1 Gifted/Challenge Program Descriptions Summer 2018 (Please note: Select courses that have your child s current grade for the 2017/2018 school year, please do NOT select courses for any other grade level.) Funded Courses Young Explorations This course is designed for students who will have completed Kindergarten in the school year. Take a tour with us through the wonderful world of learning as we preview the grade one curriculum by working with numbers, performing experiments, problem solving, and examining both fiction and non-fiction literature. Through tactile activities, students will develop their critical thinking skills and expand their understanding of mathematical concepts. We will explore numeracy, measurement, geometry, time, multiplication and division in an exciting and stimulating way. Come and learn in the exciting world of numbers! This creative writing course allows primary students to explore the functions and values of writing; to stimulate their imagination and creativity; and to encourage artistic expression. Students will also be exposed to a variety of literature genres such as fairytales, drama and poetry. ME13015 (Grades 1-3) 9:00-11:40 No Fee ME14015 (Grades 1-3) 12:20-3:00 No Fee STEM For Fun! Interested in the world around you? Wonder how things work or how they are built? In this actionpacked course, students will engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities. Each day, students will explore an aspect of STEM. Whether it be conducting a hands-on experiment, working with technology, building a structure or playing with numbers, students will be engaged in deep thinking and creating. ME13055 (Grades 1-3) 9:00-11:40 No Fee Gifted Communicators Self-control and confident communication are some of the most important skills for academic and later life success. Students who can control their impulses are better able to think about their answers before writing them down and they have enhanced critical thinking skills to solve problems. Through fun and interactive activities, students will focus on development, expressing thoughts and emotions effectively, assertive communication, self-esteem and building positive relationships with peers and adults. 2 Enriched Mathematics Want to look deeper into some of the concepts and challenges you will encounter in Grade 4 Mathematics and beyond? If yes, then this course is for you! This course will engage student learning by connecting mathematical ideas and concepts to everyday experiences and to other disciplines. Using a variety of math manipulatives, students will develop strategies to build their confidence in mental math and estimation, problem solving, and reasoning. Topics may include but are not limited to: arithmetic, data analysis, geometry, measurement, time and many more! ME13125 (Grade 3) 9:00-11:40 No Fee ME14125 (Grade 3) 12:20-3:00 No Fee Logic Lovers: Critical Thinking for Kids The exciting world of critical thinking will be introduced and explored through a variety of fun and challenging logic games and puzzles. Students will enjoy the chance to voice their opinions using minidebates to stimulate their growing arguments. In this fun and engaging course, students will learn the basics of communicating in a logical way. ME14075 (Grade 3) 12:20-3:00 No Fee Gifted Creative Writing Now is your chance to turn your ideas and inspirations into creative stories! Gifted learners will participate in writing exercises aimed at developing new skills, such as character development and story elements. In collaboration with their peers, students will write multiple short story drafts on a variety of topics, having the opportunity to identify strengths and weaknesses in their own writing. During the final week, students will work on refining and publishing some of their favourite writing pieces. ME13035 (Grades 4-5) 9:00-11:40 No Fee ME14035 (Grades 4-5) 12:20-3:00 No Fee Writing with a Purpose Intermediate students wishing to refine their writing skills will love this strategy-focused, interactive course. Students will be guided through each step of the writing process from selecting topics to publishing pieces. We will explore various genres through step-by-step lessons, organizational strategies, and activities emphasizing fluency and flow. Students will develop their self and peerevaluation skills using tools such as a writing rubric and checklist. Join us for an intensive writing challenge in a relaxed, supportive environment. ME13065 (Grades 4-5) 9:00-11:40 No Fee ME14065 (Grades 4-5) 12:20-3:00 No Fee Thought Detectives In this dynamic course, students will expand and develop their critical thinking skills using a variety of language-based logic challenges. They will analyze arguments posed by classmates and in the media, create a debate, identify fallacies, and design counter-arguments in order to expand and refine their own thinking. ME13075 (Grades 4-7) 9:00-11:40 No Fee Drama Time! This dynamic drama course for beginners will develop students' acting skills by first building a sense of community through confidence building exercises and games. Gifted learners will explore and experiment with expression, tableau, improv, word play, voice, and movement both collaboratively and independently. During the final week, students will prepare and act in a short play that will be chosen based on skill level and student interest. Parents will be invited to see the play in the auditorium! 3 Math Mysteries and Logic Students will be given the opportunity to strengthen their problem-solving powers as they explore intriguing mathematical mysteries, numerical puzzles, brainteasers, logical deduction challenges, board games, and geometric puzzles. Through games, hands-on activities, group challenges and puzzles, students will learn to work as a team to create problems for their classmates to solve! Gifted learners will develop their vocabulary, practice strong beginnings and satisfying endings, and finish the program with several examples of their own writing. In this fun and engaging cooking class, students will learn how to create and enjoy great food from around the world. Gifted chefs will also create crafts and art while learning about different cultures. Is your child a gifted learner interested in using math skills to construct and build? In this exciting course, students will look at different kinds of buildings created by humans, animals, and nature to see how math works to keep them together. Learners will develop their building skills using mathematic principles and construct structures of their own creation. Gifted Learners will work to create images that compare their own lives to fantastic other places from their imagination. Media include charcoal, pencil, paint, performance and more. 4 Be an Artsy Scientist! Discover the scientific processes while creating art masterpieces. Through art, students will examine living things, types of forces, the physical and chemical processes of matter and thermal energy, as well as solids, liquids and gases. Gifted learners will create marker chromatography, baking soda volcanoes, oil and water droplet paintings, plastic with milk and vinegar, motion marble paintings, a snowstorm through a jar and more! ME23125 (Grades 1-3) 9:00-11:40 $330 ME24125 (Grades 1-3) 12:20-3:00 $330 Sports Math! Most sports are filled with numbers and statistics. Through sports activities, students will review and practice basic operations, data collection, decimals, fractions, percentages and even probabilities. Math can be active and fun in a physical and safe learning environment! ME23025 (Grades 2-3) 9:00-11:40 $330 ME24025 (Grades 2-3) 12:20-3:00 $330 The Science of Flight and Rocketry Why do objects stay aloft in the sky? Whether they are living or non-living objects, the principles of flight remain the same. Explore and discover the history and origins of flight. Understand the physics of flight by designing and constructing kites, parachutes, gliders, self-propelled airplanes, bottle rockets and solid-fuel rockets. This course is a blast! Students will work in small teams to tackle increasingly challenging guided building projects and engineer their own robotic creations. Additional kits will introduce students to the use of solar and wind power to energize their machines. This course is all about developing your creativity and exploring your artistic expression. Students will discover design by using a range of processes, media, techniques and styles. 5 Web 2.0: Digital Tools for Beginners In this interactive class, you will learn how to create a website and use a variety of web and computerbased programs. With these tools, you will learn to present your understanding in fun, impactful ways. After this dynamic course, you will be able to show your classmates and your teacher that you can use digital tools to create a book report, a Social Studies project, or an animated Math assignment.
