Task Description This is a generic task about creating a podcast style recording. Teachers can set this task in a curricular context of their choice. In the task, pupils are required to create, edit and publish a podcast. They need to research information to use in their podcast. They must show an awareness of audience. When making a judgement of the pupil s level of Using ICT competence within this task, teachers should use the Assessment Criteria Grid. 1

2 Prior Knowledge/Experience Depending on the level at which they are working, pupils should have experience in some of the following: understanding what podcasts are and their purpose; using a computer to record sound; editing sound files with appropriate software; and saving their work to appropriate locations. Resources Suitable sound editing software such as Audacity. Internet access. Your school s VLE copyright free music files. Managing the Task Pupils should be given opportunities to: Plan As a class, discuss the topic for discussion. Pupils can also prepare individually by researching relevant information. Write a script for the podcast. Do Pupils should work in small groups or individually to record their podcast. They should edit, refine, modify and publish their work. Depending on the level at which they are working, they should save, store and retrieve work appropriately. Review Pupils talk about their own and others work, reflecting on how it was created and the results achieved. They identify any problems faced. Pupils identify any improvements that might be made and review their work in relation to requirements of the task. Pupils talk about how they planned and approached their work, discussing what they learned through the process and how they might change the process next time. Evidence for External Moderation As well as submitting the final product, please include; evidence of planning pupil evaluation at appropriate level 2

3 Assessing Pupils Responses to the Task The first column of the Assessment Criteria Grid sets out the Requirements for Using ICT that are covered in this task. Alongside this are the Levels of Progression and the Using ICT Desirable Features for at Levels 3, 4 and 5. These Desirable Features have been produced as guidance for teachers to consider when observing a pupil and assigning a level to a piece of work. When coming to a holistic judgment of the pupil s level of Using ICT competence, teachers should ensure that these Desirable Features are used in conjunction with the Using ICT Levels of Progression. Plan your work by thinking about what you will include in your podcast and who your audience will be. Look for information about your topic in the websites given to you by your teacher. Use a computer or digital recording device with a microphone to record material for your podcast. Use a suitable software programme to create your recording. You will need to edit, refine and modify your sound files, for example by cropping the sound files or using copy and paste to repeat sound clips. Save your podcast and, with teacher s help, export it in a suitable format such as.mp3 Play your recording to the rest of the class. Discuss it with other pupils and decide how you could make it better if you were to do it again. 5

Write a script to plan the running order of your recording. Use a computer or digital recording device with a microphone to record material for your podcast. Use a suitable software programme to create your recording. You will need to edit, refine and modify your sound files, for example by altering pitch or tempo. Play your recording to the rest of the class. Discuss it with other pupils and decide how you could make it better. Make any necessary changes. Save your work in named folders. Export your recording in a suitable format such as.mp3 6

Write a script to plan the running order for your recording. Use a computer or digital recording device with a microphone to record material for your podcast. Use a suitable software programme to create your podcast. You will need to: work with multiple tracks; control the volume within the software, use fade in or fade out; and edit, refine and modify your sound files. Create a topic folder to store your sound files, you may need to create sub-folders. Play your recording to the rest of the class. Discuss it with other pupils and decide how you could make it better. Make any necessary changes. Write an account explaining how you carried out the task and identify the problems you faced.
