5 Point of View Mini Lesson 1 Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI3.6 Distinguish their own point of view from that of the author of a text. Compare it to their prior knowledge of fictional point of view. Step 2- Students will work with partners to read a task card. They will decide the point of view for each paragraph. They will write the 4 points of view on one Post-it note, then compare with another set of students. Step 3- Students will practice writing their own point of view with paragraphs on certain topics. Have them mix-pair-share for each topic to read their paragraph to a partner. They will look for another student with an opposing opinion. 6 [Point of View] Lesson Plan Step 1- Introduce and discuss point of view. Step 2- Partners will read task cards and write the 4 points of view on a Post-it note. Step 3- Students will write their point of view on topics, then compare them with others.

7 Point of View -Point of view tells us how the author feels about the topic. -Informational texts sometimes have opinions within them. This is the author s point of view. -Sometimes, it may be different from your own. What would your point of view be if you wrote an article about video games?

8 Wearing sunscreen keeps your skin healthy and protected. There are SPF levels in the cream or spray. This is what prevents the sun rays from damaging your skin. You should put a new layer of sunscreen on your skin every 80 minutes. Basketball is the best sport to play. It is a lot of fun because you get to run, which gives you great exercise. You also get to shoot a large ball into a net to try and score points. It s better than using your feet to play sports. Kids should get outside and play. Watching T.V. and playing video games might make kids too lazy. They need at least one hour of exercise per day. Running and playing outside can help them get this exercise. Getting good sleep is very important. If you do not sleep for at least 8 hours each night, you may be tired the next day. You won t have as much energy to pay attention and get things done. Being well rested helps you in many ways.

Students will turn and talk to discuss how this point of view compares to their own. Step 2- Students will work with partners to read a task card. They will choose two of these task cards and compare their points of view to them. Step 3- Students will read an article that opposes composting and create a Venn diagram to compare points of view. 12 Children should not be allowed on social media, such as Facebook and Instagram, until they are 14 years old. Recycling is an unnecessary practice that people in America do. Running for the presidency seems like a fairly easy task. The campaign trail may be the only difficult thing. No one truly needs to buy Christmas presents for their friends and family. Gifts are unnecessary to give to friends and family. Going to school for 7 hours each day is not enough time to learn everything. School should last at least 10 hours a day.

Most people need to stay indoors to avoid the temperatures of 100 degrees or more. 3 4 Littering is the act of someone throwing their trash onto the ground. When someone litters, they need to be punished for the crime they just committed. Next time you see someone litter, make sure to let them know! 5 6 There are varying opinions on animals in captivity. Zoos are one of these tough subjects. However, what people don t know is that zoos help with animal conservation and public knowledge on taking care of these animals. Tobin, 2015 Having a natural talent for a sport is something that every child is born with. All kids need to find which sport they are good at, and then just play that sport everyday. Honesty is always the best policy. Kids need to learn responsibility at a young age. When they see a $100 bill on the sidewalk, there shouldn t be a doubt in their mind that they need to pick it up and find the owner. Getting lost is something that will certainly happen to everyone at least once in their life. This is why GPS systems are incredibly helpful for all cars and phones. This technology can help people who get lost.

15 Composting Many families have a compost pile in their backyard. This is a pile of dirt, leaves, grass, and old food that will help with the environment. However, I think that we all need to realize that while this may help the environment, it is really disgusting. Imagine that you re walking through someone s backyard to admire their beautiful new flower bed, but all of a sudden, you smell a big pile of trash. Putting a compost pile in your backyard is more disgusting than helpful. Some studies may argue differently and claim that it is truly beneficial to the earth to start a compost pile in your backyard. Would you like the idea of your friends and family looking at a pile of your old, recyclable food? Sometimes, appearance is more important than taking care of the earth.

19 Education One of the most important things someone can do is get an education. When a child is growing up, they spend a lot of time at school. Although they might want to play instead, learning is very important. They go to school to learn math, reading, writing, and more. This will help them in their future. Once they get to high school, they will begin to learn harder things. This is getting them ready for college. College is where people go to learn how to do a certain job. They are studying to get a great career, such as a doctor, lawyer, or teacher. None of these great jobs would be possible without education. This is why students need to stay in school and fill their brains with great information.

34 Name: There are many schools throughout the world that require school uniforms. A school uniform is a standard of dressing specifically for school. It is different from a dress code because a dress code restricts what students can wear. A uniform is much more specific. School uniforms can vary from school to school. Some schools require white button up shirts for boys and pleated skirts for girls. Other schools will ask that students wear collared shirts and some might require a tie. All of these uniforms are required for good reason. By taking the emphasis off of clothing, students are able to focus on their work throughout the day and not on what they are wearing. Studies have shown that student performance is higher in schools with uniforms. It also helps to eliminate any judgments based upon clothing and helps many students fit in better. Many parents are fans of school uniforms as well. Shopping for clothes can be very expensive and being able to buy less clothes helps save parents money. It also frees up more time in the morning for both parents and students. Students will not have to spend time deciding what to wear to school because it is the same each day. This way, they can focus on eating a healthy breakfast and ensuring they have completed all of their responsibilities before leaving for school. These reasons are why all schools should require students to wear a school uniform. School Uniforms

