3 Guidelines Fr Reprting Back t Manager After DISC 1 n 1 s with Manager s Team Members Meeting with Manager Prir t 1 n 1 s with Team Members -Review Prcess with Manager. Yu meet with them, debrief their DISC, discuss their Teambuilding Objectives, review what yu ll be cvering in the 1 n 1 s (reinfrcing, it is similar t what yu just did with their DISC Graphs), and then yu will meet with the Manager fr apprx. 30 t 45 minutes t review verall Team DISC results. State yur intent is t always, shw hw the DISC will help their Team members with their cmmunicatins amngst themselves and their internal custmers. -Again Essential t debrief Manager s DISC prir t cnducting any f the 1 n 1 s with the Team Members. (The Manager will feel mre secure knwing what yu are ging t discuss with their emplyees. Best way t tell them is t mdel it debrief the Manager s Reprt Use Caching Agenda. And.. yes I ask Managers t cmplete page 8, The Summary Page. I want them t knw very clearly what I am fcusing n.) -While yu are debriefing the Manager n their DISC, listen t the Manager s cmments. These cmments well help be yu determine what the Manager s real training bjectives are. -Once dne with debriefing the Manager s graphs, ask the Manager what they want the DISC Team Building t accmplish? (Often will just tell yu they want a better team. This can get a bit tricky, but, yu d want t knw if smething recently happened that is inspiring this team building t happen nw, rather than later. Just listen, take ntes. Encurage yu nt t engage in becming their cnfidant r allw them t just dump n yu all their emplyee issues. One way t get at this, is by asking them wh are their stars & why & wh are the nes that need the mst cmmunicatin s develpment & why. Yu want this infrmatin s Yu are better prepared in knwing what pssible resistance yu may experience whether in a 1 n 1 r in the team sessin. Yu will als want t tactfully pair-up thse flks that are having cnflicts (& d the Pair & Share Learning Activity Page 8 in the DISC Reprt.) Review with them this is a cmmunicatin style assessment, intended t help their team members cmmunicate better with ne anther & their internal custmers. And yu will use the DISC t help prvide additinal cmmunicatin strategies t their staff. But, it will be imprtant fr them t remember this is NOT a skill assessment. (Yu are setting the stage s they will Get IT. Yu re nt ging t be put n the ht-seat t give yur pinin regarding smene s perfrmance.) -End meeting stating yu appreciate the fact that the Manager is setting their Team Building Training up fr ptimum success, by supprting the 30 minute 1 n 1 s with each f their Team Members. 4 Guidelines Meeting with Manager After the 1 n 1 s with Team Members -Thank them again fr setting their Team Building up fr success by encuraging the 1 n 1 s. Repeat yur understanding f their bjective. If they start t dump n yu all their emplyee prblems, listen fr a few mments & then say Let s see hw the DISC might help yur Team members with their cmmunicatins. -Prvide them with printed Overview f the Team s DISC Styles. (This Grup Breakdwn Overview is the main fcus f yur Reprt Back Meeting with the Manager.) -If yu knw what the basic respnsibilities are f the team, ffer yur insights as t why it makes sense they have.. the breakdwn they d fr example.. Supprt Team will have mstly S s. If yu dn t knw the respnsibilities, (hpefully yu gt sme additinal insight during yur first Debrief Sessin with the Manager, but if yu re nt cmfrtable nr des it seem evident t yu) ask them Nw that yu have a better understanding f the DISC Mdel, des it make sense that yu have this kind f DISC Style breakdwn fr yur team? Ask them if the DISC styles nw identified in their Team, makes sense based n the Team s respnsibilities. If they ask yu abut wh is better fr what kind f jb A general rule f thumb The jbs that require mre assertiveness typically attract the D s. The jbs that require a lt f peple face r ver the phne interactin are mre likely t be the I s. The jbs that are fcused n supprting thers, mre apt t be S s. The jbs that require a lt f details & analysis, mre apt t be C s. Discuss the pssible cnflict pints D s with S s & I s with C s. (Referring t Page 23, the 4 Quadrants, titled Actin Plans with all Fur Styles. -Prvide them with the Graph II s cmpiled f their Team. Review hw it is sequenced based n D s, then. I s Tell them this is just mre specific details the Overview Grup Breakdwn is the ne that is mst helpful when it cmes t Team dynamics & cmmunicatin challenges. (Dn t drag yurself & them thrugh each persn s Graph II s. If they ask abut smene specific, fine prvide brief, very