Office: S-117 Office Hours: TBA Telephone: Anatomy and Physiology II BIOL 2402, Section A3 Blinn College- Bryan Campus Fall 2010 Course Description Is the second of a two part course examining the principles of structure and function in the human body. Concepts covered this semester include general senses, endocrine system, the cardiovascular system, lymphatic and immune systems, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system and reproductive system. In addition to lecture, this class also contains laboratory exercises designed to enhance your understanding of the structure and function of the human body. This is a 4 credit hour class consisting of 3 hours lecture and 3 hours laboratory per week. Prerequisite for Enrollment Biology 2401 or Division Chair approval Core Curriculum Course This is a Core Course in the 42-Hour Core of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives. Identify the histology, structure, and function of the special senses 3. Compare and contrast the major endocrine organs and their hormone actions. 4. Devise a chart of anatomical components of the cardiovascular system and their functional roles in transport and hemodynamics. 5. Identify anatomical components of the lymphatic system and their functional roles in fluid dynamics and immunity. 6. List and describe anatomical components of the respiratory system and their functional roles in ventilation, external and internal respiration. 7. Examine and explain anatomical components of the digestive system and their functional roles in digestion, absorption, metabolism and elimination. 8. Identify anatomical components of the urinary system and their functional roles in urinary concentration, conservation of water and electrolytes, and acid/base balance.

2 9. Design a list of anatomical components and explain functional roles of the reproductive system. 10. Explain pertinent biological processes, including negative feedback and osmoregulation. Using ecampus is not optional, as a large portion of your grade comes from daily work that will be completed in this course management system. These will be worth several points each (may vary), and will serve to take attendance, encourage studying and preparation, provide me with mastery feedback, and provide you with the ONLY extra credit opportunity available for this course. To achieve maximal points, preparing for lecture by reviewing your text and available powerpoints will be to your benefit. Lecture Exams: Exams will be a combination of short answer, essay, true/false, and/or multiple choice. You will not need a scantron for any lecture exam. 5 Term Paper: You will write a 3-5 page paper (12pt font, double spaced) on a disease state or condition in the human body in one of the areas that we cover. You are required to utilize a minimum of 5 references (maximum of 2 internet websites), which must be proper cited within your text and in a works cited page at the end of your paper. You must have a cover page. Final Exam: The final exam will be comprehensive and may be multiple choice, short answer, true/false, and/or essay. YOU WILL NEED A SCANTRON FOR YOUR FINAL EXAM ONLY. FINAL EXAM: TO BE ANNOUNCED Lab Reports/Worksheets: These assignments from your lab manual will be completed in lab. Class work activities are open note, group review questions, lab reports, etc. Late work will not be graded. Lab Practicals: We will have three lab practicals throughout the semester. They will be worth 50 points each. LAB PRACTICAL ONE: WEEK 4 LAB PRACTICAL TWO: WEEK 9 LAB PRACTICAL THREE: WEEK 14 Your final course grade will be calculated as a percentage of the total amount of points available: 900 points (or greater) A points B points C points D Below 600 points F Blinn College Policies Attendance The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. Each class meeting builds the foundation for subsequent class meetings. Without full participation and regular class attendance, students shall find themselves at a severe disadvantage for achieving success in college. Class participation shall constitute at least ten percent of the final course grade. It is the responsibility of each faculty member, in consultation with the division chair, to determine how participation is achieved in his or her class. Faculty will require students to regularly attend class and will keep a record of attendance from the first day of class and/or the first day the student s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week s worth of absences during the semester, he/she will be sent an by the College, via their

6 Blinn account requiring the student to contact his/her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student subsequently accumulate two weeks worth of unexcused absences, he/she will be administratively withdrawn from class. There are three forms of excused absence officially designated by Blinn College: (1) Observance of religious holy days: The student should notify his/her instructor(s) not later than the 15 th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s); and (2) Representing Blinn College at an official institutional function and (3) official involvement in a high school activity for dual credit students. Other excuses will be considered and may be considered excusable at the instructor s discretion, with documentation. Missing lecture or lab or both will count as one absence. Dropping If a student chooses to drop the course, it is that student s responsibility to complete a drop order at the Office of Enrollment Services. Failure to do so could result in a grade of F in the course. Eating and drinking are not allowed in classrooms or laboratories. Dishonesty Statement Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism or other acts of dishonesty. Definitions of these acts and procedures for dealing with them are described in Scholastic Dishonesty in the Blinn College Student Handbook, copies of which are available at the information desk in the administration building. ADA Statement Students with physical or learning disabilities must present documentation from the Office of Disability Services (room 157, Science Bldg) to receive accommodation on exams and assignments. Accommodation is not retroactive. The above requirements and policies are discussed more fully in the Blinn College Student Handbook which, by reference, is incorporated into this information. Please obtain and read. Additional Class Policies All excused absences must be documented. You are required to provide any documentation the FIRST day you return to class or your absence will be recorded as unexcused. If you have an excused absence, you are required to turn in any assignments the first day you return to class. If you have an unexcused absence, assignments will be not be accepted (this includes exams).
