4 Project 1 Food ad Taste as a Global Exploratio Backgroud Why do we eat? To stay alive, most certaily, but we also eat for ejoymet ad as a form of social cotact ad celebratio. May foods are made especially for holidays or other celebratios, as well as to provide comfort i sad times. Sharig meals is a global practice foud amog almost all people ad cultures of the world. Objectives Studets will develop a awareess of the diverse foods cosumed by childre worldwide. Studets will build a uderstadig of the coectio betwee food ad culture, ad of the evirometal factors that cotribute to this coectio. Studets will experiece productio ad cosumptio of multicultural gastroomy. Studets will uderstad that while there is substatial diversity i the form that food may take aroud the world, there are parallels i its fuctio that serve to uite childre worldwide.

I America ad Europea coutries, they are made of certai kids of cucumbers. Why did people start makig pickles? To preserve foods they grew durig the summer because there were o refrigerators. Today some people still must preserve food i this way i order to have food i cold moths whe gardes do t grow. Picklig is oe of may ways to preserve food, ad other foods besides cucumbers ca be pickled. Guidig Questios Ask the class to thik about differet pickled foods they kow of which could iclude the followig: Sauerkraut from Germay Kimchi from Korea Hot peppers from Mexico Carrots ad oios from Frace Olives from Italy Hotdog relish from America Classroom Activity Share assorted pickled foods with childre i the class ad let them decide which they like best. We kow people have created ad played music for more tha 40,000 years because a flute made from a cave bear boe was discovered from that aciet time. May musical istrumets ad kids of music have bee created sice the. For example, various types of guitars ad accordios are shared i may cultures aroud the world. Equally popular aroud the world are percussio istrumets to create beat ad rhythm ad iclude the followig types: sticks, rattles, bells, triagles, tambouries, drums. Objectives Studets will develop a uderstadig of the varied purposes for makig music, as well as a awareess of the messages that music ca covey.