factual explanatin.) Dn t ffer pinin as t what kind f emplyee they might be gd, bad r (Have print ut f each persn s Graphs Page 5 f their reprt. S, if it makes sense, yu can prvide insight re: smene s Graph II and their Graph I. But, I wuld nt encurage it. Easy t get a lt f time sucked int explaining & yu run ut f time t handle yur key bjectives fr the meeting. -If Manager tries t manipulate yu int giving yur pinin as t whether smene is a gd emplyee r nt Nicely remind them DISC is a style preference assessment, nt a perfrmance assessment. -If they keep pushing fr yu t use DISC t substantiate why smene is their prblem emplyee, kindly listen fr a few f their sentences & then ffer I can help yu package a cmmunicatin s the emplyee is mre apt t be receptive if yu like. -Let them knw there is practical help t help them THE MANAGER..t reinfrce the DISC with their team, all team members will receive DISC Tips (if they wuld like), & yu ll be cmpiling a simple Team DISC Tips Sheet fr all t refer t after the training. This has everyne s Natural Style & at least 1 tip they want thers t be aware f. -Clse with asking Manger t kick ff the Team Building as t why this is imprtant & that they need t clse the Team Building with reviewing hw the DISC will be reinfrced. 12 Applying yur Peple Skills Many f us grew up firmly believing in the wisdm f treating thers the way yu wuld like t be treated. We fndly called it The Glden Rule. We sn realized that a far mre practical rule prevails: Treat thers they way they want t be treated. That s The Platinum Rule that yu will learn mre abut in the DISC Team Wrkshp. Thank abut yur interactins every day. Have yu succeeded spectacularly with ne persn, nly t hpelessly miss the mark cmpletely with anther? We all have at ne time and we prbably try t shrug it ff thinking, That s just the way it is. Hwever, things dn t have t be that way. Nearly everyne acts in the wrkplace with his r her wn preferred style f behavir. Nne is inherently better than thers. When styles are in synch. thers are mre receptive t what we say r what we want. But when styles are ut f synch, cnfusin and frustratin can harm the relatinship. In this wrkshp yu will learn abut yur cmmunicatin style and hw that style impacts the success f everyne in yur wrk unit and wherever yu interact with thers. Fur distinct behaviral styles (with dzens f variatins) will be identified and demnstrated with special emphasis n the psitive attributes as well as areas f imprvement fr each. Why is it that my intentins are misunderstd by my cwrkers? Why am I the nly ne wh checks details carefully? Why desn t my cwrker get excited abut wrk challenges like I d? Hw can I get thers t take my ideas seriusly? In what envirnment and under what circumstances d I perfrm at my best? Hw can I adapt my wrk behavir s that I can mve prductively thrugh cnflict? Tlerance and acceptance f the different styles naturally leads t pening lines f cmmunicatin and cperatin amng cwrkers, ther departments, clleagues, students, ptential and existing dnr/investrs and ther interpersnal relatinships. There is nt ne style that is better than anther. We have all fur styles and use each r a cmbinatin f the styles depending n ur preferences, perceptins f what we think thers expect and ur envirnment. Step 1- Be reflective and plan-ful as a manager Take time, as a manager t think abut yur team and relate yur awareness abut DISC t the team style dynamics and the wrk yu d. Review yur team breakdwn graph D yu have a cncentratin f a certain style n the team? Or multiple styles? Hw is this cncentratin helpful? What ther styles d yu need mre f n the team? Hw wuld that benefit the team? Wh has secndary styles that shuld be leveraged mre? Wh has a style that is needed and wuld add balance and new value t the team and the wrk? Hw will yu encurage and prmte the best in all styles with yur team and with individuals? Think abut hw what yu gained frm the DISC experience and learning can be applied t the team and yur interactins with yur team Is yur style wrking fr yur team? Where can yu flex? Speed up r slw dwn yur pace? Address wrk frm a different pririty (peple r task)? Be prepared t share this reflectin with yur teams Step 2 - Create fllw up pprtunities with individuals and as a team Share and Cllect DISCstyles summary infrmatin Set cntext and share yur expectatins and plans with yur team (r individually) Explain yur cmmitment t leading and reinfrcing effective cmmunicatin fr the team-- Key set up pint--cmmunicatin is a tw-way prcess and yur interest in their DISCstyles summary is t enhance wrking relatinships and increase effectiveness with all cmmunicatin.
