They were designed t prepare students fr success in cllege, in careers, and in daily life. This is the secnd f three curses that build upn the theme f mathematics as sense making. Students will investigate real-life cntext and develp an understanding f imprtant mathematical cncepts which in turn enables students t make sense ut f new situatin and prblems. Students in this class will be engaged in a variety f learning strategies such as small learning grups t develp their ability t manipulate data, prblem slve and find cmmnality in ther students diverse ideas. This requires the student t take respnsibility fr their wn actins and wrk t be successful. Units f Study: 1. Functins, Equatins, and Systems 2. Crdinate Methds 3. Nn-Linear Functins and Equatins 4. Trignmetric Methds 5. Prbability Distributins Classrm Plicies: 1. Be in yur seat with materials ready (paper, pencil, calculatr, etc.) when the bell rings. 2. NO fd r drink will be allwed unless given by the teacher. Students may have a bttle f water. 3. Cell Phne/iPd use at teacher s discretin. 4. Participate apprpriately. I always encurage participatin, class discussins, questins, etc. in my classrm. Raise yur hand and wait t be called n. 5. Always be curteus, cnsiderate, and respectful tward thers and their prperty. 6. Fllw all schl rules. Classrm Prcedures and Expectatins: Self-cntrl is a sign f maturity. Every student is respnsible fr his/her behavir. Every classrm disruptin interferes with learning. Therefre, students shall fllw the rules listed belw. 1. Entering the classrm Be in yur seat when the bell rings t begin class. D nt be running thrugh the dr. The dr will clse and lck at the bell. If yu arrive after the bell rings, yu must get a sweep pass frm smene in the hallway. Upn entering the classrm, sit in yur assigned seat, have yur hmewrk ut, have all materials ready, and begin the warm up activity quietly and independently unless therwise specified. 2. Class Annuncements All DAILY annuncements (ex. Hmewrk assignments, tests dates, etc.) will be psted n the whitebard right f the SmartBard. 3. Using Classrm Resurces Yu may sharpen pencils and thrw away trash withut raising yur hand as lng as it is in an rderly manner (nt during teacher instructin). Keep yur area clean and neat. 4. Leaving the Classrm during the perid Students must ask permissin t leave the classrm during the class perid. Only ne student will be allwed ut f the classrm at a time, and it is under the teacher s discretin when it is apprpriate fr the student t be able t leave class instructin. Restrm breaks will be taken during class changes. If yu need t use the restrm during class (cell phne will be left n my desk), yu may g quietly, hwever nt during the lessn (during teacher instructin).

