8 Set Task Information A festival of performing arts is being organised. This year, all the performances will be based on the theme of Morality. You have been asked by festival organisers to investigate contextual influences and critically analyse the work of two performing arts practitioners. The festival organisers would like you to explore the theme of morality and justify the inclusion of the work of your two chosen practitioners in relation to the theme. In addition, they would like you to recommend which one of the practitioners you have investigated best demonstrates the theme through their work. The practitioners work will then headline the festival. Before you begin the activity, you are required to complete the following preparatory work. Research the theme: Morality Select two practitioners. The first practitioners must be selected from the following list (taken from the specification). The second will be of our own choosing (but can be selected from the list): Pina Bausch Steven Berkhoff Matthew Bourne Bertolt Brecht Peter Brook Christopher Bruce Cirque de Soleil Complicite DV8 Bob Fosse Frantic Assembly Martha Graham Akram Khan Kneehigh Joan Littlewood Andrew Lloyd Webber Katie Mitchell Punchdrunk Stephen Sondheim Stanislavski The second practitioner of your own choice can be from any practice in performing arts whose work addresses the theme of the festival. 6 6 Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Performing Arts Unit 1 Final Sample Assessment Materials S50120A
9 A Practitioner can be an individual or a company with international recognition and an established reputation and presence. During the investigation of your selected practitioners work, you will need to: Research both your selected practitioner using a range of relevant sources. Select relevant information related to the practitioners work and the theme. Record information. Collate information. Reference and document your research in the form of a bibliography. Produce 4 sides of A4 notes/drafts to bring into the supervised conditions. Your notes will not be submitted as part of the final outcome. 10 Set Task Submit your findings and recommendations for the festival organisation as a piece of extended writing (up to 2000 words). Your piece of extended writing should be structured and include: Contextual factors that have influenced and informed the work of the selected practitioners Critical analysis of the work of both practitioners in relation to the theme. Reference to a minimum of one piece of repertoire for each practitioner. A conclusion, including your recommendation for which practitioner s work would best demonstrate the theme of the festival. Clear examples to support your findings, judgements and conclusions. You must also include your referencing and citations of sources used in a separate bibliography. You will be assessed on your knowledge and the contextual factors that influence the practitioners work and creative intentions, your ability to critically analyse their work and the connections you make to the theme through communication of independent judgements. You should spend 3 hours completing your piece of extended writing under supervised conditions. END OF TASK Total for Activity 1 = 60 marks TOTAL FOR TASK = 60 MARKS 8 Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Performing Arts Unit 1 Final Sample Assessment Materials
11 Unit 1: Investigating Practitioners Work sample marking grid General marking guidance All learners must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the first learner in exactly the same way as they mark the last. Marking grids should be applied positively. Learners must be rewarded for what they have shown they can do, rather than be penalised for omissions. Examiners should mark according to the marking grid, not according to their perception of where the grade boundaries may lie. All marks on the marking grid should be used appropriately. All the marks on the marking grid are designed to be awarded. Examiners should always award full marks if deserved. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks if the learner s response is not rewardable according to the marking grid. Where judgement is required, the marking grid will provide the principles by which marks will be awarded. When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the marking grid to a learner s response, a senior examiner should be consulted. Specific marking guidance The marking grids have been designed to assess learner work holistically. Rows in the grids identify the assessment focus/outcome being targeted. When using a levels-based marking grid, the best fit approach should be used. Examiners should first make a holistic judgement on which band most closely matches the learner s response and place it within that band. Learners will be placed in the band that best describes their answer. The mark awarded within the band will be decided based on the quality of the answer in response to the assessment focus/outcome and will be modified according to how securely all bullet points are displayed at that band. Marks will be awarded towards the top or bottom of that band depending on how they have evidenced each of the descriptor bullet points.
