This class is a general introduction to the principles of human and animal behavior. Topics to be covered include Personality, Learning, Therapy, Human Development, Attention, and Memory. Emphasis is placed upon the relationship between General Principles and Practical Application in Human Interaction. Required Materials: 1) Psychology in Action (10 TH ed.) and the Study Guide by Huffman (used textbook ok, used Study Guide NOT!) 2) PSYK.TREK 3.0 (2.0 will be okay) Wayne Weiten, Multi-Media CD (some library rentals available) Course Objectives: 1. Provide an overview of psychology, including definitions, history, the 5 major perspectives, ethics, and state of contemporary psychology. (See Ch.1) 2. Understand psychological research and evaluate the quality of research; and, the meaningfulness of results. (See Ch.1) 3. Learn the biological basis for behavior including the brain and nervous system. (See Ch.2) 4. Learn the importance of sleep and dreaming to good psychological health. (See Ch. 5) 5. Understand the importance of environmental influences, through various conditioning and learning situations. (See Ch. 6) 6. Understand the way in which our memory functions. (See Ch. 7) 7. Learn about child development and major approaches to understanding life span development. (See Ch. 9 & 10) 8. Understand the psychological concepts of frustration, conflict, stress, and defense. (See Ch. 3) 9. Learn about human sexuality and the importance of the concept of gender. ( See Ch. 11) 10. Become familiar with some of the definitions of intelligence and the difficulties in using this concept. (See Ch. 8) 11. Become familiar with the major theories of personality and some of the ways personality traits are defined and measured. (See Ch. 13) 12. Be able to define psychopathology & become familiar with the major types of disorders. (See Ch. 14) 13. Become familiar with the major types of psychotherapy. (See Ch. 15) 14. Understand the powerful influence of group dynamics and social settings. (See Ch. 16) *CH 3,4,5,8 as per individual study

3 Your Goals for this Course: Please list the learning goals you would like to accomplish in taking this course Teaching Method: In this class you will encounter a mix of reading, lecture, multi-media presentations and class discussion. My teaching method is highly interactive. Therefore I encourage, support and expect class participation, questions and debates. The reading assignments and lectures support each other. In-class exercises and activities contribute to active learning and critical thinking. Therefore, attendance and participation in the group learning activities are extremely important and will affect your grade. Attendance Credit: You will earn 5 points for each class fully attended and 0 points for each class missed. 0 classes missed = 10 Extra Credit Bonus Points Attendance Debit: 1 2 class missed = 0 debit 3-6 classes missed = deduct 5 points (each class) 7 or more missed = you flunk the class. Name Tag missing deducts 2 points. In case of serious, prolonged illness or family crisis, please contact me immediately for arrangements on a case-bycase basis. If you arrive more than 10 minutes after the start of a class you will lose 2.5 attendance points for the class. If you have a medical emergency beyond your 2 absence you still earn half attendance credit (2.5 points) for a maximum of ONE day only IF you submit a doctor s letter. You are responsible for conduct that supports your learning and that of your fellow students. Behavior that disrupts the learning environment shall be restricted at instructor's discretion. Warning shall be given prior to disciplinary action. Cell phones: If your equipment beeps during class it will cost you 2 minus points off your extra credit category for the first time. During a quiz or exam it will cost you 3 minus points. CELL PHONE GARAGE The student agrees that cell phones must be in the CELL PHONE GARAGE during the entire class period, except for official breaks. Leaving the class to go to the restroom does not constitute a break. If the student is seen with a cell phone outside the garage during class-time, his or her course grade will drop by 1 FULL GRADE for EACH occasion.

These quizzes will be taken online. They assist you in preparing for class discussion and unit exams. They also provide you with immediate feedback and distributed practice. If you don t take the quiz during the time it is posted you loose your chance to take it later. NO QUIZ MAKEUP S! Grade Weight: 20% of your grade Exams: Three multiple-choice exams will be given during the quarter. If you miss the time availability window for one of the three exams you should take the OPTIONAL COMPREHENSIVE FINAL (Covering Chapters 2, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 16). Those who did take the first three exams may also choose to take the Final. You cannot worsen your GPA as we will only count your three highest exam grades. Again, missing the time availability window of the posted exam is a non-recoverable decision that will adversely affect your grade so be sure to note the exam dates on the calendar page of this syllabus! Grade Weight: 50% of your grade Active Learning: A total of 100 points can come from class attendance and participation. To receive full credit for active learning you must attend and participate in each class for the entire length of time. Active Learning consists of the following components: Attendance (20%) Class Participation (10%). Grade Weight: 30% of your grade Extra Credit: You Can Earn up to 10 Extra Credit Points Your Extra Credit paper will be 4 to 6 pages (1500 WORDS) in 1 margins 11 to 12 point font typed double-spaced unless other wised specified. Your EC Paper is worth up to 10 points. You MUST submit EC BY HANDING IT INTO ME IN CLASS before the deadline. The Extra Credit Deadline is 11:55 PM on November 28 th! Be sure to read my Plagiarism Policy!

