1 Reformed Theological Seminary Charlotte, NC Course: CO763Gospel-Centered Counseling & Care Session: Summer 2018, Meeting: August 13-17, 2018 Professor: Dr. Dwayne Bond Cell: Course Description This course helps students learn counseling skills through the use of role-play and peer evaluation. 1.1 Additional Course Description The premise of this course is that we become effective biblical counselors by giving and receiving biblical counseling in community. In the context of an encouraging small group lab experience, students will discover how to apply theology to the personal ministry of the Word. Students will learn how to think biblically (diagnosis through biblical wisdom), relate deeply (treatment through Christlike care), and communicate skillfully (intervention through relational interaction speaking the truth in love) in the context of Christian community. Interpersonal interaction and dynamics, reading, lecture, role-play, live biblical counseling, evaluation of recorded and live biblical counseling, and observation of live biblical counseling will be used to facilitate personal and ministry growth. 2.0 Course Objectives: Student-Oriented Learning Objectives Biblical Content/Conviction Goals: As a result of successful participation in this learning experience, nurtured students will be able to: Ø Conceptualize a comprehensive biblical and historical counseling approach for dealing with suffering through sustaining and healing and for dealing with struggles with sin through reconciling and guiding. Ø Discern how to enter deeply into people s lives with the truth and power of God s Word and the gospel of Christ s grace in order to help people to mature and to resolve spiritual, relational, mental, motivational, behavioral, and emotional issues. Ø Understand spiritual dynamics and discern root causes of spiritual conflicts. Ø Assess their own areas of expertise and limits, assess the resources within their own congregation, and assess the counseling approaches of others in their community in order to make wise referrals when necessary. Christlike Character Goals: As a result of successful participation in this learning experience, nurtured students will be able to: Ø Evidence an increasing likeness to Christ as manifested by love for Christ, Christians, and those who do not know Christ.

2 2 Ø Manifest a maturing and Spirit-filled character of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Biblical Counseling Competence Goals: As a result of successful participation in this learning experience, nurtured students will be able to: Ø Compassionately identify with people in pain and redirect them to Christ s grace and the Body of Christ to sustain and heal their faith so they experience communion with Christ and conformity to Christ even in the midst of suffering. Ø Provide loving wisdom that reconciles and guides souls struggling against sin so they experience communion with Christ and conformity to Christ. Ø Develop twenty-two practical biblical counseling competencies within the areas of assessment and diagnosis, treatment planning and intervention, and techniques and skills. Christian Community Goals: As a result of successful participation in this learning experience, nurtured students will be able to: Ø Experience interdependency and community with their fellow lab members. Ø Connect safely, honestly, respectfully, humbly, and deeply with fellow lab members as a model for such connection in their local church relationships and ministries. Ø Encourage their congregation to develop the type of Christian community that exemplifies speaking gospel truth in love so the Body grows up into the Head Christ. 3.0 Course Materials: Textbook, Class Notes, Recording Device, and Dropbox 3.1 Required Texts 1. Class Attendance: Attendance will be taken each day. Three late arrivals will be counted as one absence. Anyone missing 30 minutes or more of a class will be marked absent. More than 20% absence (more than one day) during the week is an automatic F. Consistent tardiness hinders your learning and the learning of your fellow students. You are expected to allow yourself enough time for weather, traffic, and other issues possibly leading to tardiness. 2. Late Assignments: No late work will be accepted for pre-class and in-class assignments. Post-class late work may still be credited with a one-letter grade penalty. No post-class late assignment will be accepted more than one week after its due date. Any exceptions need to be discussed with the Professor on a case-by-case basis. 7.0 Course Miscellaneous Preparation 1. Your reading in Gospel Conversations may well be different in language, terminology, and tenor than you perhaps have encountered previously. Prayerfully prepare yourself for this possibility. You are encouraged to engage the material like a Berean but discouraged to engage the material like a Corinthian. A Berean humbly submits the views of others to God s Word for assessment. A Corinthian argumentatively submits the views of others to one s own perspective for criticism. 2.Your lab experience may well be different in tenor, tone, and relational intensity than you perhaps have experienced previously. Prayerfully prepare yourself for this possibility. It is the conviction of your professor and the premise of this course that we become effective biblical counseling by giving and experiencing biblical counseling in the context of an encouraging community. Openness to one-another ministry from your fellow lab students and professor is invited and encouraged. 8.0 Reading Completion Forms Please scroll down to the next three pages for these forms.
