1 Pre-Algebra EMS 8 th Grade Math Department Math Florida Standard(s) Benchmarks, Descriptions and DOK levels Unit 8: Bivariate Data Dates: February 1 st 12 th *MAFS.8.SP.1.1 (DOK 2) Construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities. Describe patterns such as clustering, outliers, positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear association. *MAFS.8.SP.1.2 (DOK 2): Know that straight lines are widely used to model relationships between two quantitative variables. For scatter plots that suggest a linear association, informally fit a straight line, and informally assess the model fit by judging the closeness of the data points to the line. *MAFS.8.SP.1.3 (DOK 2): Use the equation of a linear model to solve problems in the context of bivariate measurement data, interpreting the slope and intercept. For example, in a linear model for a biology experiment, interpret a lope of 1.5 cm/hr as meaning that an additional hour of sunlight each day is associated with an additional 1.5 cm in mature plant height. *MAFS.8.SP.1.4 (DOK 3): Understand that patterns of association can also be seen in bivariate categorical data by displaying frequencies and relative frequencies in a two-way table. Construct and interpret a two-way table summarizing data on two categorical variables collected from the same subjects. Use relative frequencies calculated for rows or columns to describe possible association between the two variables. For example, collect data from students in your class on whether or not they have a curfew on school nights and whether or not they have assigned chores at home. Is there evidence that those who have a curfew also tend to have chores? Learning Goal Students will be able to formulate and reason about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations. Essential What are the types of data displays and how and when do we use them? Describe how Question(s) to construct and interpret scatter plots and their relationships between the data. Assessments Pre- 5 Question Pre-Quiz Assessments Formative Scatterplot practice worksheets, Experimental Activities, Quiz Level Assessments 2-4, Springboard Lesson 35 Activity Practice Summative Unit Test Assessments Progress Students with 70% or less on quizzes will receive remediation and have the opportunity Monitoring/ to re-take the quizzes for a better grade. Possible remediation includes Khan academy, Feedback Loop re-teaching worksheets, small group instruction. Higher Order Question(s) What is the effect of a change on the graph? What does it mean to be above the line or below the line of a line of best fit? Does the line represent a good fit for the data? Why or why not? How do you interpret the meaning of the slope and intercept of a linear equation? Key Vocabulary Model, Bivariate Data, Clustering, Outliers, Scatter Plot, Correlations, Line of Best Fit, Quantitative Variables, Qualitative Variables.
