Comprehensive Stress Management. 10 th ed. Boston: McGraw- Hill. (or earlier edition) Course Objectives 1. Understand the nature and causes of stress. 2. Examine individual responses to stress. 3. Explore techniques for managing stress. 4. Gain experience applying various techniques. 5. Foster personal growth and increase self-awareness. Course Components 1. Participation and Attendance (120 points) a. Because this course involves a great deal of experiential learning, your attendance to class is of great importance. Much of the learning for this class will take place in the classroom, and you will be expected to attend every session and actively participate in course activities. What you get out of this class is predominantly dependent on what you are willing to put into it. b. 90 of the 120 points are earned in a simple manner, BY ATTENDING CLASS! There are 21 class meetings (without counting holidays or quiz days). You are allowed 3 unexcused absence without penalty. Each class meeting will be worth 5 points (18 X 5= 90 points total). Only in extreme cases with documentation for the 3 days missed will exceptions be made. If you are present for every one of the 21 class meetings, you will receive an additional 15 points. Missed material cannot be made up. c. The remaining 30 points are earned by completing in-class assignments on material covered in class. d. Please be aware that all information covered in class discussions, lectures, videos, and guest speakers is testable. e. The instructor reserves the right to deduct points for lateness to class and leaving class early if these occur on a regular basis. f. Attendance sheets will be passed around at some point during each class period. g. Please bring text daily and complete readings prior to class! Be prepared to share at least one question or comment about the assigned reading as part of the class discussion. 2. Quizzes (160 points; 4 Exams 40 points each) a. You will be given four multiple-choice quizzes, worth 40 points each.

2 Page 2 b. There will be 40 questions on each quiz on all textbook material, lecture material, and group presentation material that has been covered, but tests are not cumulative. (You are responsible for getting any missed material on days you are absent!!) c. No make-up quizzes will be given unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor at least 24 hours in advance. 3. Journals (60 points; 4 journals 15 points each) a. You will turn in a total of four journals throughout the semester. Due dates are included in the course outline. Each journal is worth 15 points. b. Journals should be at least 1 page long. They should be typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point font. Include a cover page to protect confidentiality. Do NOT include name, course title, etc. on the one page of written journal or you will not receive full credit! c. Your journals should represent a good deal of effort and thoughtful sincere selfdisclosure. These journals provide you with the opportunity to learn more about yourself. They also provide the opportunity to reflect on what you have learned throughout the course. These are your reflections and NOT a summary of the chapter/class discussions. d. In your journals, identify routine and unique stressors for that week. Identify your physiological and psychological/mental responses to those stressors. How did you react? What techniques did you try from any or all of these areas: physical, emotional, cognitive, spiritual. How effective were they? How are you being affected by what you are being exposed to in class? Be specific. Give examples from your life. e. Five points will be deducted for every business day a journal is submitted late. Full credit will only be possible on assignments that are turned in by the end of the class period on the date the assignment is due. f. All information submitted in the journals will remain confidential. 4. Independent Stress Management Experience (40 points total) To apply the methods learned in class to help you in your lives, you must be able to identify resources within your community to help you manage stress effectively once this class has ended. Students are expected to take part in one independent stress management experience during the semester. Examples of possible stress management experiences include: yoga classes, t ai chi classes, massage, biofeedback, hypnotherapy, counseling, acupuncture, personal growth workshop, meditation group, etc. The only restriction placed on your choice of experience is that your experience must involve a trained practitioner. a. The practitioner must sign the form found in the Appendix C. The form must be turned in with your summary write-up. b. Students must turn in a two-page summary of their experience, including information about what they learned through the experience. This summary may be turned in at any time during the semester, but no later than the date indicated on the course schedule. 5. Final Reflection Paper (50 points) a. You will be expected to complete a final paper toward the end of class. This paper should be 3 to 4 pages long.

