1 1.1 PROGRAMME SPECIFICATION: BSc (Hons)/FdSc Community Sport Coaching The Community Sport Coaching Football programme shares a number of common characteristics with the Football Coaching and Performance programme, however, the programme is taught through the context of a multi-sport, multi-skills approach. This is achieved by combining the systematic analysis of coaching behaviour and coaching practice within a vocational and applied context that focuses on the relationship between sports coaching and sports development. Students are able to develop their practical coaching competence through studying the theories and concepts that underpin different sports, the coaching process and sports development by pursuing a supported series of coaching placements in local communities. Distinctive Features The programme aims to provide a coherent, academically rigorous and vocationally relevant education within the context of multi-sport and multi-skills coaching. The programme focuses on the relationship between the coaching process and the development of opportunities to take part in sport at a local level. Subsequently the development of coaching competence is informed by the needs of adult performers on the recreational-participation pathway and the needs of young people beginning to explore and engage in sport. The programme is mapped against the National Occupation Standards for Sports Coaching at level 2. There is an expectation that students exiting from this course will be prepared to undertake with confidence a National Governing Body qualification at level 3. Aims of Programme The programme aims to: a) Foster an enquiring and critical analysis of the scientific theories and concepts that underpin and influence sports performance. b) Develop a critical understanding of the theories and concepts that influence the performance of coaches and coaching behaviour. c) Enable students to develop and extend their understanding of the methods and processes of scientific enquiry related to the coaching process. d) Develop confidence in the application of knowledge and skills that enhances the competence of individuals in their capacity as sports coaches capable of delivering coaching sessions without the need for direct supervision. e) Facilitate student competence in the process of becoming active, reflective and independent learners through providing, within a supportive learning environment, student centred teaching and learning methods. f) Enable students to acquire and develop competence in key transferable skills that will enhance their opportunities for further study, life-long learning and continued employment.

2 g) Support the mission statement of UC by meeting the needs of local, regional and national students and those from a wide variety of backgrounds. h) Promote an awareness of the moral and ethical considerations that underpins the pursuit of professional practice and the development of coaching as a professionally regulated vocation. Intended learning outcomes: The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate the achievement of the following: a) Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theories and concepts that underpin the performance of individuals participating in sport both as an individual performer and as part of a team. b) Show a critical knowledge of the methods, theories and concepts that can be used to improve your competence as a community sports coach. c) Demonstrate a critical understanding of the processes and concepts that relate to the delivery, management and administration of the coaching process in a community based context. d) Complete a research project that demonstrates your ability to gather, understand and critically evaluate primary and secondary data within the framework of an appropriate scientific method. e) Work independently and solve problems efficiently using a variety of techniques and solutions. f) Enhance your written and oral communication skills in a variety of contexts. g) Use numerate and ICT skills to assemble, analyse, present and communicate ideas. h) Demonstrate the personal values and professional integrity and responsibility appropriate to an occupation moving towards becoming a professionally regulated vocation. i) Undertake a work-related project with an employer/deployer of coaches (specific to the Foundation Degree). Learning, Teaching and Assessment Methods Learning and teaching is undertaken through a variety of tutor led lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. At Level 5 and 6 increasing emphasis is placed on the students own responsibility for learning. At level 6 the completion of a dissertation signifies the capability of a student to undertake a significant piece of individual work based on an original research question. At level 5 the completion of a work-related project as part of the Coaching Placement module for Foundation Degree students will also inform the attainment of intellectual and practical skills at the level, and in the context, appropriate to the characteristic of the Foundation Degree. Quality indicators The quality procedures adopted in the programme are laid down at an institutional level within the The University Student Handbook. These policies and procedures have been designed to reflect the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Code of Practice on Programme Approval, Monitoring and Review. In particular there is a formal annual monitoring process informed by feedback and evaluation. In addition the following approaches are used to monitor the quality of the Community Sport Coaching programme. Programme Review

3 a) Questionnaires relating to the organisation and management of the programme. b) Student representation at Programme Board meetings. c) Summative evaluation Level six students are asked to reflect on their experiences of the degree programme and their assessment of whether they have attained the stated aims and learning outcomes. Module Review Student questionnaires (or open discussion) issued during the review of the module (week 13). Results and conclusions from these evaluations are collated by the module leader and feedback is given to the next cohort of students via the module booklet. Admission Applicants for the programme are invited to attend a personal interview as an integral part of the admissions process. All applicants should demonstrate a passion and commitment to playing and coaching sport. A reasonable level of sporting ability is expected so that students can successfully attain the aims and learning outcomes of the programme. It is expected that students will have attained a NGB level 1 coaching qualification or equivalent before admission to the programme. Academic Qualifications For entry to the BSc Hons programme Typical entry requirements - individual offers may vary: A levels: UCAS points (excluding General Studies). BTEC: National Diploma - DMM. GCSEs: English Language and Maths at grade C or above. Please see page 164 for general entrance requirements regarding GCSEs. International Baccalaureate: 28 points. QAA-approved Access Diploma: Pass plus GCSEs in English Language and Maths. Approved NVQ Level 3 qualification in a coaching related subject area and subject to interview. Applicants without the above formal qualifications but who have relevant skills and work/life experience will be considered on an individual basis and may be assessed through a written portfolio. For entry to the FdSc programme For those students who wish to pursue a two year programme, or do not meet the threshold entry requirements for entry onto the Honours programme, there is the option of applying for a Foundation Degree in Community Sport Coaching. At the end of the first year students can elect to transfer to the Honours programme subject to satisfactory progress or continue on the Foundation Degree programme. At the end of year 2 students can choose to graduate with a Foundation Degree or again subject to satisfactory progress they can extend their studies to the final year of the Honours degree programme. All applicants will be required to possess a DBS clearance form before they register for Level 5. Flexible Entry Applicants who have held a UKCC endorsed 1 st 4Sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching from a recognised UK National Governing Body for at least TWO years before the date of application

4 can apply for the accreditation of prior certificated learning for up to 30 credits at level 4. To confirm the prior certificated learning applicants will deliver an assessed 30 minute coaching session in their current coaching environment and present their 1 st 4Sport Certificate and Action Plan. Successful applicants will register part-time and not be required to take the modules Coaching Practice 1 and Coaching Practice 2. It should be noted that full-time students who enter with credit will be charged the annual full-time tuition fee unless study is restricted to one semester, in which case 50pc of the full- time annual fee will be charged (as per the current University Tuition Fee Policy ). Award requirements (include interim awards) BSc (Hons) Community Sport Coaching requires 360 credits (120 at level 6, 120 at level 5 and ) along with successful completion of dissertation.
