1 Student Booklet Summer Social Studies Activities 2016 For Rising Students in Kindergarten Fifth Grade Department of Curriculum and Instruction Academic Programs Prince George s County Public Schools
2 To the Student: You have learned so much this year! This packet is a compilation of activities that require critical thinking and problem solving skills! Calendars are included for the summer which focus on weekly themes. Create a journal by stapling sheets of paper together, or use a notebook to show your work. If you find areas of interest that are more challenging, please make a note to share with your teacher in August. Once an activity has been completed, a parent or guardian should write his/her initials in the box. A nonfiction reading log is included for you to keep track! To the Parents/Guardians: Families should preview the suggested activities together. There are some activities that require advanced planning, or you may want to consider working together with other families and friends on some activities. Have a happy and safe summer! 2

Visit your local library and check out a book to read! Register for a library card if you don t have one. Summer Social Studies Activities 2016 Click on the Links to Start Your Journey Tuesday Two for Tuesday Research a President George Washington Write a biography. What kind of leader would you be? Write Your Presidential Biography If I were President Game What do Presidents Do? Research a President Me+My Friend =2 Send a friend a Postcard K-2 Taking Pictures of Community People (Pick 2) 3-5 Use the circular from a newspaper or website to make a shopping list for your weekly groceries. Pick 2 items that are produced in your community. Choose 2 community/ issues or historical events that are important to you. Write a poem about it, using your choice of poetic form. Wednesday 5 W s Wednesday Who?, What?, Why? Where?, When? Current Events Write a letter to the President and say what is going on. Write a News Story Be a Kid Reporter Writing a Friendly Letter Who?, What?, Why? Where?, When? All about Celebrations! Choose a Community Leader and write about it! Plan a Family and Friends Reunion. Ask everyone to bring their favorite item to share put in the time capsule. Items should explain 3 of the 5 W s 3-5 Who: K-5 What: Stories Online Where: Illustrated Stories Click Here! Thursday Try It Thursday Try listening to books about American Communities Solve a Community Problem K-2 Try Reading a Book about your community 3-5 Try it! Plan a Nonfiction Book Talk with your family. Visit the National Archives and read some of our country s most important documents. Make note of your thoughts and what you most enjoyed in your journal. 3

Museum of American History There s a lot to learn at the Zoo. Can you identify the country where each animal came from? Zoo Activities More Activities Local museums have plenty to do. Take a look at Prince George s County History See an exhibit at the Surratt House or Aviation Pioneers Try it! Take a hike through historic College Park Take a Trip Visit the National Children s Museum Have fun learning! College Park Aviation Museum Be an Aviator All About Leaders Week 7 Make a Banner to welcome a leader. Pick two leaders you learned about yesterday and write 2 facts about them. Learn about the President. Check out This day in History Pick a leader: Who is the person? What did the person do? Why is the person a good/bad leader? Where did the person live? When did you learn this? Try Journaling Being a Leader Who did you lead? What did you do? Why did people let you lead? Where did you start? When did you decide you were a good or bad leader? (Be sure to ask a parent for permission.) Bury a few clues about your culture in the yard, Give your friends a map and see if they can figure out what you are all about! OR Write a short play based on a chapter or two of your book (you can also ask about plays at the library). After a little rehearsal time, have your family and friends perform your play. Wednesday 5 W s Wednesday Become a Washington National Mall Junior Ranger! Who is represented in the monuments? What do the monuments represent? Why are the monuments located where they are? Where are they located on the mall? When did you learn this? Thursday Try It Thursday Try a Concert in the Park with your family Where did this style of music come from?