2 5. Shwing Wrk ALL WORK must be shwn n ALL ASSIGNMENTS (ex. Hmewrk, tests, quizzes, etc.). Answers nly will nt be accepted. Math is mre abut the prcess and hw yu, the student, arrives at his/her answer, rather than just the answer. *This is a great way t receive partial credit! 6. Tests There will be NO talking after a test has been administered. Extended time fr a test will be at teacher discretin. If yur finish a test early, be respectful f yur classmates and sit quietly at yur desk while they finish their test. **CHEATING will result in a zer and may result in a discipline referral.** This includes, but is nt limited t cpying hmewrk, discussing an unfinished test, r lking at smene else s paper during a test. Students will NOT be allwed t make up zers fr cheating. All parties invlved receive a 0 and parents will be ntified. 7. Sleeping When a student chses t sleep in my class they miss valuable infrmatin frm the lessn that they will need in rder t cmplete the assignments. If a student has a reasn fr needing t sleep, whether it be medical, envirnmental r therwise meet with me s that I can review the situatin. 8. Tardiness A student is tardy t class if they are nt physically in their classrm and ready t begin when the bell rings. After 1 st Tardy - Warning; 2 nd Tardy - Must serve after schl detentin/parent Cntact; 3 rd Tardy - Administrative Referral A student wh is mre than 10 minutes late t class, withut an excused nte, will be cnsidered skipping. This will result in a referral t an administratr. 9. Absences Yu shuld meet with me as sn as yu return t determine the items that yu have missed while yu were absent. If yu ntify me f an absence in advance, I will be mre than willing t get yu ntes and required wrk fr the missed day. Yu will have 3 days t make up any missed assignments. If yu g n a schl spnsred field trip then yu will be cunted PRESENT and will be held accuntable fr getting the missed assignment(s) befre yu leave. 10. Dismissal at the end f Class I dismiss the class, NOT the bell. Smetimes we will cver a lt f material within a class perid that will take us up t the last minutes f class and I need everyne s undivided attentin. *D NOT stand by the dr waiting fr the bell t ring; it desn t get the bell t ring any earlier! (And it s a fire hazard! ) Cnsequences fr nt fllwing these rules will be as fllws: 1. Verbal warning fr minr ffenses 2. Detentin/Sent ut f class/meet with administratin 3. Parent cntact/iss 4. Office referral In case f severe vilatins, an ffice referral may be immediate respnse. Serve vilatins include, but are nt limited t flagrant disrespect, fighting in class, disruptin f class, the use f prfanity, skipping class, etc. Cmpliance results in teacher selected rewards fr each situatin. This may be but nt limited t free time, being able t listen t music during certain activities, r extra credit pprtunities. Dress Cde : The Mre Cunty/Pinecrest High Schl Dress Cde will be enfrced. Please refer t yur student handbk fr the entire cde. If yu have any ther questins, please ask befre getting in truble fr wearing smething wrng. If yu vilate the schl dress cde, yu will nt be allwed int class but sent t ISS until the matter is fixed. There are n exceptins. Cell Phnes/Electrnic Devices: The schl plicy is very clear that students shuld nt have cell phnes r ther electrnic devices visible during classrm instructin; hwever, I knw mst students have them. Please put yur cell phne n silent nt vibrate! All messages will still be there at the end f the day. T alleviate issues related t having cell phnes during class (missed assignments/ntes, lack f attentin, cheating, etc.) I will cllect all cell phnes at the beginning f every class perid. Students will get their phnes back within the last five minutes f class.

3 Academic Infrmatin: Grading :(EOC (state exam) 25% f final grade) Tests: 50% Hmewrk, Classwrk, Quizzes, and ther assignments: 50% Grading Scale: A B C D Belw 60 F Tests/Quizzes: Tests are annunced a week in advance. If yu miss a test, it is yur respnsibility t make it up. Yu will have ne week t make up the test nce yu return t schl. Hmewrk must be cmplete befre entering class the next day. All wrk must be neat, well rganized, and dne cmpletely. Hmewrk is VERY IMPORTANT and will be assigned each instructinal day. Sme assignments will be graded n effrt and cmpleteness; hwever, there will be randm teacher selected assignments that will be graded fr accuracy and cmpleteness. There is NO reasn fr a lw hmewrk grade. Hmewrk must be dne in pencil (unless therwise directed). All prblems and required wrk must be shwn: NO WORK, NO CREDIT! Extra Help : I m here t help, but I cannt read minds. Students, speak up if yu dn t understand. If yu dn t want t speak up in class, please see me afterwards, sht me an , write me a nte, have a parent let me knw. Tutring : Wednesdays after schl until 5 and Thursdays befre schl starting at 8:15, therwise by appintment. Late/Make-up Wrk: It is yur respnsibility t find ut what assignments yu missed during an absence. Thse assignments shuld be made up immediately. Late wrk: Late wrk will be accepted fr half credit up t three days after the missed assignment. If yu are absent, it is YOUR respnsibility t make up the wrk missed and get the ntes frm anther student in class. Yu must shw me any hmewrk t be checked, I will nt ask fr it. If yu d nt make up an assignment, yu will receive a zer as a grade fr that assignment.

I am an alumnus f Iwa State University. I have a degree in Agricultural Educatin with a minr in Hrticulture. Thugh I am a fairly new Sandhills resident, I am familiar with the area. I am excited t have the pprtunity t be wrking with the staff f Pinecrest High Schl and yur student. Yur child is enrlled in Math 2. Yur child must pass this curse in rder t cntinue nt the next math curse (typically that is Math 3). This curse has a required state exam (NCFinal) at the end f the semester that will cunt 25% f yur child s final average. Yur child has a cpy f the curse syllabus, classrm prcedures/expectatins and ther imprtant infrmatin needed t be successful in this class. Please take the time t review these dcuments with yur child and sign the Student-Parent-Teacher Agreement Frm alng with yur child. This frm shuld be returned as the first classrm assignment.
