1 Murray Messages April 11, 2016 RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE READY Dear MHMS Community, Principal s Message This morning, our incredibly talented students had the opportunity to perform in front of parents, faculty, and our entire student body. Prior to today, students that signed up to perform have been practicing and refining their performances as part of our After the Hill Program. Our student performances were amazing. Students danced, sang, played music, performed martial arts, and rapped. It was such a wonderful event. As Principal, I couldn t be prouder! 2 School News and Events: Murray Hill Music Boosters Invites YOU for a Night of Fun Please join us for a dinner and a night of fun! We are having our annual Family Night Gift Card Bingo on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 7:00pm at MHMS Cafeteria. Doors will open at 6:30pm. We will be selling pizza by the slice and concessions. Our Bingo games will begin at 7:00pm. You may also complete the pre- order form to reserve your spot. All proceeds go directly to our band, chorus, drama and orchestra. We hope to see you there!!! MHMS PTA Seeking Board Members for School Year The Murray Hill PTA is seeking people in the community to serve on the Executive Board. All positions are open. It is important that we get the support from the community. An active PTA is vital to the partnership with the school. We don't want to lose momentum. 4 HCPSS News Summer School Catalog HCPSS presents a number of learning experiences and educational opportunities through summer programs and classes. The 2016 Summer Classes and Camps course information is now available. Instructional Materials on Display March 29 April 18, various locations and times Instructional materials recommended for the first time will be on display for citizen review. Appropriate forms will be available to express approval or to request reevaluation of any of the proposed instructional materials. Spring Student Exhibition at The Mall in Columbia Through April 20, Mall in Columbia The 44 th Annual K 12 Spring Exhibition features hundreds of drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, collages, 3D pieces and more from each HCPSS comprehensive visual arts program. University of Maryland Stepping Stones to Your Future (SSTYF) summer camp. This week- long coed commuter camp is for rising 7th & 8th graders who are interested in learning more about engineering. Each day is filled with a variety of fun hands- on activities and engineering challenges. There are two weeks to choose from: Session 1 July or Session 2 July To apply, we require an online form and a teacher recommendation from a current math or science teacher. Programs will include classes in Architectural Design, Visual Communication/Graphic Design, Culinary Science, Automotive Technology, Biotechnology, Construction Management and Engineering. Location Applications and Research Lab (ARL) Dates Times 9 am-3 pm No transportation or meals provided. Students must bring a bagged lunch. Registration By mail; see for application. Must be postmarked by June 1, 2016 Tuition $150 per student Before and After Care Before and after care will be offered from 8-9 am morning or afternoon session OR $50 for both sessions. Tuition Reduction and Scholarships Students may apply for either tuition reduction or scholarships. Application forms may be found online at An initial payment of no more than 50 percent of the course fee is required at the time of registration. Balance owed is pending review by the Scholarship Committee. The Scholarship Committee will review the application and notify parents/guardians regarding any gaps in information. Students will create a character concept art using 2D computer illustration software, use 3D graphics to create a game level, design related logos and packaging, explore game levels using a first person character, and 3D print a game object (time permitting). GG01.E1 Date: Cost: $150 Let s Get Cooking: Chef s Institute Students will hone their knife skills and food preparation techniques while creating dishes to impress family and friends. Food and kitchen safety, sanitation, and good nutrition will be emphasized. GG01.E2 Date: Cost: $150 A Dive Into Design Students will gain an appreciation for architecture and related fields by creating shapes, forms, and structures using hands-onmodel building and 3-D software. GG01.E3 Date: Cost: $150 Building for The Future Students will learn construction skills and methods that are used for Habitat for Humanity and other community volunteer construction projects. GG01.E4 Date: Cost: $150 CyberSTEM Institute Students will learn to apply basic security concepts through gaming, modeling and simulation development, while investigating exciting careers and engaging in hands on activities related to cryptography, system vulnerabilities, computational logic and digital forensics. GG01.E5 Date: Cost: $150 Cyber Defense Training Entering Grades Credit Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of cybersecurity. It is an intermediate level program for high school students. Technical experience is recommended, including networking, Cisco Academy, and/or Java programming. GG01.E6 Date: Cost: $150 Analyze, Design, Build Students will learn the engineering design process and apply this methodical approach to solving real world problems while using a variety of technology including a 3D printer. GG01.E7 Date: Cost: $150 Discovering, Diagnosing, and Treating Medical Conditions Students will explore how biotechnology is applied in modern research and medicine to undercover the biological causes of illness, diagnose diseases, and develop drug therapies. This hands-on camp is lab intensive and includes a rat dissection.