5 Plagiarism Policy You are responsible for submitting original work. Any evidence of plagiarism or cheating may be grounds for disciplinary action including flunking the class with or without further notice! See the current edition of the Pierce College Catalog under Academic Dishonesty. You should assume as a matter of course that your instructor is HIGHLY familiar with any documents regarding the psychology related articles available on the web. Don t take a chance using those. You should also assume that you cannot copy or closely re-write a student s WA posting and then re-post it as your own. Only your original work can be submitted! ALERT: We use Plagiarism Detecting Software! Policy Because I teach multiple courses on campus as well as online courses keeping my student s straight is both very challenging and VERY IMPORTANT. Please assist me in this by observing the following points: The Course Mail section functions like most other programs: it enables you to exchange messages with other ANGEL users. The Course Mail section contains the following three options: View Inbox opens the Course Mail application and shows all the messages in your inbox. Quick Message lets you bypass the inbox and start composing a message. Unread Messages displays a count of unread messages in your inbox. When Sending Me an 1) Because of the huge virus situation I rarely open s with attachments. Whenever possible, simply paste the information contained into the BODY of the actual . You may lose some formatting information but it is almost always still very readable. 2) Don t send me multiple s in a single day. If I haven t responded to your original within 48 hours, do send me a gentle reminder. 3) Please include your cell phone number when ing me. Most of the time, I will you back but sometimes there is an urgent situation or a need for clarification. By including your cell-phone number in the message you will save me a fair bit of time. How to Forward Course Mail By default, users must log into ANGEL to send or read course mail messages. You can optionally configure ANGEL s course mail forwarding settings to automatically forward course mail to an Internet address. Course mail forwarding is a global setting. Therefore, enabling course mail forwarding forwards all course mail messages received in any course or group for which you are enrolled. To forward your ANGEL course mail to an Internet account: 1. Log into ANGEL and click the Personal Settings icon ( ) in Power Strip. The Preferences page appears. 2. Click System Settings in the General User Settings area. The System Settings page appears. 3. Locate the Mail Settings area, click the Forwarding Address field, and type the full address where your ANGEL mail should be sent. 4. Click the Forwarding Mode drop-down list and select the forwarding mode of your choice. 5. Click the Save button. Support System Students from all levels of ability are welcome in my class. 6 CLASS CODE OF CONDUCT PSYC&100: Monday/ Wednesday Fall 2012 All parts of this syllabus have been sorted by one principle: Will it help each student succeed? If the answer is yes, I put it into my syllabus. Many of the entries in this category have come from suggestions from previous students in this class: 1. CONFIDENTIALITY I encourage and expect active student participation in my classes. Along with that comes the expectation that personal comments by students in the classroom stay in the classroom. So please make this a strong commitment 2. Missed Exam Be aware that the single worst choice you can make is to miss an exam day without prior arrangements with the instructor. It will result in a drop of your grade by one sometimes even two-grade points. So please, don t do this to yourself! 3. Attendance Classroom attendance is required. I strongly urge YOU to keep a copy of what you are submitting in case the original is lost. Consent Agreement This college course requires frequent interaction with your instructor. It is, therefore, essential that you agree to the conditions set forth in the course syllabus. After you have read the course syllabus, let us know (do not wait) if you do not agree with the course conditions and requirements. PSYK.TREK 3.0 (or 2.0) is designed to be used in addition to reading the textbook NOT as a substitute for doing so! The quizzes and exams are based on the textbook and PSYK.TREK 3.0 (2.0). 9 Emergency Procedures for Classrooms: Call 911 and then Campus Safety in response to an imminent threat to persons or property. In the event of an evacuation (intermittent horns & strobes), gather all personal belongings and leave the building using the nearest available safe exit. Be prepared to be outside for one hour and stay a minimum of 200 feet from any building or structure. So long as it is safe to do so students are expected to stay on campus and return to class after evacuations that last less than 15 minutes. Do not attempt to re-enter the building until instructed by an Evacuation Director (identified by orange vests) or by three horn blasts or bell rings. Please notify the nearest Campus Safety Officer or Evacuation Director of any one left in the building or in need of assistance.
