Course Description: The purpose of this survey course is to direct the student toward a professional level of ethical awareness and social responsibility. Modern day ethics are explored in a variety of settings including government, technology, and globalization. This course contributes to satisfying the Gordon Rule (State Rule 6A ) writing requirement. (Corequisite: ENC 1101.) This course also helps develop the general education skills of (1) critical/creative thinking; (2) communication; (3) cultural literacy; and (4) information and technical literacy. Minimum Technical Requirements Students enrolled in this course must be able to: Use all required features of the Falcon Online Classroom such as Discussions, Quizzes, and the Assignments folder; Use the Connect Access Code to enter and complete activities in the McGraw-Hill publisher s website; and Create and submit files using Microsoft Word. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to 1. Recognize modern value systems and their relation to ethics. 2. Develop thinking and analytical skills within an ethical framework. 3. Research and critique current ethical issues. 4. Apply ethical reasoning to various scenarios and defend conclusions. 2 Class Format: Taking a course via distance learning is somewhat different from your typical classroom experience. Our online classroom provides you with the various tools by which to meet the learning outcomes. Within our Falcon Online Classroom you will find: -group discussions, case studies, chapter quizzes and a research paper. Supplemental content, such as powerpoints, will also be available. Within the McGraw-Hill Publisher s Website (use Connect Access Code through the Falcon Online Classroom) you will find: - e-text chapter reading - chapter activities (called Learnsmart Participation Activities) **Directions on how to use the Connect Access Code are in the Content section of the Falcon Online Classroom. 3 Equipment and Supplies: Access to a computer with a reliable internet connection is needed. In addition, MSWord will be needed to complete some assignments. If you experience any computer problems, do not let this interfere with your work. The college has open computer labs on every campus and these are open day and evening. Some are even open on the weekends. Classroom Policies Disclaimer: Teaching policies and regulations for this course are not open for discussion or negotiation. This syllabus has been constructed to be as complete as possible but is by no means a binding document. I reserve the right to alter policies, procedures and the syllabus as needed. Please utilize the Falcon Online classroom regularly as any changes to the syllabus will be posted there. In the event this happens, I will notify the class either through the course Announcements section located on the course homepage or through class . You are expected to monitor the Announcements section and your on a regular basis. How to proceed through the course: Students should plan to have three hours of study time per week for each credit hour of class time. Example: when taking a typical 3 credit hour course, students should plan to spend at least 9 hours per week doing coursework and studying for that course regardless of the mode of delivery (online, hybrid, face-to-face). 1. Syllabus: Read the syllabus thoroughly and feel comfortable that you understand it, especially when it comes to grading criteria and schedule dates. An electronic version of the syllabus is located in the Content section of the Falcon Online classroom. 2. Calendar: Manage your time wisely. There are many chapters to cover, and this class will move quickly. Click on Calendar to manage all of your key dates for all of your classes. You also can add personal dates as well. There is also a Class Schedule at the end of this syllabus to guide you through the course. Get ahead in the course if you can by one week. We never know what life is going to toss our way, and you will be glad you have that cushion of time if you need it. 3. Content: When you click on Content you will see the syllabus and supplemental material provided by the publisher and the instructor. This material is there to help you with your learning and answer your questions regarding the course. In addition, this is where you will find the link to the publisher s website and directions on how to use the Connect Access code. It is important that you read each LearnSmart chapter of your digital text paying closer attention to the text highlighted in yellow. Once you have completed reading the chapter, click on the practice tab to see what you retained. As you are being asked questions, if you are unsure of an answer you can click on read about it in the text to get a further understanding. As you correctly answer the practice questions for each chapter (Learnsmart Participation Activities), you will be earning participation points. Page 3 of 12

