Level 1 (online textbook) Así leemos! Materials Required for Class: Textbooks, pen/pencil and paper, flashcards for vocabulary homework. In addition you will need an 11/2 inch 3 ring binder for your class notebook. You need divisions in the following order: Class notes, Vocabulary lists printed out online, Handouts (supplemental materials), Prayers/Songs. Course Description and Objective Spanish I Honors is an advanced beginner course for students who have taken at least a year of Spanish in junior high, and who have passed the SMCHS placement exam. The course consists of dialogues, reading, questions, written exercises, tests, oral presentations, culture and literature. Spanish is spoken by the instructor for the majority of this class; however, grammar and more technical explanations may take place in English. Each chapter in the text should require approximately two weeks of study. Regular vocabulary and grammar quizzes and chapter tests are given to ascertain that the students are learning the material. Students will also be assigned homework to practice structures and vocabulary learned in class. The students are encouraged to immerse themselves in language study by reviewing past chapters, listen to Spanish speaking radio stations, and practice grammar on textbook website.

2 Course Outline: Sample outline for one chapter (2-3 weeks of study): Grammar and vocabulary practice in each book and online. Vocabulary quiz Grammar quiz Chapter test Listening comprehension practice in class, at home, and at the language laboratory. Homework is posted on our website: under instructor s name. Please note that the instructor may change assignments or due dates. Online homework can be accessed on Homework is due on due date by midnight (when submitting online.) Capítulo 1: Grammar: Artciles, adjectives, ser, and tú vs. Usted. Vocabulary: describing people, classes, courses, school subjects, nationalities. Cultural readings Amigos Latinos en E.E.U.U. Capítulo 2: Grammar: tener and possessive adjectives. Vocabulary: describing family members and discussing housing. Cultural Reading: Ecuadorian Family. Capítulo 3: Grammar: verbs ir, dar, estar and ar verbs, personal a, contractions a and el. Vocabulary: school activities, school supplies, clothing, shopping. Cultural Reading: Schools in Latin America. Capítulo 4: Grammar: -er, -ir verbs and ver. Expressions with the infinitive. Vocabulary: meals, foods, drinks. Cultural reading: Food in other places. Capítulo 5: Grammar: stem-changing verbs, verbs like gustar, interesar, aburrir. Vocabulary: sports and colors. Cultural reading: Team sports. Capítulo 6: Grammar: Ser and Estar, direct and indirect object pronouns. Vocabulary: emotions, feelings, behavior, health. Cultural Reading: El periquillo sarniento Capítulo 7:Grammar: Preterite of ar verbs and ser/ir. Direct object pronouns,(lo, la, los, las) Vocabulary: weather, summer and winter activities. Cultural reading: A day in a beach in Spain. Capítulo 8: Grammar: Preterite er and ir verbs, dar, ver, leer, creer. Affirmative and negative words. Vocabulary: describing a concert, museum visit, movies, partycultural reading: A day of Latin-American Culture. Capítulo 9: Grammar: Saber vs. conocer, superlatives and demonstratives. Vocabulary: clothes and food. Cultural reading: Indigenous Market.

3 Capítulo 10: Grammar: -go verbs and present progressive. Vocabulary: airports. Cultural reading: Airplanes in South America. Capítulo 11: Grammar: reflexives, stem-change with reflexives, favor de Vocabulary: daily activites/grooming, parts of the body, camping. Cultural reading: Backpacking. Grading: Attendance, course assignments, active class participation, homework, oral presentations, announced and unannounced quizzes, and written and oral examinations will be used to determine students knowledge and language proficiency according to the content standards of this course. 1. CLASSROOM POLICIES: In order to exhibit the proper courtesy and respect for others, the following rules will be in place: 1. Students are required to be in their seats and ready to begin class before the second bell rings. Students must refrain from talking/finishing homework during announcements. 2. An unexcused tardy will result in a deduction of 2 participation points. 3. The instructor, not the bell, will signal when class is over. Please be courteous and remain in your seats until you are dismissed. 4. Students will bring all necessary materials to class every day. Failure to bring materials to class will result in a deduction of 2 participation points. 5. Students who disrupt the class are infringing on the ability of their peers to be successful, and more importantly are not exhibiting the Christian value calling for being selfless rather than selfish. One warning will be given by the instructor. If the disruptive behavior continues, both the parents and the Dean s office will be asked to step in and address the issue. Any further disruption will unfortunately earn the student a referral. 6. The use of cell phones and ipods are not part of our daily material requirements, are disruptive, and are a temptation to be discourteous and are never permitted in class. Unfortunately, this will result in immediate confiscation of above stated objects, a Dean s detention, and irate parents having to come to school to retrieve them. 7. Students should speak Spanish in the classroom most of the time!

4 1. Students are encouraged to use the bathrooms during passing periods and breaks. 3 bathroom passes will be given for the semester. Misplaced bathroom passes and homework passes will not be replaced, take care of them they are your responsibility. 2. Academic/behavioral/dress code policies will be in accordance with the SMHS student handbook. 3. Chewing gum in class will result in a 2 point deduction of participation points. 4. Since learning another language is a step-by-step process, students should make every effort to attend class faithfully and review each evening what was taught that day. 5. All homework must be completed prior to entering the classroom. Zero credit will be given for incomplete homework, unless there are unforeseen circumstances (i.e. illness, etc.), or an excused absence. 6. Students are not allowed to go to their locker and retrieve assignments. 7. All work and homework must be done by the student and not copied from another student or source. Plagiarized work will receive zero credit. If a student allows another student to copy his/her work, both students will receive a zero for this assignment. 8. Group work will be graded individually. Each student must take equal parts of group projects. 9. Make-up work: You will get 3 homework passes (Pase de Tarea) each semester. No late homework is accepted, unless it is an excused absence (i.e. illness). Please note that homework passes cannot be used for compositions and projects. Make-up work/projects for an excused absence are to be handed to the instructor after the amount of days missed. If a student misses an exam/quiz, he or she must make arrangements with the instructor to take it after the amount of days missed. After that, the students will receive no credit on the missed exam/quiz. It is the student s responsibility to contact the teacher to make an arrangement to take the exam or quiz. 10. ASP students who plan on taking a major test in the ASP testing center must inform the instructor two days prior to the day of the test. Quizzes will be taken in class with ASP directives applied on a case-by-case basis. Homework due the day of the test will be handed in at the testing center. 11. Students at SMCHS must have a 2.0 total GPA in the most recent grading period to be eligible for participation in athletics or specified activities. At semester, the semester grades will be used to determine eligibility. (See student handbook). 12. Students should also refer to SMCHS handbook regarding the enforcement of all school policies. Students who show blatant disrespect or challenging behavior to a teacher may be removed from that class for the remainder of the year. The final decision will be made by the Dean's Office and the Academic Office. 13. For struggling students, the World Language Department has implemented an intervention policy. Please see your instructor as needed.
