3 1. Introduction The student chapter of the Society of Optics and Photonics from Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica A.C. located in León, Gto. México have the purpose of promote outreach events with the local community in different educations levels. This year our SPIE Chapter Officers was formed by our friends and colleagues Yolanda Yanet López Domínguez, Luz María García Encina, Jesus Pablo Lauterio Cruz, Belem Estafanía Mancilla Escobar and Orlando Medina Cazares. During 2014 we get several different activities involving the promotion of our SPIE Chapter, in outreach events and activities with our members supporting the CIO Cultural Club. We are very grateful to the support provided by our Academic Director Dr. Luis Armando Díaz Torres, our Chapter Advisor Dr. Oracio Barbosa and the CIO General Director Dr. Elder de la Rosa in all the events during the year.

Detailed Descriptions of the Events Below we describe the activities throughout the year, given the number of activities we have decided to group them into four groups: 3.1 First workshop: Build your own telescope The 2013 SPIE Chapter started the first workshop Build your own telescope. The idea of this workshop is to promote optics through astronomy. We know the importance of this activity for those members who are interested in astronomy, so in 2014, the members continued working in the construction of the Newtonian Telescope.

7 3.2. Activities with others SPIE Chapters Since the chapter of the CIO interacts with other chapters from Mexico and other parts of the world, below we describe the activities that comprise this category: a) 13 th Chapter Leadership Workshop in the SPIE Chapter Annual Meeting 2014 In the framework of SPIE Optics + Photonics 2014 Annual Conference held in San Diego California, the annual meeting of student chapters was performed. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange ideas, do workshops and share ideas to improve the way optics is promote internationally. Overall, student chapters participated from 37 countries like USA, India, Canada, Colombia, Argentina, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Malaysia, México, France, Japan, China and Korea to name a few. One of the workshops organized was focused on the effective formation of team works.

8 b) Optics Outreach Olympics in the SPIE Chapter Annual Meeting 2014 In the latest years, our chapter has been participating in one of the most important activity in the SPIE Chapter Annual Meeting. This activity is the contest called Optics Outreach Olympics. In this contest each chapter participated demonstrating an experiment of optics, and the CIO chapter was part of it, with the experiment named Laser projection microscope. The experiment consisted in a very simple low-cost device capable of showing the presence of microorganisms in a water sample. The apparatus is made of components easy to get and recycled materials, such as a laser pointer, a syringe and water. Even though the light projected from the device allows the viewers to see only the shadows of the objects suspended in a water droplet, the presence of some kind of microorganisms can be detected thanks to their autonomous movements. The device is also fun to use and might reinforce the hygienic habits in children, what can have a positive impact in their health.

10 c) Student Chapter Poster exhibition As a way to know other chapter activities and exchange ideas about outreach activities, a poster session is organized in the SPIE Chapter annual meeting. CIO Chapter participated and talk to other members around the world about our experience promoting Optics and exchange ideas in order to improve our activities.

Activities dedicated to our member s chapters a) 2014 SPIE Chapter Officers Elections The 2013 Chapter officers gave an introduction about the past chapter events and our chapter advisor Dr. Oracio Barbosa talked about the benefits of being a member of the chapter. With the participation of 25 of 39 active memberships, The 2014 Chapter Officers were elected. President Vice-President Treasurer Yolanda Yanet López Luz María García Encina Belem Estefania Mancilla Domínguez Escobar Secretary Jesus Pablo Lauterio Cruz Vocal Orlando Miguel Medina Cázares b) 2014 SPIE Chapter Officers Presentations The first activity of the chapter was the recruitment of new members as well as renewed memberships. In such event unveiled students the mission and vision of the SPIE chapter as well as the benefits of being part of SPIE, for example: The

12 annual scholarship application, discounts in registration conferences, travel grant applications etc. We presented our planned events for the A representative chapter shirt was presented to students who enrolled. To close the event, a pizza party was organized in order to integrate new members into the community and foster a friendly environment with the chapter members.

13 c) Bike ride Organized by the SPIE Student Chapter, the traditional bike ride was carried out during the 34 th Anniversary of the CIO. This trip included anew the round-trip tour of the city of León, Guanajuato to the city of Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco. As the last Anniversary, commemorative uniforms were made, including the CIO and SPIE logos. Researchers, students and staff of our Center participated in the route that was around 64 km. To carry out the bike ride, some physical training before the event was needed, including exercises in the gym. As always, for security, a couple of institutional vans accompanied the caravan with water and first aid kit.

