Date of production University of Surrey Nescot College BA (Hons) Education Studies Education Studies February 2012 Education Aims of the BA Education Studies Programme The programme aims to: Draw on a wide range of intellectual resources, theoretical perspectives and academic disciplines to illuminate understanding of education and the context within which it takes place Provide students with a broad and balanced knowledge and understanding of the principles features of education in a wide range of contexts Encourage students to engage with fundamental questions concerning the aims and values of education and its relationship to society Provide opportunities for students to appreciate the problematic nature of educational theory, policy and practice Encourage the interrogation of educational process in a wide variety of contexts Develop in students the ability to construct and sustain a reasonable argument about educational issues in a clear lucid and coherent manner Promote a range of qualities in students including intellectual independence and critical engagement with evidence. On completion of this programme, students will be able to demonstrate that they have acquired the ability to understand theoretical knowledge and research evidence about: the processes of learning, including some of the key paradigms and their impact on educational practices the effects of cultural, social, political, historical and economic contexts on learning including educational policies, moral, religious and philosophical underpinning of and issues of social justice formal and informal context for learning. Educational contexts will include some understanding of their own educational system and other educational systems, and the values underpinning their organisation a range of research perspectives and methodologies applied to education (Honours only) the complex interactions between education and its contexts, and relationships with other disciplines and professions performance and improvement of their own learning including the development of study skills, information retrieval, a capacity to plan and manage learning and to reflect on their own learning

All learning outcomes associated with all the modules above must be achieved before an award of an Ordinary degree is awarded.
3 Programme Outcomes- the programme provides opportunities for students to achieve and demonstrate the following learning and educational outcomes which have references to the benchmark statement for education studies. Knowledge and understanding On graduating with honours degree in education studies, should demonstrate a critical understanding of: i. The underlying values and principles of relevant education studies and developing personal stance which draws on their knowledge and understanding ii. The diversity of learners and the complexities of the education process iii. The complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts, and the range of ways in which participants (including learners and teachers) can influence the process iv. The societal and organisational structures and purposes of educational systems and the possible implications for learner and the learning process. Application On graduating with an honours degree education studies, should be able to demonstrate the ability. i. Analyse educational concepts theories and issues of policy in a systematic way ii. Identify and reflect on the potential connections and discontinuities between each of the aspects of subject knowledge and their application in educational policies and context iii. Accommodate new principles and understanding iv. Select a range of relevant primary and secondary sources including theoretical and research based evidence to extend their knowledge and understanding (Honours only) v. Use a range of evidence to formulate appropriate and justified ways forward and potential changes in practice. 5 Pathway requirements, levels, modules, credits, awards The programme is a HE3 (FHEQ level 6) modular part-time programme top-up for those who have got Foundation Degree in an education-related discipline such as Foundation Degree in Early Years, Education Support and Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector. The programme is designed to meet the need of individuals planning to develop their careers in both the compulsory and post-compulsory education system in a variety of contexts. The degree allows successful students to progress on to a PGCE in primary or secondary teaching. Those candidates working in the lifelong sector will pursue the programme as part of their professional development and will provide opportunities to reflect on their own practice. All of the modules relate to educational theory and professional practice. They are designed to develop the understanding required to operate effectively in educational environment. The Award: BA Honours Degree in Education Studies requires 360 credits of which 120 must be at HE3 (FHEQ level 6) and the remaining 240 credits from APL at HE1 and HE2. As specified in the University of Surrey Regulations, candidates obtaining a weighted mean of 70% and above will be awarded the Degree first class. Candidates obtaining a weighted mean of 60-69% will be awarded Second Class Hours upper Division. Candidates obtaining a weighted mean of 50-59% will be awarded Second Class Lower Division and Candidates obtaining a weighted mean of 40-49% will be awarded Third Class Honours. Criteria for Admission As specified by the University of Surrey Regulations, applicants will be expected to provide satisfactory evidence of ability to pursue successfully the BA Honours Degree programme. The course is intended for candidates who have completed Foundation Degree (normally with a merit) or its equivalent with minimum credits of 240 credits at HE1 and HE2 of which 120 should be at HE2. Candidates need to be in relevant paid employment at the commencement of the programme. Where a student loses their job through redundancy or is unable to work as a result of approved extenuating circumstances they may be able to continue with their studies. All applicants have a GCSE (A-C) equivalent qualification in English Language and Mathematics. All candidates will be interviewed by a member of the programme team. Where appropriate, additional support needs will be discussed so that suitable adjustments can be explored.
