2 Welcome to the Year 11 Information Booklet Year 11 is a challenging yet fulfilling and enjoyable year for students. It is our aim to make sure that students achieve their full potential and are able to go on to their chosen further education courses, training schemes or employment with the necessary skills and grades they need to succeed. The aim of this booklet is to give you key information that will help support Year 11 students over the coming months as well as all stakeholders involved in this academic year. There will be many additional sessions provided to give all Year 11 students the support that they need in school, to raise achievement and maximise their progress. This however is dependent upon our students commitment and personally taking responsibility to attend appropriate sessions to make the most of what is on offer. Additionally your help in encouraging students is greatly received. The following information will be available over the next few weeks on the school website: 1. Additional Support Sessions 2. 3 What is Revision? I ve read all my notes and I can t remember any of it..! It means actively looking back over your work on an on going basis to; 1. To remind you of things you might have forgotten 2. Make links to other learning so you have the bigger picture 3. To reinforce your learning - so it stays remembered 4. To show you what you don t know 5. Check that you have understood everything Where to start? When to do it? Help them work out how much time they have, being realistic and help them plan a revision calendar. Get them to take into account their ideal time of day to work - Straight after school? - After a rest and refreshments? - After dinner?..work out the best time when they will revise and stick to it. Break it down, to make it seem manageable. Revising for GCSEs sounds like too much hard work. Revising key French verb endings is do-able. Therefore encourage them to revise by TASK rather than TIME.

4 Should I help with Revision? Research and experience shows that children whose parents/ carers take the opportunity to be frequently interested in their child s learning make most progress. What and how?!?! Does your child know what they need to know? What will actually be tested in the exam? On what day is the exam? When does the exam start and how long does it last? Help your child by asking the right questions: What do you need to take on the day? What strategies are helping you the most? You ve been studying What can you teach me? What support do you need?

5 Do they have the notes and materials they need? Exercise books, textbooks, folders that contain the information they need. Most revision guides have key information already summarised. FrogOS subject pages contain key information. Help provide the right resources for your child to revise actively: Post-it notes Revision cards Pen, ruler, paper, scissors & glue Internet access, if you have it Dictionary Scientific calculator Coloured pens Revision guides and revision podcasts We learn: 10% of what we read 20% of what we hear 30% of what we see 40% of what we see and hear 70% of what is discussed 95% of what we teach to someone else This means that the best method of learning is having to explain or teach a topic to someone else a parent/carer.

7 Balancing work and social life Agree the balance between work and social life and stick to the agreement. Flexibility is the key if a special night comes up, agree that they can make up the work at a specified time. Helpful resources and programmes: SAM Learning GCSE revision resource My Maths (Logins with pupils) Higher/Foundation Mathematics videos and model exam answers. Extensive resources in all subjects. 9 Essential equipment for the exams: Writing materials and subject specific equipment (eg. calculator) in a clear pencil case/wallet. Water bottles (labels removed) Essential Exams Regulations: Mobile phones, Tablets and Apple Watches (removed) must be turned off and handed in or kept in lockers. Revision materials must be left in bags and hands must be free from writing.

10 Year 11 Catch Up and Revision Clubs These clubs will run from September to May in the build up to exams. Some subjects have not released their date of delivery for clubs as they will be subjective to the classes that are within their subject and the n a time will be agreed with the students. 12 KS5 Choices and Process The Plume College prospectus, together with our Open Evening and website, will provide you with vital sources of information for you to find out more about Plume College. We do however strongly encourage all potential applicants and their parents/ carers to attend our College Open Evening on Thursday, 13 October 2016 (6.30pm-8.30pm) as we believe it will serve as an excellent opportunity to find out the specific details of each course you are considering. Furthermore it will also be useful to talk to current and/or former students and the staff responsible for delivering these subjects to help gather much useful perspective regarding studying at the Plume College. Students who achieve at least 5 GCSEs at A*-C grade (including GCSE level 4 in English Language) will be able to consider level 3 learning programme. Please consult the prospectus for the specific entry requirements for each course. The deadline for the application form is Friday 11 November College staff are readily available to assist you in your identification of the most appropriate programme of study through discussion at our Open Evening. Furthermore, individual help is available during our Taster Days on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 July 2017 and after GCSE results are received on Thursday, 24 August Our staff and students are always delighted to offer guidance and advice to prospective students, so please do not hesitate to ask for any information you require at any point throughout the year.
