Digital level appropriate materials will be used. o Voces Digital Book and Workbook Course Description: Spanish I, is an introduction to the language and culture of the Spanishspeaking world. In this course, the learner will acquire knowledge by integrating the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Therefore, the use of Spanish in the classroom will be our primary goal. Since students need as much practice as possible to become fluent, concentration in class and oral participation in SPANISH is absolutely necessary. An effort to use the language at all times is expected. By the end of this course, students will have acquired a basic command of the key vocabulary and structures necessary for limited personal communication as well as an appreciation of the breadth and variety of the Spanish-speaking world. WHS School-Wide Expectations: To ensure an optimum learning environment, please adhere to the following: Students will be respectful to all adults and classmates. Students will be seated in class when the bell rings. Students will not display cell phones, portable electronic devices or playing cards in class. Students will use computers/ technology appropriately at all times. Violation of these rules may result in changes to school policies. Teacher Expectations: I expect that you, the student, do the following 20/20 RULE Take care of all personal business between classes. All students must remain in class, the first 20 minutes of class and the last 20 minutes of class. BRING your materials to class daily. BE in your assigned seat when the bell rings. * REMAIN seated unless permission is given to move about the room. This includes the few minutes before the class change or dismissal bell. CLEAN UP after yourself before you leave the classroom by putting trash in its proper place, returning classroom materials to the appropriate place, throwing trash into the trashcan is inappropriate for the classroom. FINISH your food and your drink before entering the class. Bottled water is ok. LISTEN during the Announcements or at any time the intercom is on. PLACE your purse and/or bookbags on the floor or under your desk not on your desk or on your back during instructional time. BE orderly and respectful; word choice/tone 1

2 *Students in the classroom, but not in his/her assigned seat when the bell rings will be the last to leave. Consequences for misbehavior are as follows: 1 st Offense Verbal Warning (Note that verbal warnings will also be documented) 2 nd Offense Written Warning or Teacher-Student Conference (first step) 3 rd Offense Teacher/Student conference/parental Notification (second step) 4 th Offense Parental Notification/ Parent-Teacher Conference (third step) 5 th Offense - Administrative Referral (forth step) Rewards Praise (daily) Positive notes or a phone call home (random for students with no infraction throughout the year) Other positive incentives (issued throughout the course) School-wide Grading Requirements as follows (year-long grading): Semester Final Average: Final exam or EOC/Milestone Assessment- 9 th - 12 th grade level courses- 20% Course Final Average- all 9 th - 12 th grade courses- 80% Formative assessment: o Practice (i.e., classwork/homework)- 20% Summative assessment: o Quizzes/labs- 35% o Major tests/projects- 45% Note: *The Formative and Summative Assessments equal 100% but fall under the category of Course Final Average which is 80% of the Course Final Average. Course Final Average- Year-long Average (80%) and Final Exam/EOC Milestone (20%) *Grades for each 9 week grading period should include a minimum of the following: 3 tests in the summative assessment/test category, 3 labs/quizzes in Lab/Quiz category and 9 Practice grades. Academic Integrity Policy: Academic integrity is a fundamental value of quality education; therefore, Woodland High School will not tolerate any acts of cheating, plagiarism, or falsification of school work. Should it be determined that an academic integrity violation has taken place, the school reserves the right to assign a grade of a zero and submit a disciplinary referral to 2

3 the appropriate Assistant Principal. The school also reserves the right to remove or suspend enrollment in any Advanced Placement/Honors classes as well as Academic Honor Societies. NOTE: The use of language translators (human, online, electronic, etc.) is strictly prohibited on ANY assignment in the world language classroom. Their use also constitutes academic dishonesty. Students may be required to redo assignments and/or complete an alternative assignment. Refer to the paragraph above for further consequences. Make-up Work Policy: It is the student s responsibility to request, complete and turn in his/her make up work according to the policy set forth in the Henry County Schools Code of Conduct. Students should plan to make up tests/quizzes during my Office Hours, which will be posted the first week of school. Assignments missed due to field trips are due on the 1st day the student returns to class. Late work policy: Practice work (homework and class work) will not be accepted late once the answers are given or the assignment is graded and returned. The same goes for tests and quizzes. I will not create an alternate assignment. This includes extra credit. Class Dismissal: You may leave the room at the end of the period ONLY AFTER YOU HEAR ME SAY "Chao or Adios. The bell does not dismiss you, I DO! I also expect your desk to be in its proper place before you leave. You are to remain seated until the bell rings. Do not congregate at the door while waiting for the bell to ring. Substitute Teachers: Whenever a substitute teacher is present in my absence, you are to behave BETTER for him/her than you do with me. This includes sitting in your assigned seat, completing and turning in all assignments, and keeping noise levels to a minimum. Technology: Students should observe WHS technology policy for appropriate use of his/her own technology as well as technology that is provided by the school. Students should also adhere to the Tecnología Encendida or Tecnología Apagada signs to know when it is appropriate to use electronic devices in class. Consequences for inappropriate use will be imposed. Interactive Notebook Checks: Students will be expected to keep a composition book for your grammar notes. You will follow the rubric to ensure that you have all of the correct information. If you are absent you are expected to get all of your missing work. 3

4 Materials: 1 Flash Drive Composition notebook (100 pages) 3-ring binder (1-1 ½ inches) Loose-leaf notebook paper Dividers (5 dividers) or color paper for dividers Writing Utensils (pencils and blue/black pens). Highlighters (pink, blue, and green). Dry erase marker Fine Point 1 Glue Stick Students will be using an online textbook called VOCES. Each student will be creating an individual account and will be responsible for paying a $5.00 fee for the year. The fee is due by the end of the first week of school. Upon payment, the student will be given a code to use in creating their own personal account. This is our primary resource for language acquisition. A copy of this syllabus should remain at the front your notebook at all times. 4
