1 4th Grade Dunlap Detectives Newsletter January 10, 2011 Social Studies Field Trip Soon, we will go on a field trip to the San Juan Bautista Mission. Thank you, parents who have signed up to be chaperones for this special day. It will be a great way to see some of the historical artifacts we are learning about in our study of California history. Math Fractions and decimal concepts are the skills of Topic 11 this week. If your child needs extra help with the basics of fractions and you are interested in spending a few minutes after school, let me know. I am willing to have an after-school math review if you and your child attend together. As always, use the envision website with your child s username and password to reinforce math skills. Other math links for fraction and decimal practice: and New Year Resolutions and Language Arts The children had fun using a multi-focus thinking map for their New Year Resolutions. Check out our bulletin board on which they are prominently displayed. We will use thinking maps as we hone our skills for responding to literature. Look for information and homework assignments regarding this skill and reading genre. Historical fiction is another genre about which we are reading. An upcoming fun project will be when each child selects a historical fiction book, prepares a speech about the main character, dresses in costume, and makes a presentation to the class. Your child may select his/her book now, although the selections must be approved by the teacher. Grades will be based upon the oral presentation speech. Impact of Spanish Missions on California Native Americans Research Project As we study the Spanish era in California history, we will focus on the impact of mission life on Native Americans in California. Each student has selected a specific mission, as shown on the attached chart. They will conduct research about it and organize the information on a double-frame, using a tree thinking map to organize their notes, or other product that would include the same information. Tech Assistance Welcome Please join us any Wednesday from 2:09-2:59, in the Computer Lab. We could use extra help, especially during research projects. Thank you for supporting our learning! 2 CALIFORNIA MISSIONS RESEARCH PROJECT INFORMATION SHEET Here are guidelines for this research project. The due date is on or before Friday, January 28, Students are responsible for checking out two non-fiction books on the mission he/she has been assigned. It is important that this be done as soon as possible. At school, students will have access to resources to help them with this project: printed resources (books; pertinent articles) and a computer. 2. Students may work on this project at home, although class time has been allocated for most of the work to be done at school. Your encouragement and support is vital to a successful product. 3. Please carefully review the attached resources that are provided to help your child with this research project. 4. Be sure to read the mission project rubric carefully. The depth of the information found and the degree of effort will be factors in the grade earned by each student. 5. Students may prepare products other than a double frame for this research project, provided the product includes all of the required components listed in the attached resources.
