1 BUS 4601, Recruitment and Staffing Course Syllabus Course Description Prepares all current and future managers with the necessary tools needed to identify, attract, select, and retain talent. It provides a study with regard to external influences, support activities, staffing specific activities, and the staffing system management process. Real-world examples will be utilized with special emphasize on staffing models, the labor market and unions, employment law, job analysis and planning, recruitment tools, and strategic staffing decision-making. Course Textbook Phillips, J. M., & Gully, S. M. (2015). Strategic staffing (3rd ed.). Hoboken, NJ: Pearson. Course Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Explain the importance of all components of staffing (recruitment, selection, employment). 2. Categorize types of work and job design. 3. Explain the significance of research methods used in job analysis. 4. Explain compensation and other work rewards used to attract, retain, and motivate applicants. 5. Analyze legal issues associated with staffing organizations, to include legal requirements of staffing management systems. 6. Discuss career paths, to include the type of mobility that can occur in career advancement. 7. Explain how internal selection decisions differ from external selection decisions, to include selection methods. 8. Summarize the advantages and disadvantages to performance appraisal methods. 9. Evaluate the impact of voluntary turnover on organizations. Academic Integrity Honesty and integrity are taken very seriously at Waldorf University. All students should be familiar with the Waldorf University Academic Integrity Policy (found in the current Student Handbook) and the consequences that will result from breaches of this policy. Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit. Course Structure 1. Unit Learning Outcomes: Each unit contains Learning Outcomes that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit. 2. Unit Lessons: Each unit contains a Unit Lesson, which discusses unit material. 3. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook. Suggested Readings are listed in the unit study guides to aid students in their course of study. The readings themselves may or may not be provided in the course, but students are encouraged to read the resources listed if the opportunity arises as they have valuable information that expands upon the lesson material. Students will not be tested on their knowledge of the Suggested Readings. Chapter presentations are provided in each unit study guide as Suggested Readings to aid students in their course of study. BUS 4601, Recruitment and Staffing 1

2 4. Discussion Boards: Discussion Boards are a part of all Waldorf courses. Information and specifications regarding these assignments are provided in the Course Policies listed in the Course Menu bar. 5. Learning Activities (Non-Graded): These non-graded Learning Activities are provided in Units I, II, IV, VI, VII, and VIII to aid students in their course of study. 6. Unit Assessments: This course contains seven Unit Assessments, one to be completed at the end of Units I-VII. Assessments are composed of multiple-choice, matching, and/or written response questions. 7. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in Units II, III, V, and VII. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below. Grading rubrics are included with each assignment. Specific information about accessing these rubrics is provided below. 8. Final Exam: Students are to complete a Final Exam in Unit VIII. All Final Exams are proctored see below for additional information. You are permitted four (4) hours to complete this exam in the presence of your approved proctor. This is an open-book exam. Only course textbooks and a calculator, if necessary, are allowed when taking proctored exams. The Final Exam is composed of multiple-choice, matching, and written-response questions. 9. Ask the Professor: This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content related questions. 10. Student Break Room: This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates. Unit Assignments Unit II Case Study For this assignment, you will read the case study located on page 80 of your course textbook. Respond to each of the three questions after the case with a minimum of 250 words (minimum of 750 words total for all three questions). When responding to the questions, be sure to utilize the information from the required reading and Unit II Study Guide. All sources cited, including the textbook, must be cited and referenced according to APA standards. Utilize APA formatting for your title and reference pages. Information about accessing the Blackboard Grading Rubric for this assignment is provided below. Unit III Web Assignment Using the Web browser of your choice, identify two poorly written and two well-written job descriptions. Please copy and paste the descriptions into your Word document and include references in APA format. What makes the poorly written job descriptions weak? What makes the better job descriptions more effective? Respond to each question with a minimum of 250 words. Now, select one of the weaker job descriptions and rewrite them by utilizing O*NET ( as one of your sources. When responding to the questions, be sure to utilize the information from the required reading and the Unit III Study Guide. All sources cited, including the textbook, must be cited and referenced according to APA standards. Utilize APA formatting for your title and reference pages. 3 Unit V Project For this assignment, please complete the steps below: 1. Select two of the following job positions to research. 2. Explain the basic/general requirements for each position. 3. Identify and discuss at least two different recruiting sources you will use to fill each position. 4. Based on the method(s) selected, create a job posting for each position. (NOTE: Do not simply Google and copy a job posting from a job search engine. The job posting should be your original work.) Job positions: Childcare director Chef Chief financial officer Project manager Fire chief Human resource director Program analyst Police chief Chemist Salesperson Include both positions in one Word document (with both positions marked clearly). Each position must be at least one page in length. All sources used must be cited and referenced according to APA standards. Unit VII Case Study For this assignment, complete the case study titled, Succession Management at General Electric located on page 301 in Chapter 10 of your textbook. Read the case study and answer the three questions that follow. Explain your responses using what you learned through this unit. Answer all three questions in one Word document. Your entire case study should be a minimum of two pages in length and use APA style. Information about accessing the Blackboard Grading Rubric for this assignment is provided below. Submitting Course Papers/Projects Once you have completed your papers/projects, submit your completed papers/projects by uploading through the Assignment tab in each unit. Do not your paper directly to your professor. By using the Assignment tab, your record will automatically be updated to indicate you have submitted your papers/projects and the assignment will be provided to your professor for grading. Instructions for submitting your assignment can be found under the Assignment tab in each unit. Final Exam Guidelines Proctored Final Exams are taken online. Final Exams are to be administered to students by an approved proctor on a date that is mutually convenient. The student is responsible for selecting a qualified proctor that must be approved by the College. To view a list of acceptable proctor qualifications, see the Proctor Agreement form. 4 To request your proctored final exam and/or review the complete Examination Proctor Policy and Proctor Agreement, submit the Request, go to the Request to take Final Exam Online (Online Exam) form. The Request to take Final Exam Online (Online Exam) form is located in the Online Forms, Courses page of the mywaldorf Student Portal. APA Guidelines Waldorf University requires that students use the APA style for papers and projects. Therefore, the APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and listing of sources are to be followed. Information about using APA style can be found in APA Style Help in the Course Menu. This area provides links to internet sites, tutorials, and guides that provide comprehensive information on APA formatting, including examples and sample papers. Grading Rubrics This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Each rubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each level of achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts to meet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics because these are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities. Rubric categories include: (1) Discussion Board, (2) Assessment (Written Response), and (3) Assignment. However, it is possible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not have Assessments). The Discussion Board rubric can be found within Unit I s Discussion Board submission instructions. The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each Unit Assessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment. Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubrics are built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once the Assignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to be submitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting the Grades link. Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to your Discussion Boards, Assessments, and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades. Communication Forums These are non-graded discussion forums that allow you to communicate with your professor and other students. Participation in these discussion forums is encouraged, but not required. You can access these forums with the buttons in the Course Menu. Instructions for subscribing/unsubscribing to these forums are provided below. Click here for instructions on how to subscribe/unsubscribe and post to the Communication Forums. Ask the Professor This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content questions. Questions may focus on Blackboard locations of online course components, textbook or course content elaboration, additional guidance on assessment requirements, or general advice from other students. Questions that are specific in nature, such as inquiries regarding assessment/assignment grades or personal accommodation requests, are NOT to be posted on this forum.
