2 Class Descriptions BOARD GAME CLUB - Mr. Enderle and Mrs. Saguil (No charge/drop in) Meets Thursdays No class limit Tired of playing Risk for four hours? Sick of getting in Trouble and having to say you are Sorry? Board Game Club is a fun opportunity for students to try out a plethora of age appropriate strategy games. Games like Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and Pandemic are just a few of the many games featured. We help foster critical and abstract thinking, while playing fun board games. The club is drop-in and does not cost a thing. We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. DEBATE (Beg-Intermediate) Camille Caldera (Whitman students) ($15) *** Meets Tuesdays Class limit 60 (students will be broken into two groups of 30 students) The Debate program focuses on teaching students the skills necessary to be successful in creating well thought out arguments and having disagreements in a civilized manner. The critical thinking encouraged in this program just might help students get a later bedtime (but we aren t making any promises). There are opportunities throughout the year to compete against students from around the region at local tournaments. TWO SESSIONS OF BEG-INT AND ATTENDANCE AT ONE TOURNAMENT IS A PREREQUSITE FOR ADVANCED DEBATE! ***Fee covers registration, meet fees and DC Urban Debate League tournament participation fee. 3 This program allows students who have already had 2 SESSIONS of Beginner- Intermediate (and attended a tournament during that time) to further hone their skills. There are opportunities throughout the year to compete against students from around the region at local tournaments; much of advanced debate is spent preparing for tournaments and students are highly encouraged to attend. HOMEWORK CLUB (No Charge/Drop-in) Meets Tue/Wed/Thurs No class limit Drop in whenever you need assistance HIP HOP DANCE WITH MR CHON Mr. Chon ($25) Meets Thursdays Class limit 20 Learn fun, energetic hip hop dance choreography with Mr. Chon! He has been a hip hop dancer for 17 years and has taught both children and adults. The past two years he has offered a class that focused on break dancing here at Pyle. This year, it will be a class geared more toward general hip hop dance moves and routines with elements of breakdancing incorporated into them. If students are willing, the routines learned may be used for a talent show piece or another end of the year dance video but with bigger, better moves and ideas! 4 LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD CLUB Ms. Knaflec (No fee) Meets on alternating Tuesdays Class limit - 30 Library Advisory Board is going to work to promote the media center and help it grow. Students will meet in its entirety once a month after school. Students may also stay after school intermittently to work on a project such as: o the display case, o bulletin boards, o the circulation desk blackboard, o create READ posters using Photoshop, o create book displays, o promotions and/or contests, o writing book reviews, o creating book trailers, or o helping to create book order lists. MATH MATTERS Ms. Barrett ($25) Meets Wednesdays Class limit 36 Registration Session I (recommended for 7 th and 8 th graders only), Meets through early March Math Matters focuses on preparing students for competitive and applied mathematics. Interested students should be excited by higher level math and motivated to work through challenging material. This program is best for students who are already successful with higher levels of math. 6th graders are encouraged to participate in practices and become comfortable with the program, but most likely will not be selected to compete. Math Matters will meet on SOME Wednesdays of both the fall and winter Panther Programs sessions. Schedule to be decided once the county announces the competition dates. Successful students are expected to continue with the second session of Math Matters through early March.

5 THE PYLE GSA MS. WOEHRIE (NO FEE) Meets Tuesdays No Class Limit The Pyle GSA, which stands for Gender and Sexuality Alliance, meets every Tuesday after school from 3:00-4:15 in room 141. At GSA meetings, we discuss LGBTQ+ topics, host guest speakers and provide a safe, supportive environment for LGBTQ+ students at Pyle. We usually order pizza and our pizza fund is entirely donation based. Our meetings are open to all Pyle students, allies, supportive parents and staff members. PYLE FLUTE & CLARINET CHOIR MS. JOHNSON (NO FEE) Meets Wednesdays Class limit 20 Meets through May The Pyle Flute & Clarinet Choir is an advanced chamber ensemble for flute and clarinet players. Members do not need to be a part of the school instrumental music program, but participation is audition-based. Auditions are in October each year, and rehearsals are Wednesdays after school. The ensemble members learn about specific instrument technique and develop strong musical skills. The group performs several times a year, including the MCPS Ensemble Festival in February. ROBOTICS: ADVANCED- Mr. Falatko ($75) Meets Tuesdays Class limit 20 There are two session- fall which runs September to December and winter which runs January to May (Students may register for one or both sessions.) Students will use mechanical, structural, and electronic Lego components to design, build, and program a LEGO device to solve a series of robotic challenges. Students also develop a presentation project to solve a realworld problem and are evaluated on their core values and team work. The

6 fee covers challenge t-shirts and needed supplies and materials for the challenge. Students are expected to have previous experience with robotics. Session I: FIRST Lego League: On your mark, get set, flow! Drink in the Hydro Dynamics season and learn all about water; how we find, transport, use, and dispose of it. What might become possible when we understand what happens to our water? FLL is a world-wide competition, with the Pyle team participating in a regional competition in December or January. Session II: Carderock Robotics Challenge Register for session II only, but the class runs January to early May. In this challenge, students will work in teams guided by engineers from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division, to build an autonomous robot using engineering concepts. The challenge culminating event will be held at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division in mid-spring. Students are expected to have previous experience with robotics. THE WRITING AND NEWSPAPER CLUB (LEVEL 1) Alan Prunier ($20) Meets Tuesdays Class limit 35 The Writing and Newspaper Club (Level 1) sponsored by Mr. Prunier and held on Tuesdays. If you are interested in being surrounded by a community of creative, supportive, and imaginative people, then this is the place for you. This is an opportunity to be a part of the growing Writing Program at Pyle Middle School. Your writing will be directly contributed to the Pyle Inside online magazine ( On the Write Track print magazine, and to various writing contests throughout the year. The Writing Club is a relaxed but exciting place to meet other creative students interested in fiction, screenwriting, poetry, comics, drawing, storytelling, and more! Each class will teach new skills and processes of creating with particular attention to the interests of students. Students can also learn how to manage a website, format a magazine, and advertise to reach an audience. The class has a registration fee of $20 per Panther Program session, which offsets print costs and online domain registration.

7 THE WRITING AND NEWSPAPER CLUB (LEVEL 2) Alan Prunier ($20) Meets Tuesdays Class limit 10 The Writing Club (Level 2) is a section reserved for previous members of the club. It is the same club and meets at the same time, except it is designed to reserve spots for previous members. So, if you have attended sessions regularly in the past, then please register for this section. DO NOT register for this section, if you have NOT BEEN a regular at the club before.