4 4. Discussions: When you click on the Discussions tab you will see that there are two Graded Discussion Topics. See grading criteria for discussions located in this syllabus. 5. Quizzes: Chapter quizzes are created for each chapter and you will find them located in the Falcon Online classroom under the Quizzes tab. 6. LearnSmart Participation Activities: Answering the questions in these activities, located in the McGraw-Hill publisher s website, will not only earn you points for participation but also prepare you for the chapter quizzes. 7. Assignments: Upload your Research Paper and Cases here. See grading criteria for the research paper and cases located in this syllabus. 8. Grades: Assignments are typically graded within 72 hours of the due date. You can click on grades to monitor your progress. 9. Classlist/Communication: You can contact me with any questions that you have regarding the course via my office phone (during scheduled office hours) or . To send me an , simply click on Classlist, click on my name, and then proceed from there. 10. Help/Resources: This is where you can find other supplemental resources such as the DSC Library, research guides, FAQs and computer systems check. Handling of assignments: A detailed class schedule of assignments and due dates is provided at the end of the syllabus. Communication: Bring concerns & questions to the instructor in a timely manner. Do not wait until the end of the semester to let the instructor know you are struggling in the course. Attendance and Lateness Policy: In either an online or traditional class your attendance is expected. Late Work/Make-up Work: Allowing late work or make-up work is strictly at the discretion of the instructor. The instructor reviews all late or makeup work on a case by case basis. Should any late work or make-up work be allowed, it will incur a 20% penalty from the maximum points available to earn for that assignment IN ADDITION TO any other points that would otherwise have been deducted based on the grading criteria. Classroom Etiquette: In an online class, when posting to a discussion board be courteous and considerate. Online communication lacks the nonverbal cues that fill in much of the meaning in face-toface communication. Make every effort to be clear with correct grammar and spelling, and avoid emoticons or use of all caps. Evaluation/Assessment Methods: Evaluation of learning is based on the following assignments and overall points accumulated. Page 4 of 12

CLASS SCHEDULE See end of the syllabus Class Withdrawal Process: Students can withdraw from this class prior to the date listed in the Academic Calendar. It is not necessary to have approval from the instructor to withdraw from the course, but many times issues and concerns can be resolved with communication. Please review Refund/Repayment Policy in the current college catalog and also check with the Office of Financial Aid to determine how this withdrawal might affect your current and future aid eligibility. Attendance includes participating in online or face-to face environments as required. GROUP DISCUSSION TOPICS AND GRADING CRITERIA : THE GRADED DISCUSSION FORUM contains two topics. There will be a beginning date and ending date for each topic. For each topic, you are required to read the postings of the other students, do an initial post, and reply to two other students. Late submissions will not be awarded points. General Pointers for Discussions: The quality of your discussion contribution is important, and one or two sentences written in an initial post or reply post are not sufficient. It is required that you use your text, other books, and Internet research to supplement your posts. Make sure you read other learners posts before posting on a topic. Try to add some value to the comments already posted. DO NOT POST SOMETHING THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN POSTED BY ANOTHER LEARNER. Discussion Grade Rubric (Grade Criteria): Your graded group discussions will consist of two parts. In Part One, you will present ONE ORIGINAL POST presenting research on the topic. This post will include citations for all research. Citations should include live links to information gathered from online sources. Your original post will be graded for accuracy, thoroughness, professionalism, and timeliness. Your original post can earn up to 50 points. Initial posts earning points will be professional, well-researched, and properly cited. They will contain at least THREE CITED SOURCES of information. The post should summarize and integrate the three sources of information (CLEARLY EXPLAIN WHAT INFORMATION IS BEING USED FROM EACH SOURCE), and the citations should be live links (if online sources are used.) Posts earning between points will be professional, well-researched, and properly cited. They will contain at least TWO SOURCES of information. The post should summarize and integrate the two sources of information and the citations should be live links (if online sources are used.) Posts earning below 30 will have only one source of information and may fail to meet other requirements. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA AS A SOURCE FOR THIS DISCUSSION. In Part Two, you will reply to TWO other students posts. Your replies should show reflection on the initial posts and provide further research on the topic. Your replies should include live links to information gathered from online sources. Replies will be graded for staying on topic, adding new information, professionalism, and timeliness. Your two replies can earn up to 50 points (25 points each). Posts earning 25 points will be professional, stay on topic, provide reflection/opinion, and contain at least ONE SOURCE of information, complete with citation. Replies earning below 25 points will not meet the above criteria. There is no makeup work for this assignment. Page 6 of 12

