1 AP STATISTICS SUMMER ASSIGNMENT Summer Assignment includes: 1. The Practice of Statistics text book. 2. Reading Chapter 1 3. Completing Chapter 1 Guided Notes (a separate document) 4. Completing Chapter 1 Homework Problem Set (on back) Introduction: Welcome to AP Statistics! Below are the directions for the summer assignment. The purpose of this assignment is to get us off to a strong start by covering the first chapter of the AP Statistics book. This will ensure that we have sufficient time to cover all of the material in the course and ample time to review for the AP exam. The first chapter is mostly a review of concepts you have learned in previous math courses but you will need to focus on the new AP Statistic vocabulary. During the school year, we would normally take about 3 class periods to get this work done. Please read these directions carefully and contact me by at EAdvocat@kearnyschools.com if you have any questions about the assignment or require clarification about my expectations of the work that you do. Also see my LiveBinder page for additional information on the summer assignment at: Resources/supplies: Our textbook is The Practice of Statistics (Starnes, Yates, Moore, 4 th ed.). I will refer to this book as TPS4e throughout the year. This textbook is well-aligned to the AP Statistics curriculum and the sample problems and activities will prepare you well for the AP Statistics exam. You will need a TI-84+ graphing calculator (GIVEN). I will be demonstrating problems using the TI-84+ all year and tips on how to use this calculator are provided throughout the TPS4e textbook. The textbook also explains how to use the TI-89 as well. I recommend a large 2 ½ binder; since I will provide a large number of AP Practice problems, Assignment: 5. Read Chapter 1 Exploring Data. There are 81 pages in this first chapter, but it is probably the easiest chapter we will cover. Pay careful attention to the examples, the calculator procedures, and the AP Exam tips that are located in the page margins. 6. As you read, complete the Guided Reading Notes. These notes will help you focus on the key concepts and new vocabulary. This will be collected and graded. I have posted a Microsoft Word Document for these Guided Reading Notes so that you can type your notes if you wish. 7. Complete the Chapter 1 Homework Problems Set. Solutions are on my web site for you to self-correct your work. All work MUST be shown completely (in your own words) for these problems: 1.I HW: Pg. 7 (1, 3) 1.1 HW: Page 22 (11, 15, 17, 19, 21, 25)

I have included solutions on my web site to the MC questions in each section for you to review and help you prepare for your Chapter 1 Test. You do NOT need to hand these in. 8. For additional resources for checking your understanding, go to my page. There is a section dedicated to the summer assignments. You will find several useful aids, including o Glossary of Important Terms for Chapter 1 o The AP Stats YouTube Channel Videos 1-9 are on this chapter. Caution about Academic Integrity: DO NOT copy the answers to any assignment from sources you find on the internet, the textbook solutions, or my posted answers on the web site. Doing so will be considered plagiarism and consequences of such actions will result in zero s. The answers on my web site are meant to check your understanding after you have completed a problem and assist you in making necessary corrections. The textbook gives answers to the odds but you need to show all work done to derive the answer; and answers must be in your own words! Caution! Answers you find on the internet are sometimes incorrect and will often be stated using terminology and techniques that are not specific to the current AP Statistics curriculum. Plus, this will make it easy for me to identify work that is not your own. Due Date and Grading of Summer Assignment: Summer assignments must be completed by the first full day of school! I will not accept any late summer assignments so do not wait until the last minute to work on these. Each student will read and learn at a different pace. Read the EXAMPLE sections and make sure you understand the answers to the questions. Read TECHNOLOGY CORNER sections and ACTUALLY DO the examples with your calculator. Make sure you understand how to use your calculator!!!! It will be your best friend You do NOT need to read the ACTIVITY sections! 7 1.2 Analyzing Categorical Data 1. Here is a sketch of a dotplot. What is the advantage of using this type of graph (discuss size of the data set and what the graph shows)? What does each Dot represent? What is missing from graph? 2. [VERY IMPORTANT CONCEPT!!] When examining a distribution, you must describe the overall pattern with these 4 components. AND if you compare 2or more distributions, you must write a sentence for each of the following 4 components. Each sentence discusses a component and compared the distributions. S O C S I call this CUSS and BS. You can use either mnemonic. Center, Unusual, Shape, Spread and Be Specific, Make sure you understand how to compare distributions in context. 3. Describe Shape a) Describe and illustrate the following distributions: Symmetric (do NOT use the word NORMAL here!) Skewed to the right (or positively skewed) Skewed to the left (or negatively skewed) 5

