Main educational aims of the programme C3D3 Biosciences (QAA /07) June 2011 An appreciation of animal life and animal behaviour is often a fundamental entry point for students to become motivated to learn about bioscience and from there to develop a lifelong interest in science and to explore the possibilities of personally rewarding careers in research, conservation and animal welfare. The programme aims to motivate students to explore their interests in charismatic animals and their behaviour, through field trips, studentled directed learning and traditional lecture, tutorial and practical sessions. Through modules in evolution, behaviour, ecology and organismal diversity, students will be encouraged to appreciate the importance of evolutionary theory, the scientific method, statistical analysis and modern molecular techniques which will provide a sound basis for appreciation of natural sciences in general and open the possibilities of a wider variety of career pathways in the biosciences.

Knowledge and understanding 1. Graduates will have an appreciation of a substantial body of fact and theory in biology with a special focus on animal behaviour, evolutionary theory, feeding, avoidance of predation, aggression, mating, parental care and habitat use. Subject-specific skills 2. Graduates will acquire comprehensive knowledge about animal behaviour. 3. Graduates will have appreciation of how to observe record, collate, analyse and present data collected in the field or laboratory with special emphasis on the behaviour of animals. Cognitive skills 4. Graduates will demonstrate the ability to critically analyze, interpret, evaluate and report hypothesis-driven research and its outputs. 5. Graduates should be able to communicate complex scientific concepts and outputs to an expert as well as to a lay audience. Key skills 6. Graduates will gain transferrable employability skills in writing, sourcing information, presentation, numeracy, statistics, problem solving and team work. BTEC Extended Diploma: 280 points Mature students/access graduates will be considered on individual merit Assessment for transition into Master at end of year 2. Students must achieve 60% or higher. This applies for those who have applied for the 4 year Master and for those who want to transfer from BSc (Hons) degrees. 12. Student employability & career opportunities. IELTS: overall 6.0 or higher, no individual component below 5.5 While this course is not primarily vocational, it provides key transferrable, life and employability skills. We provide opportunities for students to take modules in Science, Society and Employability and to undertake Work Placements in 2 nd year or to carry out their 3 rd year projects with external organisations. Suitable career opportunities exist in conservation organisations, zoos and in postgraduate study and research. 9
