2 The second grade curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) provided by the state. We also use the grade level guidelines that Katy ISD has developed based on the TEKS. Reading - Katy ISD uses the balanced literacy approach. Reading and comprehension strategies are taught through read-alouds, shared reading, independent reading, and guided reading. Much emphasis is placed on guided reading as students are placed in groups for small group instruction where the teacher can better meet each student s individual needs. Students also practice their strategies through literacy workstations. Reading is incorporated into every subject area, with an emphasis in science. Language/Writing Students will learn how to write complete sentences, identify and write the three types of sentences, identify and correctly use nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and learn how to punctuate and capitalize correctly. Writing is incorporated in all subjects. Word Work Explicit instruction on the pattern of English spelling. Students are taught how to use letter patterns to actually decode and spell new words when they are reading and writing. Math KatyISD uses the Guided Math approach. Just like our reading, math instruction will be incorporated into small groups. The skills the students will be learning are adding and subtracting one, two and three digit numbers, counting money, telling time, introducing multiplication and division readiness activities, making and reading graphs, measuring by using different methods, demonstrating and writing fractions, and identifying two and three dimensional shapes. Please note that much of our math time is spent building concepts with manipulatives, practicing on dry-erase boards, and/or playing games that strengthen the concept before a paper and pencil assignment is given. Students are expected to memorize their addition and subtraction facts up to twenty.

3 Science The science program will be taught everyday. Your child will learn both scientific concepts and processes. We will be performing experiments to better understand and extend what we are studying. Some of what goes on in the classroom will not come home on paper, but ask your child and he/she should be able to share with you. Also, health will be incorporated into our science time. Your child will be getting information regarding safety in and out of the classroom, hygiene, staying healthy, and nutrition. Social Studies Students are taught map skills, geography, historical information about individuals, and about our government, state, and community. Handwriting The students will be taught how to write letters using the modern manuscript formation. The students will practice letter formation on lined. Emphasis will be placed on mechanics, formation, slant, spacing, alignment, and creation of a neat product. Students will be introduced to cursive writing towards the end of the school year. Extended Learning-This is a time of the day when the students are participating in enrichment or tutorial activities. Some of the activities include listening and following directions, educational games, author studies, and critical thinking. During this time, teachers are able to work in small groups or oneon-one with students having difficulty with any core subjects. Some students may attend speech, ESL, or academic programs as needed during this time. Technology - The students are taught Keyboarding in second grade. We will be teaching the students the home row keys and various parts of the computer. The learning of terms such as file, open, save, delete, format, disk, and knowledge of computer parts will enhance their usage of this great learning tool. Technology plays a major role in every subject area. It will be incorporated into daily lessons and will be used weekly by the students individually in the computer lab.

4 Communication Folder: This folder will come home every night. This is our main form of communication with you. It will contain your child s homework and expectation card and also various notes and items of interest for you to read. Graded work will go home on Tuesday. Please go over the graded papers with your child. Praise your child for his/her success and help your child with any areas in which he/she may need more practice. Expectation Card: Everyday your child will bring home an expectation card indicating your child s behavior. This card must be initialed by the parent and sent back with the child daily. The marks on this card will be used to determine conduct grades for the report card. After the first semester if your child has no received any mark, they will be a self manager and not receive a card. Once a student receives three marks they will be placed back on an expectation card. Student Planner: Your child will be responsible for writing down any assignments that he/she has to do that evening in his/her student planner. Please look over your child s student planner and assignments and initial. Planners can be purchased at the front office for $3.00 each.

5 McRoberts Expectations KISD Safety Net Everyday your child will bring home an expectation card that needs to be initialed by a parent and returned the next day. This is to ensure daily communication between the parents and the teachers. (If a student loses his/her expectation card, he/she will receive a U on his/her report card). Classroom expectations are enforced to ensure the best learning environment for all the students. Students are rewarded for appropriate behavior in numerous ways. We appreciate your support in this area. We are a Love and Logic campus. KISD Safety Net : Special cards are provided for your students and/or you to fill out when your child sees or is aware of situations that might be unsafe. These cards are placed in a box either in the front office or by the counselor s office. The principals and/or counselor will communicate with you/your child about the situation.

