Attention will also be given to the interrelatedness of language and civilization and culture. Additional attention will be given to the development of reading and writing. Students will be expected to spend several hours per week in the language laboratory. Not recommended for students with any previous study of Spanish. 4 units. Course Description: The class will be conducted primarily in Spanish. There will be daily interaction in Spanish (conversation, questions, exercises, games, etc.) which has as its primary purpose the acquisition of communicative skills in the language. The goal of this course is to facilitate communication in Spanish communication that is spoken and written. Note: instead of spending time in the language lab, you can now do the lab time online! 2 Discussion Assigned readings and exercises Visual media Small group activities Oral presentations by students Online activities Course Objectives: At the end of this semester you can reasonably expect to be able to understand and communicate in the following areas at a beginning level: Greet others, introduce yourself and others, say good bye, describe yourself and others, tell time, give the day of the week and date, describe the origin of Spanish give your class schedule, state where places are located on campus, describe the classroom, express to whom things belong, ask and describe how someone is feeling or doing, talk about professions, tell where you are going on campus, ask questions, discuss the influence of Spanish and Hispanic culture in the USA talk about family and friends, indicate possession and tell age, talk about the present, describe people, places and things, express marital status, discuss family traditions, values and trends in the Hispanic world talk about likes, dislikes, pastimes and other activities in the present, tell someone you address informally what to do, express opinions, doubts and obligations, talk about the weather and the seasons, talk about who and what you know, express future activities, discuss typical leisure activities in the Hispanic world Exams: There will be an exam on every chapter. Exams may include listening comprehension, vocabulary, reading, writing, and grammar within context. Only one exam may be made up during the semester due to absence on the day of the exam, and there is a five point penalty for makeup exams. In addition, there will be some quizzes that may be announced or unannounced. Quizzes may not be made up. 3 Homework: There will be daily homework assignments. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS will be accepted. Homework assignments will be posted on the board at the end of class and also will be posted on SacCT in the My Tasks section. If you are absent, you must check SacCT for homework assignments as well as for any handouts given out in class. This is essential to be prepared for class on the day you return. It is the student s responsibility to find out about any material or assignments missed during absence. All written homework that is not collected on a daily basis will be turned in on the day before the chapter s exam please be sure that the homework is in the order assigned and all pages stapled together. If homework is not turned in in an orderly, legible way, full credit will not be earned. WileyPlus: In addition to the written homework assignments, there will also be regular assignments from the Electronic Activity Manual in Wiley Plus. At the beginning of the semester, you will need to log in to Wiley Plus with the access code that you purchased with your text book. Students must have the Wiley Plus Premium with the Electronic Activity Manual in order to complete these assignments. You will access Wiley Plus via SacCT. If you ever have any problems with Wiley Plus or questions you should contact customer support at They are available for or live chat 24 day Mon Friday and from 4 pm Midnight Eastern Standard Time on weekends. Online Class Days: There will be some class days that will be online. It is imperative that students pay close attention to the syllabus. Online activities, assignments, and time due will be posted in SacCT by midnight of the previous day. Cultural Events: A requirement of this class is to attend at least one Hispanic cultural event during the semester and write a one-page, typed paper about it. This may be a new Spanish movie in the theater, bilingual play, concert, Hispanic celebration, etc. The purpose of this is to give you some exposure to Hispanic culture and to give you the opportunity to hear Spanish in natural contexts. Extra credit will be given if you attend and write a report on more than one cultural event. When you attend an event, you should tell us about it in class and you must write a one-page typed report about it. See the Guidelines for Cultural Events in SacCT as well as the course calendar. If you want to receive the maximum extra credit, you will need to attend and turn in a paper for one event during the months of February, March and April. (The paper is always due on the last calendar day of the month that we have class). See due dates in syllabus. Announcements of cultural events are made on SacCT under Announcements. Please check the announcements on a weekly basis. Method of Evaluation: Exams & Quizzes 70% Homework & Written Work 15% *Participation & Class Activities 15% Attendance & Grades: Since language acquisition involves daily communication practice, daily attendance and preparation are extremely important and will be averaged into the final grade. Excessive absences will not only affect the quality of language acquisition, but will also affect the final Judy Rodríguez 3

4 grade earned. For an A grade, a student must have no more than four absences. Anyone who misses two or more classes during the first two weeks of the semester will be dropped. Absences Affect Course Grade As Follows: 1-4 absences Participation points are not earned when absent 5-6 absences LOWER COURSE GRADE one-half grade; 7-8 absences lower course grade a whole grade; 9-10 absences lower course grade 2 grades; absences lower course grade 3 grades; 13 or more absences equal an automatic F in the class. Two late arrivals (or leaving early) equal one absence. If you do arrive late, please be sure to inform me at the end of class so that I can change your absence to a tardy. If you do not do this, it will be counted as an absence. If you are unable to prepare for class and attend regularly, please reconsider whether or not you should take this class. *Participation: Students have the opportunity to earn 10 participation points each day. In order to receive full participation points, you must complete the following: 1. Attend class 2. Be on time, do not leave early or go out during class 3. Be prepared for class this means having your textbook and other materials necessary for class; and that you have studied the assigned material and completed the assigned homework activities 4. Be actively involved during class this includes engaging in assigned conversational activities with other students SacCT Students will need to check SacCT on a regular basis for announcements, homework assignments, any changes to the schedule, and other information regarding the class. I will use the SacCT when I need to contact you you can have your SacCT automatically sent to your regular . Contact the Sac Link help desk if you need assistance with this. You will need to check SacCT after any day that you have missed class so that you can check the homework assignment and print copies of any handouts distributed in class that day. Failure to print available handouts or to complete the homework assignment will result in lowered participation points the next day in class. Conduct: Basic rules of appropriate conduct must be observed in class at all times. Anyone using inappropriate language or showing any type of rude behavior will be asked to leave. This includes treating others with disrespect, not being willing to work with a partner/group, chatting, wandering in and out of class, using a cell phone or laptop, etc. Always silence your cell phone before coming to class. Do not have the phone out during class. Do not use a laptop, ipod or other electronic device in class (unless you have my permission for special use in class). 5 else do your work, plagiarism, etc.) will result in an F on the assignment and may also result in a course grade of F.
