Ability to move chairs for group work Instructor technology availability Ability to move desks/tables for group work Min Max Mean Variance Standard Deviation Total Responses Additional comments and/or information about this learning space: Get somebody to clean that room regularly! Whoever's job it is should seriously be fired or at least reprimanded! consider outlets for computer charging if you're going to provide this amazing workspace. I've heard my professor say how much she enjoys the space and the easy accessibility to group work if needed. Many of my other professors often complain about how inconvenient it is to have the students not be able to turn around for group activities. I think there needs to be power outlets available. I like the professional feel. It makes young college students feel more significant in the world Good class room I am satisfied. I wish there were outlets close to the desks so I can plug my computer in. Nothing. I don't know why this fucking matters. For years and years the standard classroom arrangement has been desks or tables and chairs. You aren't reinventing the wheel, it's the same fucking classroom that appears all over this campus. Total Responses 9
4. What do you like and dislike about this learning space (furnishings, technology, etc.)? The chairs are very awkward for seating. They do not adjust making it difficult for taller and shorter students to adjust to the solid desk. These being nicer chairs you would hope they could adjust up and down I like how the chairs are kind of ergonomically designed, but the wheels get caught on the wheels of other chairs and the tables. The tables are also constantly filthy; one time somebody spilled coffee on one and didn't clean it up, it stayed there for two weeks. Eventually somebody came by with a wet paper towel but the residue was still there. I really like the tabled and chairs, it's much more comfortable than the desk/chair combos. The white board is very large too, which is great. Like the tables and the very comfortable chairs! The space seems bigger than a normal classroom and I have plenty of space between me and the student next to me. We haven't explored any additional technology in this classroom verses those in other classrooms, so I cannot comment on that. My only dislike is my ability to see the slides when I'm on the very outside. I would also like to see more outlets for computer charging. I like how the chairs and tables are easily movable for the rare chance of group discussions within the classroom. The chairs are very comfortable and easy to move around. chairs are comfortable; presentation equipment is great and works very well; does not feel crowded; lighting is good I like the chairs, and tables. I think they look more modern. I wish there were charging stations at the tables, like in the albertsons building or the lecture halls with desks in the TLC Lots of desk space. rolling chairs and tables. I like the change from desks to tables and chairs. However, we tried to do a class circle and had a hard time moving all of the tables to the sides of the room. I like everything there. Nothing to dislike there to be honest. It is very open and I like the rolling chairs better than an actual desk chair. I feel that it makes the sitting situation much less awkward for those people that are not the smallest of people. The chairs on wheels are nice for group disscussion. The chairs are too tall and tables are too short, so I have too lean over to take notes. This results in back pain. The being able to hang backpacks on the chairs is useless for me because my backback is always full and very heavy. Also, it would stick too far into the aisle behind me and block the way completely. There is a door near the side of the white board which seems to be connected with another class. The noise from next class disturbs the learning environment. the class too big for small number of students taking the class and its too colder than other places or rooms.the furnishing, technology are ok. I don't like how the desk don't have plug ins for you compueters or tablets. I like the tables instead of desks, open chairs, as far as the technology I didn't really notice a huge difference. Chairs too high/ not adjustable The boards seem extremely useful. The chairs allow for comfort and adjust ability It was very cold and uncomfortable. I had to dress like I was outside. I like how spacious it is, I have several classes currently in TLC 147 and both are full, I
find them cramped and confined and am constantly bumping into neighbors as we are squeezed in there like sardines. Yet in this room I am completely comfortable. I like the table, chairs and the space I didn't really have strong feelings either way. I really like that it has actual tables instead of annoying chairs with unnecessarily small writing platforms! More of this please! I really like the desks and the chairs. The chairs are very comfortable and I wish more classrooms had them. The projector is very convenient as well as I am in a film class. I love the new chairs! They are way more comfortable than the old ones. There's no distractions Total Responses 25
5. Can you describe any ways this room has enabled learning that would have been more difficult in other classrooms? It has a lot of desk space which makes it very convenient Not a single one. Any other class room probably would have been better than or equal to this one. It's space. The large room helps us work in groups and also not feel cramped like traditional classrooms in the TLC I am able to spread my notebook, course book and computer out in front of me and have plenty of room between myself and the student next to me. Rooms in which the chairs are comfortable and in which you can easily turn around to work in groups enhance the learning environment very much. this room is free from distractions such as things on the walls, windows, etc. It just seems more open which is nice, and it's easy to see everything, even from the back of the room. Desk space is important. I think that can make it easier. Plus its easier to "get in groups" for smaller discussions. There is more room to write on the tables and it also makes group discussions easier because we can all view the material in one place instead of passing it around like in other classrooms. Using projector and white alternatively is very easy here compared to some other class room. It gives the opportunity for people in small groups to work more closely together compared to being in the small room I was in for English originally. No. This room allows students to have the space that is need to do group work in class and concentrate. In other rooms with the crowded desks, it's made it hard to learn when you get distracted from your neighbor. This space has allowed for more personal space and it's easier to concentrate during lecture. The room isn't too large to where it's hard to see and hear the professor. the tables allow work to be shown and or have more ease to interact. I like the wheels on the chairs. The ease of following the teacher in the chairs and working on group projects. The room is highly adjustable in ways that would be destructive in a normal classroom. None. In an uncomfortable environment you are constantly watching the clock just waiting for class to get over. In this room you're comfortable and can devote more attention to what is being taught. The space it has, not too crowded even with a full class. It's a bunch of tables and chairs, what do you expect? There was no discernible difference in learning. Being at a table makes group discussions and other group-interaction based assignments way easier and more effective. Not really It is easier to pay attention when I am more comfortable, and when I don't have to listen to people scooting across the floor. No.