6 McRoberts Parent/Teacher/Student Compact: Each child will be given a contract to sign, along with teachers and parents, in regard to working together for the success of the child. Birthdays: Due to KISD requirements, birthday invitations may not be distributed at school. Teachers will not be able to provide a birthday list. Birthday Treats: Birthday treats are only allowed to be given at recess and must be dropped off at the front office. Please no balloons or individual goodie bags. NO PEANUTS! Book Orders: Book orders may be sent home once a month. Please pay by check made payable to the book company. No cash will be accepted. No Toys: Toys are not allowed at school unless specifically requested in writing by the classroom teacher. No footballs are allowed in school or at recess. If any other kind of ball comes to school (basketball or soccer), it must be left at school for the entire school year. Dress Code: All students shirts must be tucked in if they hang below the back pocket of their pants or outfit. No short shorts OR spaghetti strap tank tops. Please dress appropriately. Security Procedures: No students are released to any adult directly from the classroom-only through the school office. Parents in the building at 3:15 must report to the front office during dismissal time. Any parents visiting the school must sign in at the office and MUST have an ID. Everyone on campus must wear a nametag. o Arrival Students will not be able to enter the building prior to 7:50am. Recess: Teachers may partner up with another teacher so that one teacher may take students outside while the other teacher stays inside to monitor students who need to finish work or need to be inside for health reasons. Binders are not allowed in second grade. They are very large and take up too much room in a child s desk and backpack. For safety reasons, rolling backpacks are not restricted, but they are discouraged. Tennis shoes: Tennis shoes must be worn on days that your child will be attending physical education. Home Access Center: Parents, we encourage you to sign up. This is where you can check your students grades. No parent walk-ups to get children in the afternoon are allowed. Video cameras, cameras, and video phones are allowed only at public events such as special student performances. RAPTOR: If you are new to the school, please register in the front office using your TX Drivers License. New legislation requires students to recite the pledges of allegiance to the U.S. and Texas flags at the beginning of the school day. Parents have the right to opt their child out of the pledge requirements by submitting a written request. If a student s parents have provided the school with written notice that the student is not to participate in the pledges, the student may choose to either sit or stand while the pledges are being recited. The prices of school lunches are: Elementary students: Lunch - $2.00 and breakfast $1.00 Adults: $2.85

7 Each teacher takes many grades in a grading period. Some grades are for participations and others for independent work. Actual grades reflect mastery of skills-not work habits. o A district-wide weighted grading system for grades 2-5 is used: Homework Daily Work/Tests 10% of total grade 90% to total grade, weighted as follows: Daily work-1.0 weight (entered once) Tests-2.0 weight (entered twice) Projects assigned and completed in class under the direction of the classroom teacher are to be weighted as a test grade. Projects assigned and completed as independent work to be done at home are to be weighted as a daily grade. If a student makes a 69 or below on a major assignment (2.0 weight), the teacher will reteach the skill and retest. If reassessment for mastery of the skills involves retesting, the highest grade the student receives will be a 70.

8 Polly Ann McRoberts Elementary follows the Katy ISD Grading and Reporting guidelines and children receive the grades earned. Grades lower that a 50 will no longer roll up to a 50. Ten points will be deducted for assignments that are turned in late. Each child is given sufficient time to complete his/her work and it is up to the individual teacher to determine length of time necessary. After three days, the child is given a 50. When students are assigned independent work that includes a word bank, they will be expected to spell these words correctly. If the words are not spelled correctly, points will be deducted. Homework: In second grade, homework is graded. If the homework is not turned in, he/she will receive a zero for the homework assignment and it will be noted on the expectation card.
