Lesson 5: Istanbul- a city by the sea (Geography lesson 2) Lesson 5 Key questions Outcomes Resources provided with this topic Other resources Vocabulary Geography lesson 2 Where is Istanbul? What can we learn about Istanbul from looking at an aerial photo? What can we learn about Istanbul from looking at photos of boats? What can we learn about Istanbul from looking at photos of bridges? Children learn: To identify features on an aerial photo Istanbul is in the North West of Turkey Istanbul bridges two continents The Black Sea, Bosphorus, Golden Horn and Sea of Marmara are key to Istanbul s physical geography The above influence human activity Boats have different functions Tourism brings work to Istanbul The features of two bridges and the similarities and differences between the bridges PowerPoint for this lesson Aerial photo of Istanbul MSL5 Make logical conclusions from looking at an aerial photograph WSL5 What can we learn about Istanbul from looking at photos of boats MSL5 Ships and boats on the Bosphorus and Golden Horn have different functions Galata Bridge photos for lesson 5 WSL5 Table WSL5 Match these statements to the relevant photo MSL5 Match the descriptions to the photos of the Bosphorus Bridge MSL5 GPQ Bosphorus Bridge WSL5 Comparing features of the Bosphorus Bridge with the Galata Bridge MSL5 Similarities and differences between the Bosphorus Bridge and the Galata Bridge Turkey Istanbul continent country countries Black Sea Bosphorus Golden Horn Sea of Bosphorus Galata bridge Fatih bridge Marmara bridge 12
Ataturk North South East bridge West ferry ferries fishing boat aerial photo cruise ship tourist tourism tourist ferry Start by revising what was learnt in geography lesson 1. Where is Turkey on a world map? What countries does Turkey have borders with? Which seas surround Turkey? What are some of the main cities in Turkey? What is a continent? 1. Look at the map of Turkey. Where is Istanbul? Is it N, S, E or W? Is it NW or NW? TTYP 2. Look at this aerial photo of Istanbul. What can you see? TTYP 13
3. After you have heard the children s responses enter into a guided discussion with them using the next slide in the PowerPoint. As you confirm the children s responses/move the learning on you must establish that: The Black Sea is to the North of Istanbul The Sea of Marmara is to the South The Bosphorus Strait divides Istanbul, making it a unique city- the only one in the world that is in two continents The Golden Horn is a natural harbour that partly divides the European side of Istanbul 4. Now look carefully at the enlarged version of the aerial photo. How might people travel from the European side of Istanbul to the Asian side? TTYP 5. After you have heard the children s responses enter into a guided discussion with them using the next slides in the PowerPoint. As you confirm the children s responses/move the learning on you must establish that: bridges across the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn ships/boats travel into the centre of Istanbul via the Bosphorus some of the main bridges area. Fatih Bridge b. Bosphorus Bridge c. Galata Bridge d. Ataturk Bridge 6. The children should now do some short writing to summarise what they have learnt. Teachers should differentiate according to the needs of the children in the class. The most able will need less support than provided in the writing frame below. This writing is best done in a literacy lesson. Stick a copy of the aerial photo next to the writing so it has a context. I have been looking at an aerial photo of Istanbul. The green parts are The brown parts are The yellow-coloured parts in the North are The blue parts are. To the North of Istanbul is the South of Istanbul is the Running through the middle of Istanbul is the To the West of the Bosphorus is the Bridges connect the European side of Istanbul to the Asian side. The names of some of the bridges are listed below People also travel by So you can see When you mark their work use: MSL5 Make logical conclusions from looking at an aerial photograph 7. After children have finished their summing up of phase 1 of this lesson ask them to look at the following picture. 14
What do you see? TTYP 15
8. After the children have had around 45 seconds to looks at this you should enter into guided discussion with them to establish that: buildings in Istanbul are both old and new at the end of this walkway there is a very big ship, a cruise ship the only clue to this is the lifeboats children may well assume the cruise the ship is a new block of flats 9. Tell the children that they are going to find out what they can learn about Istanbul from looking at photos of boats. 10. Give the children the following photos to look at. 1 16

5 11. Ask them what they think is happening in each one. Then tell them that the photos can be matched to four categories: Cruise ships Fishing Tourist boat trips Ferries for working people Ask them to sort the pictures into these categories. Now ask them which pictures don t involve work of some kind. Who is working and who is not working? Who is gaining pleasure and who is doing their normal thing? What are the benefits of tourism? 12. Complete a table like the one below. Use the worksheet with filename: WSL5 Table. Type of boat Picture number Work, tourism or both? (W, T or W and T.) Cruise ships Tourist boat trips Fishing Ferries for working people 19
13. Recorded work Use the worksheet with filename: WSL5 What can we learn about Istanbul from looking at photos of boats This should be stuck next to the writing below so the writing refers to the relevant pictures. When you mark their work use: MSL5 Ships and boats on the Bosphorus and Golden Horn have different functions WSL2 What can we learn about Istanbul from looking at photos of boats The writing frame below can be adapted as needed. What can we learn about Istanbul from looking at photos of boats? I have been looking at photos of Pictures 1 and 2 show The category I would put this in is The third photo shows This is in the category. This is because Photo 4 is a picture of The category I would put this in is because The final photo shows a This goes in the category. Extension I think tourism is for Istanbul because 20