15 d) Khet tournament Under the celebration of the 34 th Anniversary of our Research Center, the SPIE Student Chapter organized the Khet Tournament. Here, students and staff of our Center competed for a Khet Board Game as prize. Because many interested people in participating did not know the game nor had long time without practicing, several workshops were carried out in advance. Once completed, the matches were scheduled during some days, playing all against all as the first round. The winners passed to the second round and so on. In the end, the final was held on the anniversary of the CIO.

16 e) Recruitment and pizza party In order to add new members to CIO Student SPIE Chapter and renovate memberships, we organized two pizza parties along the year. On both parties, we gathered with students from Centro de Investigaciones en Optica and Division de Ciencias e Ingenierias from Universidad de Guanajuato. We explained them the activities that the chapter makes along the year such as the optics experiments, the bike ride and the Khet tournament. Meanwhile, the chapter offered them pizza and soda. A T-shirt with SPIE logo was given to the ones who become a chapter member. As a result, we recruited 15 new members and 6 renovations during the year.

17 f) Student recruitment and Christmas party As a recognition of the support received from the chapter members, it was organized a Christmas party exclusive for the members of the chapter. This event was accompanied by traditional Mexican meal for this time of the year (tamales

18 and atole) and the breaking of a piñata. With this activity the chapter also made a new recruiting and the renovation of some memberships Outreach Events. a) Workshops for medium and high school students As the last years, CIO Student chapter organized The High School and Optics Workshop. As a way to motivate the young students to get involved with science, local high schools were invited to CIO to take a tour and assist to workshops. The exhibitions of simple experiments were done and small talks about optical phenomena were given. Students interacted with experiments and demonstrations and learned about nature of light, using lenses, mirrors and holograms.

21 b) Second Optics experiments and photography contest One of the main goals of our chapter is the divulgation of the optics phenomena, trying to explain them to all the levels of education. With this purpose, it was organized the second optic's experiment contest. The principal idea was to motivate the involving of the chapter members and also regional students in diffusion activities, and to explain optical phenomena with easy-to-understand experiments. The contest had the participation of 9 projects under the next specifications: To demonstrate an optics basic concept; to develop simple experiments, without the need of a laboratory and the materials utilized have to be of easy access and preferably recycled ones.

23 The first places were: 3 rd place - Moiré Pattern: This effect is formed by the interference pattern when two grids are superimposed, forming white and dark fringes. This phenomenon can be observed in the everyday life. 2 nd Place Making objects invisible with liquids: In this experiment, it is shown how transparent objects can appear invisible in different liquids, using the property of the refraction of light. 1 st Place Laser projection microscope: The experiment consisted in a very simple low-cost device capable of showing the presence of microorganisms in a water sample. Prize apart, the winner experiment was used to participate In the Optics Outreach Games For the evaluation of the experiments, researchers and directives of CIO were invited. The presentation and awards where done accompanied by a small reception with all the assistants.

26 c) First Robotics Workshop The First Robotics Workshop, held from 5 to 7 November on the campus of CIO of Aguascalientes in the city of Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, was attended by nearly 90 students from 9 different Universities of the State. With support from the Government of Aguascalientes State (IDSCEA), the goal of the event was promote the master's degree in Optomechatronics of CIO, in order to solve problems of industrial sectors of the State, where automation and robotics vision play a crucial role. In this Robotics Workshop, college students of engineering in electronics, mechatronics, mechanical and systems, divided into 17 teams, armed and programmed a 4WD robot manipulator with 2 degrees of freedom through the Arduino platform to recognize a path of different colors by using an optical sensor. The prizes for the winning teams were three robots: one ROBOVIE-X (1st prize), one BIOLOID-CM530 (2nd) and two BIOLOID-STEM (3th). Besides, each 4WD armed robots was donated by the CIO to each participating University. The SPIE Student Chapter was present to support logistics, to promote the postgraduate programs of CIO, to publicize the SPIE Student Chapter, to collaborate in teaching workshops for visiting students and to spend a guided visit of the CIO-Aguascalientes Labs for all teachers who accompanied their students.