36 Name: One issue that has been growing over the past 20 years is the amount of time that kids spend in front of electronic screens on a daily basis. Many kids spend lots of their free time playing video games, watching TV, playing on a cell phone, or playing with a tablet. Each year, the amount of time kids look at electronics grows. Many adults are opposed to this amount of time and think that screen time for kids should be reduced. The increased time spent in front of electronics takes away time from other areas that kids need while they are still developing. There has been a large reduction in the amount of time that kids spend in person with friends and peers growing up. There is a great deal of social intelligence that is picked up from interacting face to face and these kids are at risk of missing out on that. This means that they may not fair as well in social situations at school or anywhere else. They may lag on their social development for years. Increased screen time also leaves less time for athletic activities. Childhood obesity in America has tripled in the last 35 years. This is largely due to children not being active and playing sports or participating in other physical activities. Staring at these screens can also strain kids eyes when it is done for long periods, leading to eye fatigue. This could cause longterm damage to kids eyesight as well. Screen Time

38 Name: The most important thing you can do for yourself in a car is to wear a seatbelt. A seatbelt is the harness that keeps you in your seat at all times when you re riding in a car. The belt typically goes over one shoulder and into a buckle then back across the lap of the seatbelt wearer. This keeps the person secure in their seat from two different points. Seatbelts are important because cars move at high rates of speed, so when something goes wrong, the person needs to be strapped in for safety reasons. If not, then someone could get thrown around inside the car or even be thrown out of the car. There are many safe drivers in the world, but even those drivers need to slam on the brakes sometimes. Car safety is tested every day by every major car manufacturers and they all agree that wearing a seatbelt is the safest thing you can do in a car to protect yourself. Wearing a seatbelt in a car is just as important as wearing a helmet when riding a bike. Seatbelts have saved countless lives by keeping people from being thrown around in a car. Wearing a seatbelt is also a law that everyone must follow. Since they help out with safety so much, every state except New Hampshire has laws that require adults to wear seatbelts. Children are required to wear seatbelts in every state. If adults do not follow these laws, officers can pull them over and give them tickets requiring them to pay fines. 40 Name: Your teeth are one of the most important things that you can keep in good shape. You need teeth for talking and eating, and everyone likes to do those things. up. Keeping up with good dental hygiene consists of a few different things. It is important to brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and use mouthwash consistently. These three things will help keep teeth and mouth in great shape. Dentists also recommend visiting them every six months to get your teeth cleaned and get a check up. It is best to avoid eating and drinking too many foods that are high in sugar, like candy and carbonated drinks with high sugar. These will lead to tooth decay if they are consumed too often. Doing what the dentist recommends helps avoid getting cavities. Cavities are small holes in your teeth that are caused by tooth decay from not brushing often enough and eating foods that are too high in sugar. If someone has cavities, they have to visit a dentist to get the small holes filled in. This can be very expensive. There are other problems that can arise from not properly taking care of teeth. Tooth decay or too much dental work can break down teeth and lead to someone having to get a root canal. These are extremely painful and even more expensive than cavities. Brushing daily will help eliminate bad breath, too. Nobody wants the pain or expense that comes with poor dental health, so everyone should follow the basics of dental hygiene. Good Dental Health

Fast food is any food that restaurants can produce in large quantities in a short period of time. It is usually cheaper than most other food and much less nutritious. The type of restaurants that serve this food often have drive-thrus as an option and people that go inside the restaurants typically order and get served at a counter. While eating fast food is cheaper than most other restaurants, people can cook at home for less than what fast food costs. So even though fast food is cheap, meals can be made for less money. The main argument for not eating fast food is how unhealthy it is for people. Fast food is very high in salt, sugar, and fat. This leads to a lot of health issues for those who eat it regularly. Increased fast food consumption has been linked to obesity and high cholesterol levels. High cholesterol for long periods of time will often lead to heart disease and can result in heart attacks or worse. Obesity leads to many health issues like heart disease, problems sleeping, arthritis, and cancer. It also increases the risks of heart attacks as well. By eating at home, people can control what goes into their food and exactly what it is. They can eat healthy and avoid many of the health issues that come from eating fast food. Cooking at home can also be relaxing and people can make food that tastes just as good as fast food.

44 Name: Camouflage is the ability to blend in with someone or something s surroundings. Many animals use camouflage, which is the best survival tactic for animals in the wild. All animals are either predators or prey and some are both. Animals that are prey spend their entire lives on high alert to avoid being eaten. Animals use many defense tactics, but camouflage is the best. Using its body to blend into an area where predators cannot see, it helps these animals survive. Some of the most commonly known animals to use camouflage are chameleons, butterflies, and snakes. Chameleons have bodies that change color constantly and make them nearly impossible to see. Their bodies shift to whatever color is right behind them. That way, they look like a part of whatever their background is. Butterflies disguise their wings with different designs and colors. The patterns that the colors and shapes form can look like dead leaves, flowers, or tree bark, depending on which butterfly it is. Snakes can use their camouflage in a few different ways. Snakes are both prey and predators. Scarlet kingsnakes have a color pattern that is very unique. They have red, white, and black stripes all over their body. They are not dangerous, but because of their color patterns, they look just like the coral snake, which is extremely dangerous. This keeps other animals away because they cannot tell the difference between the snakes. This camouflage saves their lives daily. Benefits of Camouflage
