3 Ice Breaker WELCOME!!! Find a seat Choose a piece of candy Complete the following activity Using your candy of choice, describe your teaching journey thus far. Use the following model to assist This year has been like Peppermint Pattie. I start each day feeling sweet and refreshed, only to be blown away by 3 rd period, ending each day with a strange sensation.
4 Essential Question What is the importance of utilizing literacy strategies with English Learners? Think about it What successes are you currently experiencing with your English Learners? What challenges are you currently experiencing with your English Learners?
5 Goals and Outcomes By the end of this session, teachers will: KNOW Vocabulary related to English Learners Characteristics of strong literacy strategies for English Learners UNDERSTAND Importance of incorporating strategies into instruction for English Learners Value of creating lesson plans that provide opportunities for differentiation Need for literacy strategies when working with English Learners DO Participate in group discussions Participate in station rotations Identify new information & strategies learned today
6 Norms and Expectations Please refrain from side-bar conversations. Cell-phones should be off. Please be professional in your comments and actions to your peers. Relax, enjoy and be open to new ideas.
7 LINK Activity Fill out the first column of the LINK worksheet. As we go throughout the day, jot down anything new that you learn concerning English Learners.
8 Video Discussion Watch the following video. Take as many notes as you possibly can on the information being presented. Afterwards, we will discuss what you ve learned.
9 Work Station Rotation (8 min) On the front of your journals are colored dots. Your dot color will indicate your group and where you begin rotations. Find your color posted next to your station. For example, if your dot is blue, that will be your 1 st table to begin your rotations. There are directions at each rotation. Team leaders were randomly chosen. * They are in charge of reading the directions and guiding the activity. Participants will rotate through the stations every 8 minutes. Please use your LINK sheet for note-taking.
10 Work Station #1 Marzano s Nine High Yield Instructional Strategies Read over the instructional strategies and how research supports its importance in your classroom. Using the 9 cards, pair the missing examples and discuss how this strategy would look in your classroom.
11 Work Station #2 Watch 7 minutes of the video Danger of a Single Story. In your journal, jot down your reactions to the video. Be sure to answer this question: How can you avoid the single story in your classroom?
12 Work Station #3 Read Tips & Recommendations for working with ELL s. After reading, you will use the say something strategy to respond in your journal. Using this strategy you will ask a question, clarify something you misunderstood, make a comment, make a connection, or write something you found important. Share with your group.
13 Work Station #4 Literature Circles- 1 st - Select your role & read the description 2 nd - Read the article: Do s & Don'ts For Teaching English Language Learners by Larry Ferlazzo. **Be sure to utilize your Literature Circle roles while reading and discussing the article.
14 Work Station #5 Swat-A-Word Separate into two teams. A team member from each group will grab a fly swatter, and go to the board. A definition will be called out, and the first team member to swat the word first will win. After one complete rotation, discuss how you could use this in your classroom.
15 Debrief Time Let s See What You ve Learned Give One, Get One, Move On Take a sheet of paper and draw a 3x3 grid.
16 Wrap-Up / Ticket Out the Door How to Play: Using the grid, 1 st, write down 3 things you learned today. 2 nd, walk around the room to gather at least 3 new ideas from 3 different people. Continue this until your grid is full.
