essay Students will cmpse an argumentative essay in respnse t a film critic in regards t the film, Bicycle Thieves, by Vittri de Sica. This This essay will be 3 pages minimum 4 pages maximum in length, typed, with MLA frmatting and citatins. 4. Shrt Fictin Narrative Writing Open t creativity, but based n theretical principles f fictin writing as studied during the shrt-stry mini-unit students will be engaging with n their wn time during the IOP presentatin in December, and thrugh the hliday break Reflective Statements in Preparatin fr the IB Written Assignment - See Descriptin f the HL IB English A: Literature Assessment Overview fr Year 1 fr further details and requirements. 6. IB Written Assignment, the Wrks-in-Translatin (WIT) Essay See Descriptin f the HL IB English A: Literature Assessment Overview fr Year 1 fr further details and requirements. 4 Supervised Timed Writings On-Demand Writing In ttal, there will be five (5) supervised timed writing assessments. The tw (2) supervised timed writing fr the first semester will prepare students fr the Paper 1 Cmmentary IB examinatin that they will take during their senir year. These supervised writings will adhere t the requirements f this IB examinatin n which students will analyze an unseen passage f prse r petry thrugh a written analytical respnse within 50 minutes time. Students will demnstrate their skills in deciphering an authr s purpse thrugh the authr s use f theme, tne, metaphr, syntactical and structural style, wrd chice, rhetrical devices.. The three (3) supervised timed writings during the secnd semester will be similar t the supervised writings frm the first semester in structure, but the purpse fr the secnd semester supervised writings are different. During the secnd semester, the supervised writing is intended as a springbard t elicit ideas frm the student. Frm these ideas the student develps a tpic and the final essay. The ultimate gal f this stage f the prcess is t help students t prduce gd essays with apprpriate tpics. T this end students will chse ne f their pieces f supervised writing and develp that int the essay required fr submissin. There must be an apparent cnnectin between the supervised writing and the final essay, but students are encuraged t prvide their wn title and t develp the chsen prmpt in an independent directin. Specific prmpts have yet t be determined because student interest and creativity will be influential factrs in determining these specifics. Hwever, the gals and bjectives f prjects and presentatins will be t prepare students fr the IB Independent Oral Presentatin (IOP), which takes place at the end f the first semester. They will als prepare students fr the Interactive Oral Presentatin cmpnents f the Written Essay IB examinatin during the secnd semester. Therefre, please refer t the infrmatin regarding the IOC, and the Interactive Oral Presentatin, cmpnents f the IB curse examinatin fr infrmatin regarding the ratinale, gals, and bjectives f all prjects and presentatins, especially thse students will engage in during the first part f the schl year.
