1 SYLLABUS SPANISH 1 Sra. van de kamp BIENVENIDOS A LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL! Welcome to Spanish class! May you find the acquisition of this world language not only a challenge, but a pleasure. Let s work together to make our class interesting and fun as well as enlightening. Together we will travel the Spanish world absorbing its diverse culture, celebrate Spanish holidays, taste Spanish cuisine, and explore its wonderful language. I look forward to sharing these experiences with you and hope you will look forward to this year together as I do. There are five goals identified under these standards: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. In accordance with these goals, every effort will be made to engage all students through their individual interests & learning styles. This course is designed to introduce students to speaking and writing skills for practical, day-to-day language functions. The aim is to achieve an authentic use of the language within the contexts of selected subject areas. The course will present thematic units designed around real life situations. The goal is to generate active participation through discussions, readings and creative activities that stimulate critical thinking and complete immersion in the target language. Program of Study: The following general themes will be covered. Meeting people & personal identities School supplies and schedules Leisure time & sports Food & meals (health aspects) The arts Celebrations & holidays Home furniture and rooms Shopping & Clothing Vacations & Travel Entertainment Volunteer work Technology Extra credit All students will have the opportunity to earn up to 5 bonus points per quarter by attending Tertulia. Tertulia is an immersion 8 th period activity which comprises 40 minutes of interactive speaking and listening for Spanish students on a variety of authentic topics or a departmental event.

2 EVALUATION/GRADING: Numerous opportunities are given in a large variety of ways for students to show their progress and proficiency in the language such as tests, quizzes, compositions, written/oral PALS, projects, oral presentations, participation, homework assignments, midterm exam and final exam including written and oral PALS, some of which will be interactive. All graded work will be on a point system. Spanish will be spoken the majority of the time in the classroom (student teacher and studentstudent). Participation is crucial. Spanish class is student centered, interactive and cooperative in nature. Interim reports will be provided at midquarter. Each quarter is worth 20% of the final grade. The Final Exam includes PALS (50% and Multiplechoice (50%). The Final Exam is worth 20% of the final grade. All quarters and final exam grade total 100%. Grades are based on the development and synthesis of all skills which include oral and written proficiency, and listening and reading comprehension. Grades are calculated based on total points. CLASSROOM RULES: Be respectful and tolerant. Be prepared and pay attention. Be responsible. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. No derogatory comments or inappropriate language. Use SPANISH as the language of communication in the classroom unless permission to use English is granted by teacher. Collaborate positively with your classmates. Cell phones must be turned off during class time. No personal use of electronic devices will be permitted at any time in the classroom except by teacher permission. MATERIALS NEEDED: Textbook REALIDADES 1, Prentice Hall ISBN Workbooks will be provided by the teacher to enhance the curriculum. Students will be charged for lost textbooks. Pencil/Pen (blue or black only!) Loose-leaf three-ring binder Spanish/English Dictionary (Optional) Highlighters Book cover ( essential item for new textbook) MAKE-UP WORK: Students are responsible for making up missed class work and homework due to absence by checking Blackboard ( and the worksheets folder. All class work/homework missed due to an excused absence must be made up the next time class is in session. More time will be allotted for extended absences. Tests and quizzes will be made up during 8th period. Students have one day per absence up to a total of 10 school days to makeup tests or quizzes. Failure to complete missed assignments, quizzes or tests within the allotted time frame will result in a zero. Assignments and assessments scheduled before your absence and due during your absence are due the day you return. Assignments and assessments given on the day of an unexcused absence will result in a zero. HOMEWORK: Each homework assignment is worth PESOS. Students will receive PESOS for completed homework. Each PESO is worth 5 points. It is the student s responsibility to keep and turn in all PESOS earned at the end of each week. Total homework assignments will equal the amount of points for this category. Late homework will not be accepted. Excused absences are an exception. Homework cannot be completed in class during instructional time. ATTENDANCE: Excellent attendance is crucial to the success of foreign languages. It is requested you be on time to class (3 UNX tardies = 1 UNX absence).. Excessive tardiness and absences will require contacting the Guidance Counselor and parents.

4 TUTORING: Please feel free to request extra help when needed. Extra help will be provided during 8th period. For additional practice on your own you may use the Prentice Hall Realidades website, Other helpful websites include the following: & ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: As members of the TJ community, we honor academic and personal integrity and we uphold the values of honesty, integrity, respect and responsibility. It is important that students understand what constitutes a violation to the Honor Code. The following actions are considered violation to the Honor Code/Cheating: Giving and receiving information on quizzes/tests. Both parties are guilty. Using any type of unauthorized aid during tests and quizzes (cheat sheets, electronic/regular dictionaries, roving eyes, cell phones, graphing calculators, etc.) Copying software. Utilizing Internet translation services for homework and projects. Copying tests, quizzes, homework and projects. Discussing test material with students who have not taken the test. Giving someone a summary of the pertinent facts for a reading assignment prior to a quiz. Parental help beyond that of clarification or explanation. Talking during a test for any reason after being instructed not to talk. Plagiarism - copying the essential character of another's work, whether visual or written, and submitting as your own. Modern World Languages: Using translators, dictionaries or on-line dictionaries of any kind during a test. For other assignments/projects any use other than to establish the meaning of a word or phrase if given the permission to do so. Students may work together and assist each other while cooperatively completing assignments. However, they must be careful not to jeopardize academic integrity while collaborating with each other. In accordance with school policy, any honor code violation will be reported to the student's counselor and grade level administrator, and appropriate action will be taken. Any student found cheating will receive a zero on the assignment/assessment. Dress Code: Appropriate attire is required at all times for an educational environment. Please ensure your wardrobe does not violate School Board Policy. If you require accommodation for religious beliefs, or other reasons, you should contact the principal. Teacher may send a student to an administrator if clothing is not compliant with FCPS dress code. The administrator will ask the student to cover the noncompliant clothing, change clothes, or go home. Repeated infractions will result in disciplinary action. Please refer to your SR & R for complete details. Behavior: Involvement in the following activities will require administrator referral. Disrespect to teacher and classmates. Cursing, gesturing, harassing, or verbally abusing any person. Illegally using or accessing computers Fighting Speaking or writing vulgar, profane, obscene, or patently offensive language Participating in forgery, cheating, plagiarism, or other types of dishonest behavior Willfully disrupting school activities Defying the authority Bullying behavior Threatening others Gambling in any form Participating in gang activity Assaulting or threatening to assault a student, a staff member, or any person on school property Hazing
