5 Information for Students In many TAFE NSW courses, some of the learning and assessment occurs in the workplace or a simulated workplace. A simulated workplace is very similar to a real workplace and may have clients, but is usually within a TAFE NSW campus. TAFE NSW has a responsibility to protect members of the public (and the students themselves) from being harmed by students taking part in workplace or simulated workplace learning. If there is evidence that your skills or behaviour could present a risk to yourself or other people in the workplace, you may not be allowed to participate in workplace learning, at least for a period of time. To help you understand your responsibilities in the workplace, you will be given a code of practice, which indicates expected standards of behaviour. As well, your teacher will explain to you and your workplace supervisor the range of duties you have the skills and knowledge to carry out. You must not carry out duties other than those indicated by your teacher. You need to take particular care if workplace clients are people who may be in vulnerable circumstances for example, people who are frail, children, young people, people with a disability or people who are receiving a type of service which may put them in vulnerable circumstances, for example, massage therapy or nursing care. A Prohibited Employment Declaration must be signed by students in courses where contact will be made with children and young people. Your teacher will give you more information about this. Students who have committed a breach of discipline or who are assessed as presenting a significant risk to themselves or others during work placement may be prevented from undertaking or continuing further work placement. This may mean they will not complete the course. If you would like more information on this policy you may seek this information from a teacher or enrolling officer. If you are unsure about whether this policy may prevent you from completing a course you could discuss the matter with a member of the TAFE NSW Counselling and Career Services Staff. The information in this student information sheet is based on the TAFE NSW policy, Promoting Safe and Ethical Practice During Student Workplace Learning, Particularly in Relation to Clients in Vulnerable Circumstances, gazetted 11 December This policy supersedes the policy, Initial and Continuing Enrolment of Students in Courses Involving Contact with Vulnerable People. 6 Roles and responsibilities of the Workplace Supervisor It is the role of the Workplace Supervisor to undertake the following. 1. Agreeing to take a student for workplace learning and assessment experience requires a nominated supervisor who is willing to take overall responsibility for the student. 2. Meet with the student and TAFE Assessor in a pre-placement interview to discuss the potential learning opportunities that the agency can offer and to clarify what the student hopes to achieve through the placement. 3. The Workplace Supervisor determines if they and the student, can work productively together and if the opportunities that the agency can offer meet the learning needs of the student. 4. Receive the student on the first day of placement, introduce him/her to other staff members and provide an agency orientation. 5. Arrange and be available for regular formal supervisory sessions with the student. 6. Provide clear and constructive feedback to the student throughout the workplace experience in relation to areas of competence and those needing further development. 7. Provide the student with on-the-job experiences and opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills that they will need to achieve competence. 8. Inform the TAFE Assessor of any difficulties arising in workplace experience that cannot be easily resolved between you and the student. 9. Consult with the TAFE Assessor should alternative arrangements for supervision be required (e.g. due to holidays, illness or emergencies). 10. Participate in a formal review, midway through the workplace experience in consultation with the student and TAFE Assessor. 11. You may be asked by the TAFE Assessor to have input into the assessment process, perhaps through written or verbal reports on the student s knowledge and skills in specific areas (third party evidence). 12. As the Workplace Supervisor you may be approached by the student to verify their competency in employability skills. This will require you to date and sign their employability skills qualification summary. 13. Provide the TAFE Assessor with access to workplace documents that relate to the student and their performance in your workplace. 14. You may also need to assist the student to collect workplace samples (such as portfolios) and other evidence of competency. Student Documentation Booklet Version 1 Page. 6 of 22

11 Workplace Journal Work placement is an opportunity to practice the skills and knowledge you have learnt to date, it is a very exciting time to consolidate what you have learned in the classroom. Work placement is also a learning activity so ensure you use the time productively to gain the most from this experience. Whilst on work placement you are required to keep a day-to-day journal, which should be completed at the end of each shift. Upon completing the 120hrs required you will need to forward the journal back to your teacher at the conclusion of the work placement. This journal acts as a record to show your understanding of the industry you are working in via the observations you make each day, as well as through practicing the skills you are developing. It is important to remember that the knowledge you build up whilst in the work environment is as significant to the course as the content studied in class. The information you write should further support the observation of your workplace performance to the trainer. Remember to take full advantage of the opportunity provided to you by your host employer and remember to Look Listen Learn You are also asked to record the hours that you work in your workplace. Please complete the Work Placement Attendance Record for each day you attend your workplace and have this signed by your supervisor. Student Documentation Booklet Version 1 Page. 11 of 22