14. After establishing that the previous photo shows people fishing off a bridge, look at the map and, through questioning, get the children to identify where four bridges cross the water (the Golden horn and Bosphorus). Tell them the names of the bridges and quiz them on this. The Bosphorus Fatih Bridge Bosphorus Bridge Galata Bridge Ataturk Bridge Use the next slide to develop their knowledge of the names and locations of these bridges further. How would I get from the red dot to the yellow dot? Etc etc Fatih Bridge 22
15. Give the children the following photos to look at. Tell them they are of the Bosphorus Bridge
4 5 24
Ask them to think about the following questions: Where was the photographer when the pictures were taken? What kind of bridge is this? What can see on the bridge? 16. Now ask them to match these statements to the relevant photo. (WSL5 Match these statements to the relevant photo) Use the marking stickers: MSL5 Match the descriptions to the photos of the Bosphorus Bridge MSL5 GPQ Bosphorus Bridge Statements to match to the photos: This is the Bosphorus Bridge. The bridge spans the Bosphorus joining Asia to Europe. The land behind the bridge is on the Asian side of Istanbul. You can see tall electricity pylons on the hill behind the bridge. This is a view looking up to the Bosphorus Bridge. The person taking the photo must have been in a boat travelling under the bridge. The Bosphorus Bridge is a suspension bridge. A suspension bridge is a type of bridge in which the deck (the part the cars drive on) is hung below suspension cables on vertical suspenders. It is 1,510m long. This view of the bridge shows the European side of Istanbul. You can see the business centre of Istanbul in the background- there are lots of tall office buildings. At night time the bridge is lit up with lights that change colour. Did you know? The bridge was built in It is a popular belief that a wish made while going under the bridge will come true. On 15 May 2005 U.S. tennis star Venus Williams played a show game with İpek Şenoğlu on the bridge, the first tennis match ever to be played on two continents! 25
17. Give the children the following photos to look at. Tell them they are photos of the Galata Bridge. What can see on top of the bridge? What can you see under the bridge? What kinds of activities happen around the bridge? 1 26

9 Ask them to think about the following questions: What can see on top of the bridge? What can you see under the bridge? What kinds of activities happen around the bridge? Through guided discussion establish the answers to these questions. Ask them to name the stretch of water the Galata Bridge crosses. 31
18. Complete a table to show human activity on and around the Galata Bridge. On top of the bridge Around the bridge Under the bridge Taxis (8) Man cleaning mussels he has caught in the Restaurants, bars and cafés (6) Van (8) Golden Horn (9) Tram (8) People walking across the bridge on the pavement - pedestrians(8) Market stall selling and hiring fishing equipment (4) Market stalls selling fish (5) People relaxing in one of the bars (7) Waiters (7) Boats on the Golden Horn (2) (1) Fishermen fishing (6) Fish the fishermen have caught (3) Cruise ship on the Bosphorus (8) People enjoying the view (8) Try a Venn diagram to group the activities into work and leisure. (This can be done in a maths lesson if time is short.) Discuss why some things do not fit into one category neatly. Eg The taxi is work for the taxi driver, but the passenger might well be a tourist. The tram mans work for the tram driver, but contains a mixture of people going to work and tourists. WORK LEISURE Van Fishermen Cleaning mussels Waiter Market stall selling and hiring fishing equipment Taxi Tram Cruise ship on the Bosphorus People relaxing in bars People walking across the bridge on the pavement (pedestrians) People enjoying the view 32
19. Compare the two bridges. This table shows the answers to make marking as quick as possible. Use worksheet: WSL5 Comparing features of the Bosphorus Bridge with the Galata Bridge When you mark their work use: MSL5 Similarities and differences between the Bosphorus Bridge and the Galata Bridge Bosphorus Bridge Galata Bridge Joins two continents: Europe and Asia Crosses the Golden Horn Crosses the Bosphorus Has cars and other vehicles on it Fishermen Tram Pedestrians Suspension bridge 490m long 1,510m long Has boats travelling under it Has bars and restaurants under it Links different parts of Istanbul together 33
20. Finish this lesson by asking the children which bridges they would cross to get from the one coloured circle to another. Eg Which bridges do I need to cross to get from the red circle to the green circle? 34
