1 Course: Math 104 SF1 Applied Regression Analysis Fall 2012 Undergraduate Programs GOLDEN GATE UNIVERSITY Joseph Almeida Telephone Number: (925) , (925) Fax Number: (888) ; Math Department Home page: Important Dates: First Day of Class: 08/30/ pm to 9.30 pm Last Day of Class: 12/06/ pm to 9.30 pm Course Description You will learn the fundamentals and advanced techniques of regression analysis and related subjects as business decision making tools: applied multiple regression and correlation analysis to forecasting (in particular, managerial interpretation of the regression equation) using a casestudy approach. So that you can apply, evaluate and test statistical data in real business situations. Prerequisite: Math 40 (Statistics) or its equivalent 2. Course Objectives To provide you with regression analysis tools in statistical analysis, in particular, statistical inference, and regression analysis. At the completion of this course, you should be able to: Understand and give interval estimation to perform hypothesis testing. Understand simple and multiple linear regression, time series forecasting and model building. Perform various statistical analysis using computer software.

Please view the readme file for PHSTAT2, to configure your computer that is also linked to the above website. We assume that you have already possessed certain level of Microsoft Excel operational skills, which are necessary to make full use of the textbook and help you understand statistical concepts. The textbook uses Microsoft Excel and its statistics packages, PHStat2, to explain computational aspects of handling data instead of manually computing data. You can also use the Computer Lab. Calculator TI - (preferred) 83 or 84 University Library Find the GGU Library Home Page at There are several databases available through the Golden Gate University Library for students to conduct research on various topics. Remote (off campus) access to the databases requires your last name and student ID# (located on the front of your ID card). Be sure to type in ALL 7 digits, including the starting 0. Example: IMPORTANT: Some course materials, e.g., solution sets and sample tests, have been created using Adobe Acrobat in PDF format, and they require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view. If you have not already installed the free Adobe Acrobat Reader in your PC, you must download it from Adobe, and install it on your computer. The Adobe Acrobat Reader will allow you to open and read PDF files used in this course. You will not be able to make changes to the files, however. For PC Users: To download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, go to and download the appropriate version. Remember the name of the folder in which you saved the file. Then use "My Computer" to find the file, double click it, and follow the installation directions on the screen. For MAC Users: To download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, go to and download the appropriate Mac OS version. Save the file on your computer. Then go to the file on your computer, double click on it, and follow the installation directions on the screen.

3 4. Course Requirements and Evaluation: Homework: Homework will be assigned each week based on concepts covered in the class and you are expected to complete it before the next class. At the beginning of each class we will discuss selected problems from the previous week s assignment. The solutions will be provided with the assignments, so that you can check your work. If you have difficulty understanding how to do a problem, even after viewing the solution, please me, or see a math tutor. You are encouraged to work together on homework assignments. Quizzes: There will be a short quiz based on the material covered in the previous class and home work assignment, beginning from the 2 nd session onwards which will be held towards the end of the class. Attendance and Punctuality Unacceptable attendance may also result in administrative withdrawal from the course. Classes start on time. If you are late or miss a lecture, it is your responsibility to obtain any assignments or handouts that were distributed during that time. Office Hours: I do not have any office hours, but I will be available before (30 mins to 45 mins) and after class and by appointment. If you have any questions, I am available by phone, fax or , and I will get back to you at my earliest. Tutoring Support: Free tutoring is available in the Math Resource center at the University Library, room 1331 of the San Francisco Campus. It is important to go to the tutors well-prepared: have your questions ready, know what concepts you need further understanding of. On-line tutoring is also available: GRADING CRITERIA: Midterm Exam #1 15% Midterm Exam #2 15% Final Exam 30% Project 15% Quizzes 15% Homework Assignment 10% For each examination, you may use two crib sheets (two-sided, letter size) which may contain information, formulas, equations, theorems, etc., that you feel are helpful, and a hand calculator. Make-up Policy: No make-up exams will be given without documented proof that you were physically unable to appear for the scheduled exam, and you must notify the instructor prior to the exam of such a circumstance. Failure to meet either one of these requirements will result in the exam being scored as a zero. Note that make-up exams, if granted, will be scheduled at the instructor s convenience.

4 Incomplete Grades: The criteria for incomplete grades are found in the Golden Gate University Catalog. No Exceptions will be granted. Withdrawals: Students can request withdraw from the course in writing to the instructor at anytime after the drop deadline has past. However, the instructor has a right to decline such a request. Further, the instructor will not withdraw a student without such a request. The following quote is from the University Bulletin. I have three Masters, M.S in Financial Engineering from GGU, M.S in Statistics from Cal State, Hayward and M.S in Mathematics from UOB, India. My past teaching experience includes colleges in India, Chabot College, Hayward, Diablo Valley College-Pleasant Hill Merritt College, Laney College in Oakland and Golden Gate University in San Francisco. In addition, I work full time for the San Francisco s City and County s Retirement system.
