7 Math and Science for Fourth Grade For further information go to:

8 Mathematics The Mathematics Curriculum is divided into ten units. Five are covered before Christmas and five more are covered after the new year. There is a beginning of the year assessment, midyear assessment, and end of the year assessment. Benchmark tests occur after every couple of units.

9 UNIT 1 Data and Probability This unit focuses on organizing and displaying data. Students should be familiar with tables, line plots, and bar graphs. New concepts will be: Line graphs showing change over time Describing data using median, mode, and range

10 UNIT 2 Factors, Multiples and Arrays Students will: develop ideas about the meaning of operations with whole numbers (Understanding and working with an array model of multiplication); the development of computational fluency (with multiplication combinations up to 12 x 12); the structure of place value; the base-ten number system. They will also learn to make generalizations about numbers and operations. FACTORS MULTIPLES

11 UNIT 3 Patterns, Change, and Functions Students will be able to: identify, describe and extend patterns; write and find the value of expressions; write and solve equations; find and use a rule to complete a function table; and use ordered pairs to find and name points on a grid.

12 Students will: UNIT 4 Fractions/Decimals (Pre-MSA) interpret the meaning of the numerator and denominator of a fraction; write, read, and apply fraction notation; represent fractions greater than 1; identify everyday uses of fractions and decimals; read and write tenths and hundredths; represent tenths and hundredths as a part of an area; add and subtract fractions and decimals. A recurring theme in the Common Core Standards is the fact that fractions can only be compared or equivalent if the whole in equivalent. ½ of a cake is not the same as ½ of a cookie.

13 UNIT 5 Landmarks and Large Numbers The unit focuses on four Mathematical Emphases: 1) The Base Ten Number System Extending knowledge of the number system to 10,000 2) Computational Fluency Adding and subtracting accurately and efficiently 3) Whole number operations Describing, analyzing, and comparing strategies for adding and subtracting whole numbers 4) Whole number operations Understanding different types or subtraction problems

14 UNIT 6 Geometry Students develop ideas about the attributes of 2-D and 3-D shapes. Students come to understand how these attributes determine their classification.

15 UNIT 7 Measurement In this unit, students will have the opportunity to: -Use linear measure to measure items using both standard and customary measurement systems -Convert linear measurements (feet, inches, and yards) -Work with elapsed time problems -Use perimeter and review area -Estimate and determine weight, mass, and capacity -Coordinate Planes

16 UNIT 8 Multiple Towers and Division Stories This unit focuses on the meaning of operations with whole numbers, the development of computational fluency, the structure of place value, and the base-ten number system. They will also make generalizations about numbers and operations. The unit focuses on four Mathematical Emphases: 1. Computational Fluency Solving multiplication problems with two-digit numbers 2. Whole Number Operations Understanding and using the relationship between multiplication and division to solve division problems 3. Whole Number Operations Reasoning about numbers and their factors 4. Whole Number Operations Representing the meaning of multiplication and division

17 UNIT 9: Fraction Card and Decimal Squares There are three Mathematical Emphases: 1. Rational Numbers -Understanding the meaning of fractions and decimal fractions 2. Rational Numbers -Comparing the values of fractions and decimal numbers 3. Computation With Rational Numbers -Using representations to add rational numbers

18 UNIT 10: How Many Packages? How Many Groups? This unit focuses on the meaning of operations with whole numbers, the development of computational fluency, the structure of place value, and the base-ten number system. They will also make generalizations about numbers and operations. Many strategies for multiplication and division are introduced in this unit. 19 Science The Science curriculum is divided into thirteen units. Each quarter consists of 2-4 units. There are two county assessments. One is at the end of second quarter and the other at the end of fourth quarter.
