1 Mock Interview Monday, March 20 Friday, March 24, 2017 Behavioral Questions and Guide Phone & Skype (or other video chat system) Interview Instructions: 1. You received the contact information for your student match(es) on Thursday, March Call or video chat the student at the phone number or Skype name provided in the from RSPH Career Development. 3. The first minutes (adjust based on your availability) you will ask the questions provided in this interview packet. There is space for your notes and feedback guidance for each question on pages There is a list of Additional Questions on page The last 5-15 minutes (adjust based on your availability) of the interview, use your notes and the Feedback/Evaluation Form on page 5 to provide feedback to the student. 6. By Monday, March 27, scan a copy of your interview notes and them to ladawna.m.jones@emory.edu. If using Skype: 1. Login to Skype under the username you provided. 2. Once logged in, search the student s username provided in the from RSPH Career Development. For assistance with Adding Contacts, click HERE. 3. After you ve added the contact, you may now start a video call. Click HERE for instructions. Interview Evaluation Focus/Criteria (See page 5 for Feedback/Evaluation Form): a. Professional Tone b. Clear and Concise Communication/Delivery c. Positive Personality Traits in: i. Leadership ii. Motivation iii. Collaborative Mindset iv. Self-awareness v. Likeability 3. Tips for Feedback for assistance below each question
3 Candidate Name: Tell me about yourself and why you chose to pursue a career in public health. Tips for feedback: Does the student clearly elucidate his/her relevant history? Is he/she passionate about a certain area of public health? What is your greatest strength and your greatest weakness? Tips for feedback: Does the student demonstrate self-awareness regarding a strength and weakness? Does he/she state what they are actively doing to address/improve their weakness? Tell me about the first job you ve ever had. What did you do to learn the ropes? Tips for feedback: Does the student reflect upon his/her ability to adapt in a new environment? Was the student able to find a lesson learned or silver lining in the situation? page 1 of 6
4 We all make mistakes we wish we could take back. Tell me about a time you wish you d handled a situation differently with a colleague. Tips for feedback: Does the student provide enough detail about the experience so that you can understand the situation? Does he/she take responsibility for their part in the situation? Does he/she say anything negative about the colleague or others involved? Does he/she indicate a reasonable resolution for handling things differently? Sometimes it s just not possible to get everything on your to-do list done. Tell me about a time your responsibilities got a little overwhelming. What did you do? Tips for feedback: Is the student specific in the details of the situation and actions? Did he/she demonstrate the use of logic in their approach to resolving the issue? What was their approach to prioritizing their responsibilities? How effective was the approach in helping them meet deadlines/complete tasks? Tell me about a successful presentation you gave and why you think it was a hit. Tips for feedback: Does he/she describe how they prepared for the presentation? Does he/she mention any feedback they received from their audience? Does the student express any strengths related their presentation style? page 2 of 6
5 What are your ultimate career goals? Tips for feedback: Does the student have a clear sense of his/her career trajectory? Is he/she taking steps in that direction? Do his/her goals align with those of a public health professional? What are your salary expectations for your career in public health? Tips for feedback: Students should not give specific numbers. They should exhibit a commitment to the field and desire to find a position where he/she can apply skills and grow. If he/she does supply a number, is it a wide range and does it sound reasonable for their desired employment sector? (Career Development can assist students with this in coaching sessions!) Do you have any questions for the interviewer? Tips for feedback: Students should always have questions focused on the position/organization rather than I, self-centered questions. Remind the student that they are still being evaluated here. For example, asking what are the expectations for the first six months rather than asking about the benefits package or promotional path. page 3 of 6
