3 Homework Homework is through the WileyPlus Catalyst system. Log in to using your mix address (Example: If you had an account, your password should still be the same. If you didn t have an account, your initial password should be your first name as listed in the STAR system. I suggest that you bookmark this site, so that you can get to it easily. 4 Textbook Officially, Organic Chemistry by Janice Smith, 2 nd Edition, McGraw-Hill Publishers is our textbook. Unofficially, Organic Chemistry, by Graham Solomons and Craig Fryhle, 9 th Edition, John Wiley and Sons Publishers will be our textbook. Why???? Penn explains. Issues relating to the textbook: 1. Cost ($365 for this course???) 2. Taking Penn, and then taking someone else for Organic 2 3. Penn is scheduled to teach one section of Chem 234 in the Fall 2009 semester. What if you can t get into that section? 4. On-line textbook vs paper version of the textbook

5 Exams 5 th or 6 th Week, 9 th Week, 12 th Week, Regularly Scheduled Final Exam Time Issues: Non-traditional Exam format vs Traditional Exam Format Non-traditional Exam Format (preferred by Penn) 1. Taken on the Computer, with your grade known to you immediately 2. Time decided upon by reservation system from times that Penn can get for a computer lab to run the exam. With 270 students in the two sections, this would probably mean Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday exams, based upon 45 students/available time slot. 3. Practice before taking the exam will be available, in the exact exam format 4. Everyone gets a different set of questions, randomly chosen by the computer. An exam retake on the final exam will be available if you didn t make the grade that you thought that you earned or that you desired in this course. Traditional Exam Format 1. Everyone takes the test on paper at the same time (Thursday evening). 2. Everyone gets the same questions. 3. No practice before the exam to see if you know the material or not. 4. Knowing your exam grade is dependant upon the speed of Penn s proctor/graders 5. No retake on any exam. 6. Special situations are a problem, because Penn has to make up separate, but equal, exams. As always, the ability to have the same exam quality/level is subject to the eye of the individual taking the exam. Although Penn makes every effort to ensure fairness, there has been a perception that some exams are harder than others. Vote for your preference Vote for your preference by logging in to using your mix ID (example jpenn, i.e., leave off the mix.wvu.edu) and your first name as listed in STAR. If you ve signed up for this course after Monday January 5, you are probably not in my list and you need to be added to be able to get a vote. This is also the system that would be used for exam practice and exam administration, if the vote goes that way. We will either do it one way or the other, not a mix of both systems.

6 Reporting Mistakes for Bonus Credit On Windows-based Machines 1. With the mistake showing on screen, press Ctl-Alt-Prtsc on your computer keyboard. This copies the contents of the active window into the clipboard of the computer. 2. Find the program Paint in the Programs - Accessories folder. And get it going. 3. Paste the contents of the clipboard into the Paint program (Shortcut key is Ctl-V). 4. Save the file. 5. Attach it to an message to me and tell me why it is wrong. On Mac-Based Machines 1. With the mistake showing on screen, press Command-Shift-3 on your computer keyboard. This saves a copy to the desktop, which you can then to me.