7 CASES AND GRADING CRITERIA There will be 2 assigned cases. See Instructions for Cases under Content in the Falcon Online classroom. You should complete the cases after reading the corresponding chapter and working through the course learning tools for that chapter. The cases must be answered thoroughly and professionally. Cases should be prepared in Microsoft Word and uploaded to the appropriate assignments folder on or before their due date. The answers must be numbered and the text of each question must be included. Each case is worth 100 points points: Each case question is answered accurately, thoroughly, and professionally. Professionalism in writing includes proper spelling, grammar and presentation. Outside research will be presented- AND - Reference to textbook concepts will be presented. You will provide proper citations for all research points: Each case question is answered accurately, thoroughly, and professionally. Professionalism in writing includes proper spelling, grammar and presentation. May be missing one of the two: outside research or reference to textbook concepts AND/OR sources are listed but it is not clear how information from the sources was used AND/OR to which answers the sources apply points: In addition to the possible omissions in the points range, your answers may not be thorough. This is A Gordon Rule writing course. Below 70 points: One or more case questions is not answered or is answered incorrectly, AND/OR the case is not presented professionally AND/OR the answers lack both outside research and reference to textbook concepts. You can not score a 70 or above if you are lacking BOTH outside research and reference to textbook concepts. Your answers can NOT all be based on opinion or uncited material. Note: Turnitin.com is used to determine case originality. Case submissions with an Originality Report higher than 60% may NOT earn more than one-half credit. Submissions with 80% or higher will earn NO points. It is up to the instructor whether cases may be re-submitted. RESEARCH PAPER AND GRADING CRITERIA Students will choose their own topic and prepare a research paper involving an ethical issue. An ethical issue is a problem or situation that requires a person or organization to choose between alternatives that must be evaluated as right (ethical) or wrong (unethical). See Instructions for Research Papers under content in the Falcon Online classroom. Page 7 of 12

8 The paper will be double spaced, 12 font, using New Times Roman. The paper should have a minimum of 1,200 words and should not exceed 1,500 words. The paper should be supported by a minimum of three (3) work cited sources. It should be completed in.doc, docx or.rtf format and submitted to the assignments folder by the due date. The paper format is as follows: (**LABEL EACH SEPARATE SECTION**) Title Page (1 page) Subject topic, your name, course, professor and date. Introduction (1 page) Overall theme of the topic, backround and why it is important to discuss. Body (3 pages) Expand on the topic. What are the facts, differing views, or concerns. Conclusion (1 page) What do you think is the right thing to do and why. Works Cited (1 page) using APA format **Apply an ethical decision making strategy from the textbook to your analysis.** If you are not familiar with APA format, you can find information on: or see a sample APA paper at: There are so many ethical issues that you shouldn t have trouble in finding one that interests you to research and write about. If you are struggling to find a topic you might wish to go through the table of contents or index of our textbook early in the course and identify a general topic that interests you. The grading of papers is subjective, and there is a range of possible points to be earned. In addition to the rubric or criteria stated below, your grade reflects your instructor s perception of your writing style, the quality of the articles or literature evaluated, and how well you presented the topic and your conclusion points: Research papers that earn points will be clearly and professionally presented as well as free of typographical and other errors. The quality of the articles or literature evaluated and their sources will be sound. The paper will follow the prescribed format and each part will be complete. The paper will be uploaded to the dropbox on or before the due date. Papers that earn less than 80 points will not meet one or more of the above criteria. They may or may not have been uploaded to the dropbox on or before the due date. Note: Turnitin.com is used to determine paper originality. 9 CHAPTER QUIZZES Each chapter will have a short multiple choice quiz. There are 12 quizzes worth a total of 400 points. You have two attempts on each quiz and 30 minutes for each attempt. LEARNSMART PARTICIPATION ACTIVITIES It is important that you read each chapter of your digital text paying closer attention to the areas highlighted in yellow. Use your Connect Access Code to enter the McGraw-Hill publisher s website (directions on how to use the Connect Access Code are in the Content section of the Falcon Online Classroom). Once you have completed reading the chapter, click on the practice tab to see what you retained. Performing these Learnsmart Participation Activities will help you on the quizzes. The typical student will spend approximately 30 minutes per chapter answering questions for a cumulative total of 100 points. However, you may take as long as you would like to complete these activities and enter, close and re-enter. The publisher maintains support at for technical assistance. There are no make-ups for these points. Student Rights & Responsibilities Students are responsible for reading and following all college policies outlined in the Student Handbook. Academic Integrity In order to preserve academic excellence and integrity, the College expects you to know, understand, and comply with the Academic Integrity Policy, which prohibits academic dishonesty in any form, including, but not limited to, cheating and plagiarism. Grades conferred by instructors are intended to be, and must be, accurate and true reflections of the coursework actually produced and submitted by you. Honor Pledge: I, as a member of the DSC community, pledge that I will neither give nor receive unauthorized aid in my work nor will I present another s work as my own, nor will I tolerate anyone who does. The student will receive a grade of 0 on the assignment with no opportunity to resubmit the assignment for a different grade. If a student has previously taken this course with the current instructor or a different instructor, permission must be obtained from the current instructor to re-use previously submitted assignments. If permission is not obtained prior to the submission of the re-used assignment, the student may be determined to have self-plagiarized. This finding may result in a report to Judicial Page 9 of 12

10 Affairs and the receipt of a grade of 0 on the assignment with no opportunity to resubmit the assignment for a higher grade.