Total Responses What one aspect of this learning space would you never want to see changed? The long tables >Implying it shouldn't be changed The size of the room and the tables and chairs. I am an obese student and the tables and chairs are very important for my learning experience The table/chairs idea is FANTASTIC. Far better for learning than the traditional individual desks. The room available on the desktop is great and the chairs are comfortable, as well. I'm not sure there is an aspect that I would never want to see changed. I guess I would always want to see comfortable chairs and not hard ones that can't easily be relocated. the chairs and tables Lots of deskspace The rolling chairs are by far the best! The sitting arrangement. The placement of the overhead combined with the large desks and rolling chairs. Nothing. The amount of space the rooms have within them. The desks and chairs and the way the room is arranged. the size of the room. N/A Having tables gave more space to work. The spaciousness. Also it is well lit. Tables and chairs and how they are arranged I don't care. Tables. Never go back to the individual chairs please. The chairs I like that the lighting isn't too bright it is easier on the eyes when viewing a powerpoint. Drop down presentation screen. Total Responses 23
7. Do you feel the university should invest in making other classrooms more like this one? Why or why not? Yes. No. These classrooms are designed to hold less than 40 students and some courses are designed to less than 40 students as well. Often times these smaller classes require its students to work together in groups so naturally the mobility of space works well to the environment. Yes. It's not fair that the typical classrooms don't offer accessibility to students of all sizes. This is the only class I feel comfortable in. I feel it facilitates a stronger academic environment. I think that the university should definitely consider making more classrooms like this one. It allows easy access to group work and makes the students feel more comfortable in a school setting. I feel that this classroom has a great arrangement and atmosphere for group discussion and there is little to distract from lecturing. It is also very easy for each student to benefit from instructional technology in this classroom due to its smaller size and good lighting and equipment. I think so. It's a lot easier for me to learn in places where there is room, rather than a bunch of desks where there is hardly any room and difficult to move, especially for discussions. not really. I love the deskspace, but that is the only real aspect that I want thats different from other class rooms in the TLC. Yes, I like the environment better than some of the older classes I have been jn Yes. because this room is pretty good. Yes it creates a more group friendly environment that promotes more classmate interaction when it is wanted and needed. Definitely, rooms like these make learning easier for both the instructor and the students. The rooms allow enough space to learn and to concentrate during lecture, instead of being put in a small cramped room. Yes, I think this classroom is the best one I have and it's made class easier and it increases the participation. It's definitely more comfortable than the desks and I have more space to concentrate. Not if the cost is passed on to us. Why not use the students and colleges to make new, but unique furniture and accessories? I would totally be impressed by a University that uses it's internal resources and allows student artists, engineers, architects, etc. to create for future students, even if it's just the blue prints. The University could even make it a course that could take advantage of the new interdisciplinary building. There could be themed classrooms! Yes. I think it creates a wonderful environment. Doesn't really matter what the room is looks like. I think all university classrooms should have heat. Yes, as I previously stated, many rooms in the TLC are overcrowded and not very spacious. This leads me to believe that the learning and attention paid in these classrooms is far less than the learning that goes on and the attention being paid in this new classroom. I fell like I'm getting what I'm paying for in that classroom. No. Put money where it matters: instructor salaries, decreasing student fees and tuition, etc. etc. etc.
Yes! I don't know if other people feel this way but I really do not like sitting at the chairs with the flip-down writing space, I feel like it isolates everybody into their own little spaces, and also the chairs in other classrooms are awkward and uncomfortable. I feel this classroom is very well set up; it is close to encourage conversation, and comfortable yet not so much so that students are able to doze off or talk during the class. Yes, the old chairs are so uncomfortable, it is hard to sit still and really learn while in class. Yes! More movement in the furniture! Total Responses 23
8. How has instructional technology affected your learning? Teacher doesn't know how to use any technology so this doesn't seem applicable I don't know what is meant by that specifically. It's helped us "stay on the same page" because we can access visuals more readily I am unable to answer that question because I don't see where the technology in this room is any different that any other room. The instructional technology helps the students see what is on the board and see what the instructor sees on their computer screen. instructional technology has enhanced my learning by making it easy for the instructor to use a variety of media and to switch back and forth between media quickly. I'm not really effected by that, but it is nice that I can see everything from any area in the room. Its given me more responsibility. It makes it easier for the instructor to show us examples not kny on the Internet, but also a physical object under the doc cam. Affected in a good way. We spend a lot of time using the screen so it makes it easier having it easily accessible. It hasn't. A lot, makes it easier to learn. Instructional technology has affected my learning in many ways and I find it easier to follow along with PowerPoints on the board as well as my computer. I can take notes more efficiently, which can increase my participation in class because I'm not wasting my time writing down the concepts. It is faster, but doesn't let the usefulness and importance of books show. I also think that teachers are relying more on technology than learning to be better teachers and to interact more with us. N/A I learned. I haven't noticed anything different about the technology that differs from any other TLC classroom. I am a "hands on" learner Outside of having a projector in the class, WHICH EVERY OTHER CLASSROOM IN THE TLC ALSO HAS, it has not changed my learning in any noticeable way. Being able to view films in class has helped us understand the subject matter more and saved us time outside the classroom. I haven't noticed a difference. Total Responses 22