The following are possible topics to include in this paper. * How your understanding of stress has changed through the course. * How you were challenged by the course. * Ways you have grown through the course. * How you will handle stress in the future. * What you enjoyed most about the course. * What you enjoyed least about the course. * Self-knowledge gained. * How other students in the class have helped you grow personally. c. Please feel free to include any other important ideas you have toward class. This paper is designed to give you the opportunity to consider how you have grown in thinking about your own stress management and/or performance enhancement. d. The paper will be graded based upon the demonstrated knowledge of course materials, and your ability to incorporate these into your personal experience. e. See Appendix A for the evaluation form for this assignment. f. Five points will be deducted for every business day this paper is late. 5. Group Workshop (70 points) a. Within the first few days of class, you will be assigned a group that will be your primary discussion group throughout the semester. It is intended that you will learn from the experiences of the other members in your group, as well as share your own personal experiences to contribute to the learning of the group. b. Each group will prepare a minute lesson about their assigned topic. The format of these presentations should be experiential as well as instructional. Topics and groups will be randomly assigned. c. Each group is responsible for developing an outline/information sheet (at least one full page that includes references). Copies must be provided for each class member and the instructor. The handout should supplement and clarify, in your own words, the key points made during your experiential presentation. Each member will also be expected to EXPERIENCE the topic. For example, if your topic is meditation, each group member (either individually or together) will do a meditation exercise. You will be expected to include a description of what the experience was like both in your verbal presentation and on your handout. d. This assignment should encourage a creative and energetic communication of information. Although you should feel free to consult your text, you are expected to utilize and reference additional resources (minimum of 5), such as websites, books, professional interviews, journal articles, etc. You should be prepared to conduct a group activity or demonstration, and provide the class with audio and/or visual aides. This assignment should be fun interesting, and informative. Please see me if you are experiencing unnecessary anxiety! e. This assignment is meant to be a presentation, not standing and reading. Please understand that in order to give a presentation, you must be familiar enough with your topic to talk to the class, not read. It is NOT required that every group member speaks, but I cannot emphasize enough that you are expected to TALK, NOT READ your material. You are TEACHING the class about your topic!

4 Page 4 f. Students are strongly encouraged to use creativity and class involvement during their presentations. Class involvement is emphasized over the instructional material, so please focus on this aspect in your presentations. g. One member of your group needs to me your ideas for the experiential portion of your presentation. I need to O.K. this part before you present. h. me a copy of your power point presentation (if you choose to use power point). Due the same day you present. i. See Appendix B for grading criteria. Your grade will consist of evaluations from your other group members and the instructor. Grading Scale a. Use Appendix C to keep track of your grades. b. Keep your graded papers to document the grades you receive. Confidentiality Please respect the privacy and confidentiality of other students in this class. You may choose to discuss your own experiences with this course with anyone you choose. However, students should not discuss what other people say or do during class-related activities. 2. Office Hours (Subject to Change by Instructor) Students are invited to make use of the instructor s office hours for any questions or comments about the course or material that has been covered. If you cannot make it to the office hours, please let me know so we can set up an appointment. 4. Course Schedule What is provided in the syllabus is a tentative outline of course topics to be covered. Due to such situations as guest speaker availability, varying time for class activities, or other circumstances, certain changes may be made throughout the course. It is the responsibility of the instructor to give appropriate notice of such changes, and it is the student s responsibility to take note of these changes. 5. Make-up policy for work

5 Page 5 Make-up work must be pre-arranged with the instructor, and students must present documented evidence of any extenuating circumstances that may lead to the necessity for make-up work. 6. Cell phones Please make sure that you turn off all cell phones before class starts. 7. Electronic submission of class assignments Student assignments will NOT be accepted via without prior permission of the instructor for a specific assignment. Permission will be granted only in extreme circumstances. 8. Voluntary participation Students maintain the right to opt out of participating in activities related to stress management or performance enhancement techniques with which they are not comfortable. Students are asked to inform the instructor of their desire not to participate. In some cases, alternative assignments may be offered, and these will be determined by the instructor and student on an individual basis.