What is the advantage of using a stemplot (discuss size of the data set and what the graph shows)? Give an example of a KEY, which is required in stemplot graph: a) When is it beneficial to split the stems on a stemplot? b) When is it best to use a back-to-back stemplot? 5. When is a histogram a better choice of a graph than a dotplot or a stemplot? 6. Are bar graphs and histogram the same? NO! IMPORTANT Make sure you understand the differences!!! Bar graphs display "categorical data" and the bars are NOT connected. Histograms display "continuous numerical data", that is data that represents measured quantity, and the bars are connected to show the shape of the distribution 7. 13 The Practice of Statistics for AP*, 4 th Edition Glossary Chapter 1 The 1.5 IQR Rule for Outliers Call an observation an outlier if it falls more than 1.5 IQR above the third quartile or below the first quartile. Association Occurs between two variables if specific values of one variable tend to occur in common with specific values of the other. Back-to-back stemplot (also called a back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot) Used to compare the distribution of a quantitative variable for two groups. Each observation in both groups is separated into a stem, consisting of all but the final digit, and a leaf, the final digit. The stems are arranged in a vertical column with the smallest at the top. The values from one group are plotted on the left side of the stem and the values from the other group are plotted on the right side of the stem. Each leaf is written in the row next to its stem, with the leaves arranged in increasing order out from the stem. Bar graph Used to display the distribution of a categorical variable or to compare the sizes of different quantities. The horizontal axis of a bar graph identifies the categories or quantities being compared. Drawn with blank spaces between the bars to separate the items being compared. Bimodal Describes a graph of quantitative data with two clear peaks. Boxplot A graph of the five-number summary. The box spans the quartiles and shows the spread of the central half of the distribution. The median is marked within the box. Lines extend from the box to the extremes and show the full spread of the data. Categorical Variable Places an individual into one of several groups or categories. Conditional distribution Describes the values of one variable among individuals who have a specific value of another variable. There is a separate conditional distribution for each value of the other variable. Data analysis A process of describing data using graphs and numerical summaries. Dotplot A simple graph that shows each data value as a dot above its location on a number line. Distribution Tells what values a variable takes and how often it takes these values. First quartile Q1 If the observations in a data set are ordered from lowest to highest, the first quartile Q1 is the median of the observations whose position is to the left of the median. 14 The Practice of Statistics for AP*, 4 th Edition Glossary The Five-Number Summary Consists of the smallest observation, the first quartile, the median, the third quartile, and the largest observation, written in order from smallest to largest. In symbols, the five-number summary is Minimum Q1 M Q3 Maximum Frequency table Displays the count (frequency) of observations in each category or class. Histogram Displays the distribution of a quantitative variable. The horizontal axis is marked in the units of measurement for the variable. The vertical axis contains the scale of counts or percents. Each bar in the graph represents an equal-width class. The base of the bar covers the class, and the bar height is the class frequency or relative frequency Individuals Objects described by a set of data. Individuals may be people, animals, or things. Inference Drawing conclusions that go beyond the data at hand. Interquartile range IQR Q 3 Q 1 Marginal distribution The marginal distribution of one of the categorical variables in a two-way table of counts is the distribution of values of that variable among all individuals described by the table. Mean The arithmetic average. To find the mean x of a set of observations, add their values and divide by the number of observations. Median M The midpoint of a distribution, the number such that half the observations are smaller and the other half are larger. To find the median of a distribution: 1. Arrange all observations in order of size, from smallest to largest. 2. If the number of observations n is odd, the median M is the center observation in the ordered list. 3. If the number of observations n is even, the median M is the average of the two center observations in the ordered list. Mode The value or class in a statistical distribution having the greatest frequency. Multimodal Describes a graph of quantitative data with more than two clear peaks. Outlier An individual value that falls outside the overall pattern of a distribution. Overall pattern In any graph of data, look for the overall pattern and for striking departures from that pattern. Shape, center, and spread describe the overall pattern of the distribution of a quantitative variable. BFW Publishers 2011

15 The Practice of Statistics for AP*, 4 th Edition Glossary Pie chart Shows the distribution of a categorical variable as a pie whose slices are sized by the counts or percents for the categories. A pie chart must include all the categories that make up a whole. Quantitative Variable Takes numerical values for which it makes sense to find an average. Range The range of a set of quantitative data is the maximum value minus the minimum value. Relative frequency table Shows the percents (relative frequencies) of observations in each category or class. Resistant measure A statistic that is not affected very much by extreme observations. Roundoff error The difference between the calculated approximation of a number and its exact mathematical value. Segmented bar graph Used to compare the distribution of a categorical variable in each of several groups. For each group, there is a single bar with segments that correspond to the different values of the categorical variable. The height of each segment is determined by the percent of individuals in the group with that value. Each bar has a total height of 100%. Side by side bar graph Used to compare the distribution of a categorical variable in each of several groups. For each value of the categorical variable, there is a bar corresponding to each group. The height of each bar is determined by the count or percent of individuals in the group with that value. Simpson s paradox An association between two variables that holds for each individual value of a third variable can be changed or even reversed when the data for all values of the third variable are combined. Skewness A distribution is skewed to the right if the right side of the graph (containing the half of the observations with larger values) is much longer than the left side. It is skewed to the left if the left side of the graph is much longer than the right side. Splitting stems A method for spreading out a stemplot that has too few stems. Standard deviation sx Measures the average distance of the observations from their mean. It is calculated by finding an average of the squared distances and then taking the 1 square root. In symbols, s x x x. n 1 i Stemplot (also called a stem-and-leaf plot) A simple graphical display for fairly small data sets that gives a quick picture of the shape of a distribution while including the BFW Publishers 2011

Third quartile Q3 If the observations in a data set are ordered from lowest to highest, the third quartile Q3 is the median of the observations whose position is to the right of the median. Two-way table A two-way table of counts organizes data about two categorical variables. Unimodal Describes a graph of quantitative data with a single peak. Variables Any characteristic of an individual. A variable can take different values for different individuals. Variance s 2 x mean.
