5 Example annotation for discussion It was a September evening and not yet seven o clock, but the day had been a dreary one. And a dense drizzly fog lay low upon the great city. Mud-coloured clouds dropped sadly over the muddy streets. Down the Strand the lamps were but misty splotches of diffused light which threw a feeble circular glimmer upon the slimy pavement. The yellow glare from the shop-windows streamed out into the steamy, vaporous air and threw a murky shifting radiance across the crowded thoroughfare. There was, to my mind, something eerie and ghostlike in the endless procession of faces which fitted across these narrow bars of light.

Look for evidence of a clear and distinctive voice is it dramatic? ironic? sarcastic? matter of fact? emotive? How does this differ in each? How does it fit the content or topic? 8 Example annotation for discussion The result came as Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that she intended to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence at a time when Brexit negotiations are expected to be reaching a conclusion. Ms Sturgeon said she wanted a vote to be held between autumn 2018 and spring but there is speculation that Mrs May will reject the idea of the referendum being held before the Brexit process is completed. That Brexit process is set to take two years from when Mrs May invokes Article 50, which formally gives the EU notice of the UK's intention to leave. Brexit Secretary David Davis said. "We are now on the threshold of the most important negotiation for our country in a generation."

16 English Literature- How to prepare. Start with knowledge of the texts then work on essay writing skills. Reread the texts regularly Create revision cards on: Characters, themes, setting, plot, context. Learn key quotations- You need to memorise them. Practise planning exam questions- what is your interpretation? What is covered in the exams? Paper 1: Macbeth and A Christmas Carol Paper 2: An Inspector Calls, Conflict poetry and Unseen poetry

17 English Literature- How to memorise. SAY, COVER, TEST Set small targets e.g. In this session I am going to learn 10 key quotations for Lady Macbeth. Read them through, Cover them, and rewrite as many as you can. Now choose one that you couldn t remember reread it and say it aloud. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you can remember them all. Get someone to test you the next day. Pictionary or Images Draw the quotation and test a partner to guess which quotation it is. Association with images can help jog memory in the exam. Mind Palace Go Sherlock Holmes and draw a place familiar to you. Populate this with quotations next to certain objects or points in the room. Recall this place or image in the exam and remember which quotes correspond with which part of the room/place.

18 How you can help Test them on themes, characters and plot Encourage them to explain the plot to you Test them on key quotations Use revision guides to ask them questions about the themes and characters- make sure they can support their points. When revising poems ask them to make links between them based on themes.
