1 Week of October 31 November 4, 2016 October 31, 2016 Happy Halloween! A big THANK YOU to Sara, Kelly, Ann, Diana and Becky for planning and helping out at our party on Friday. It was the perfect amount of time with exciting activities to go along with it. The kids had a grand time at all of the stations. Hopefully most of you were able to get away to watch the parade. Happy Trick-or-Treating tonight. Our next party is Thursday, December 22. It will start after recess and conclude at the end of the day. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer for that party. November is Math Fluency month. This is a new activity this year. Please plan to spend forty minutes, per week, on a math fact activity. Initial the fluency calendar every time your child spends time ten minutes practicing. There is an informational letter coming home tomorrow with a calendar and a list of web sites and games that will help your child build math fluency. Second grade is focusing on addition through 12. Please let me know if you have any questions. Children who are proficient and hand in the calendar will bring home a Papa Murphy s certificate. November is also Movember. At the end of the month the kids will be able to purchase a mustache for $1.00. the money raised will be donated to prostate cancer research. The men in the building typically do not shave until December! Please send in clothing for the Vets if you get a chance. Every little bit helps the very men and women who have served in the armed services to keep our country free. Socks, underwear, shirts, pants, etc. are all appreciated. Thank you.
2 Keep those reading minutes coming! They are getting better each week. Thanks for sending back the reading homework each week. That gets counted and recorded on the Homework section of the report card. The kids love to use different voices at school! Thanks again for sending your child to school each and every morning ready to learn. This is a great group of kids and I feel fortunate to see them every day. Have a marvelous week. Sincerely, Toni Quote of the week: MATH LANGUAGE ARTS Anthology Teacher s Pets AR# Genre; Realistic Fiction Unit 3: Place Value, Money and Time Overview: Unit 3 continues the review and extension of topics introduced in first grade: numeration and place value, money, time and data collection and analysis. Ms Clifton Retake (for students who would like a better score) Lesson 1.5 words: Pretest Monday: if a student is able to spell the Basic List with 88% accuracy they will practice the Challenge list for the final test on Friday. Check the Assignment Sheet to determine which list they are supposed to study for the week. We have a Premium Membership with Spelling City. If your child would like to practice the words, using that program they may. If your child is stressed before the pre-test they may practice the words prior to the first test. Logging into Spelling City: Click the link in the box to the left. Once you get to Spelling City your child will need to log in to the student log-in. The user name is their last name. initial of first name with no spaces or uppercase letters (For example, my user name would be clifton.t. The password is their lunch number. Good luck! Let me know if you need assistance. Reading Log Assignment: Students are required to read a minimum of 20 minutes per day, outside of school. Please jot down the number of minutes read daily and write the total minutes per week when you send the folder back on Monday. Math homework: at this time the students will receive three to four Home links a week. They are due back the following week. IXL and other sites will be available online as an alternate to Home Links (predetermined by me). At this time Lesson 1.5 is posted on the Spelling City website. Spelling City is an excellent online program to study spelling words. It is interactive and provides definitions of the words, too.

Birthday Treats and Celebrations Healthy Snacks Sending a treat to school to celebrate birthdays is optional. All treats must be store bought and individually wrapped. If your child has a summer birthday we will celebrate their day during All About Me or any other agreed upon date! There are 24students, a para, and one teacher in our classroom. Snacks: Please send a healthy, non-messy snack to school for your child each day. Children are invited to bring a water bottle to school if desired, but soda, juices and other beverages are not allowed in our classroom. Thanks for your help! Shoes, layering for varied room temperature Shoes, etc.: Please help your child remember to have appropriate shoes. It is also a good idea to either send a sweater or a sweatshirt with your child each day, or have him/her keep one at school. Even during the cold weather, our classroom can be very chilly. I encourage layers of clothing! Please send warm clothes for the weather outside.
