1 Principles of Mathematics 11 Online Course Outline Teacher: Ms. T. (Please see the following website regarding the Ministry of Education s calculator policy: Introduction: Welcome to Principles of Mathematics 11. This is an online course. The topics covered are: Unit 1: Linear Systems Unit 2: Function tation Unit 3: Quadratic Functions Unit 4: Solving Quadratic Equations Unit 5: Polynomials Unit 6: Solving Polynomial and Rational Equations & Inequalities Unit 7: Solving Radical and Absolute Value Inequalities Unit 8: Circle Geometry Unit 9: Coordinate Geometry Working online: Our primary learning environment will be an online environment. In the online environment, you will find lessons, assignments, discussion boards, calendar, chat rooms and other tools that will be used to help students learn the outcomes of the course and demonstrate their understanding. The course is designed to allow for flexibility along with an opportunity to be successful. Announcements and assignments will be posted on my SharePoint site: It is the student s responsibility to check-in at the Share Point site regularly. As well, there will also be access to the student s grades at the Engrade site, The student should check to ensure that all scores are correct and up-to-date. Many 1

2 students find that being an independent and autonomous learner is difficult and WILL TAKE DEDICATION. However, by the time courses are completed, students report feeling better prepared for future learning challenges. Our program has certain expectations about active participation in daily work expectations and online conferences. WE expect students to be involved without dominating discussions, be encouraging and kind to others. In addition, students will learn better by cooperating and collaborate with other students and plan on use their time effectively. Students should plan to work on assignments at a regular pace (on average 1-2 hours per day for each class). To log in our online course environment, you will need your login information, write it here for reference: Username: Password: Students must also register at the LearnwBC website: ( You will need your PEN number). PEN: Computer Requirements: Firefox or IE 6+, cookies and JavaScript enabled, pop-up blockers off, and java 1.5 installed. Click on Browser Checker if you are unsure and want more information. Online Tutorials: We will use the program Elluminate for our tutorials. The link for Elluminate and the tutorial times will be posted on my Sharepoint site. Please use this time for asking questions. Evaluation: Online Participation 10% Send-in Assignments 30% Exams (four module tests & one final exam) 60% Plagiarism and Cheating: Any students that plagiarize any portion of an assignment will receive a zero and a possible comment on their report card. The problem will also be referred to administration. For your own protection, keep all drafts of all work until the end of the school year. 3 Principles of Mathematics 11 Prescribed Learning Outcomes The following document is taken from : Systems of Equations and Inequalities: A1 graph linear inequalities, in two variables A2 solve systems of linear equations, in two variables: - algebraically (elimination and substitution) - graphically A3 solve systems of linear equations, in three variable: - algebraically -with a graphing calculator Quadratic Functions: A8 determine the characteristics of the graph of a quadratic function, including - vertex - domain and range -axis of symmetry -x- and y- intercepts A9 perform operations on functions and compositions of functions A10 determine the inverse of a function A11 connect algebraic and graphical transformations of quadratic functions, using completing the square as required A12 model real-world situations, using quadratic functions Polynomial and Rational Functions: A4 solve nonlinear equations - by factoring -graphically - with a graphing calculator A15 describe, graph, and analyse polynomial and rational functions, using a graphing calculator as appropriate Equations and Inequalities: A5 use the Remainder Theorem to evaluate polynomial expressions A6 use the Rational Zero Theorem and the Factor Theorem to determine factors of polynomials A7 determine the solution to a system of nonlinear equations, using a graphing calculator as appropriate A13 solve quadratic equations, and relate the solutions to the zeros of a corresponding quadratic function, using: - factoring -the quadratic formula - graphing A14 determine the character of the real and non-real roots of a quadratic equation, using -the discriminant in the quadratic formula - graphing A16 formulate and apply strategies to solve absolute value equations, radical equations, rational equations, and inequalities Properties of Angles and Chords: B3 investigate the following geometric circle properties using computers with dynamic geometry software, and prove them using established concepts and theorems: - the perpendicular bisector of a chord contains the centre of the circle - the measure of the central angle is equal to twice the measure of the inscribed angle subtended by the same arc - the inscribed angles subtended by the same arc are congruent - the angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle - the opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral are supplementary - a tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius at the point of tangency - the tangent segments to a circle, from any external point, are congruent - the angle between a tangent and a chord is equal to the inscribed angle on the opposite side of the chord 3
